SGOTM 10 - One Short Straw

Gandhi did have some hidden modifiers with Mao, since we had the worse diplo even in 1660 AD, right? Maybe those changed, as well... @RRRas, can you check some autosaves for when the war mode happened and when the diplo changed?

I think we should place an LB in Gandhi's territory right away, as mdy suggested. That forested hill should see both cities.

I've never warred with Gandhi, except stomping on him early in HOF games. What can we expect? He doesn't have GP yet. Do we take a guess at his attack point and build walls/castle in St. Pete? Would he suicide a stack?

Lack of luck, first autosave is from 1680 ad... I can post it if you want but I am afraid we can't learn a lot from this.

Gandhi is THE chicken... lowest unit building proba and crap attack courage. Biggest worry is that we can't whip so we need sentries. We could make him switch out of war mode by building lot of units but with the variant rules, those would be useless afterward, so I thnk it's best to just defend.

Building units won't take him out of war mode. Gandhi will take forever to prepare for war so other than building some border defense, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Building units won't take him out of war mode.

Yes it would :mischief: It doesn't matter I agree as I would do exactly what you said, but it would (unless the behavior isn't the same for all AIs?).

I thought DanF's analysis showed that an AI with hands full only looks to its own military prep when making the ultimate decision to declare war?

the threshold isn't related to our power? Dynamicaly I mean? Maybe you are right... but in any case, I think few scouts and a bit more of defending units should be enough in case we are actually attacked :)

I thought it was dependent on power rating, as well, but I'm not sure. The point's a bit moot, since I don't see how we can "dynamically" get ahead of the 1.5 threshold, given our production capacity, and assuming he's building units, too. I think a sentry in his territory + some border defence ahead of time sounds good.

What's our tech plan? Chem, then SM >> Comm >> Bio, with Astro as filler, bulbing this path as GS's come? We're roughly on the pace of my first ever test game (I had 8 cities total and a pleased Mansa Musa to trade with, though), and I got to nukes circa 1850 then, which seems to be the approximate pace of the teams that are that far into it. I think I'm generally for pushing ahead with tech and further expansion and hoping that the attacks from barbs/Gandhi won't be too difficult to handle. What do you guys think?

PS: RRRas, :bday:

Tx Babybluepants ;)

I agree with tech path, with maybe physics before bio to use the free GS in a bulb. Hopefully we'll be able to trade PP by the time we have chemistry...

I agree about Gandhi too... let's build a couple of units so we don't get caught by surprise, make roads, and put sentries in place.

When we have basic infra up and the REX is done we will improve our tech rate building wealth in our workshop cities. But I don't think we will be competitive unfortunately (let's blame the barbs ;))

Tx again mate :)

If Gandhi is planning to attack us building more units will delay but not prevent a war. Rather than indefinatly building more units it may be more efficient to declare war on Gandhi ourselves and then pillage him into the stone age?

I agree with the tech path.

We need units to pillage him anyways.

Do we want to skip astro? I'd prefer to go chem--astro--SM, as I doubt the AI will have astronomy in time for when we go physics. Plus, it'll open up galleons and we can go populate some islands and give us better units against barb galleys.

Settler will go settle sheep/copper.

Moscow: Finish Oxford -- two elephants (do we want stables or is it a waste?).
Try to push out a GP before Yaro takes over, although it's probably not possible.

St. P: Give clam&crab to Yaro and build CH -- LB

Yek: CH -- xbow (or maybe worker)

Yaro: NE -- monastery (it's our "science" city with so many scientists)

Nov: CH -- phant just to be safe.

Thoughts? Chem will be ~7 turns with Oxford done, probably about the same for astro. I can play through those two techs (~15ish turns).

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7190899#post7190899 Holds the answer. Definitely worth a read when you have a chance. Although as you said, it doesn't change the situation here since we DO need to build a defensive army (thinking 5-6 units for now). Do we still have our explorer? If so, I'll camp him out near Gandhi's "sod" to see what he's up to.

I don't think we need to skip astro. Gives us the discount. SM beats it for a bulb, though, so we might end up getting both in quick succesion. How do bulb beakers get applied? Is there a 20% discount for having astro first?

EDIT: Also, we can't tech SM until we have PP, so Astro while waiting for a trade to open up will have to happen.

The 20% discount does not apply to bulbs. Galleons don't do much better than triemes against galleys so the only reason to get it is for the discount and observatories. My gut instinct is that an early state property will be more useful than early observatories as we are running a workshop/specialist economy.

I'll be playing later Sunday. I think astro for galleons to colonize will help before going communism. There are some good islands out there that we can workshop.

So..... Gandhi's bringing it. I'm really close to throwing in the towel...

Now if it weren't for the stupid war, we'd actually be in pretty good shape with 3 GS in waiting for bulbs.

Basically St. P is under siege now and we're trying to hold on. I probably should have stopped earlier to contemplate a switch to slavery but that would destroy our econonmy...

Some of our cities are unhappy because I was trying to rush defenders over.

He also took the sugar island.

Don't look good... Do you think his trebs will mow us down in St. Pete next turn? I'll have to look at it more carefully tonight.

I think throwing in the towel is becoming a reasonable option.

We might just be able to salvage this situation but we will need to revolt to slavery immediatly and start mass whipping units in all our northern cities. A castle/temple are useless too us at this point. Muskets in St Pete/Moscow and elephants elsewhere. We might try sacrificing a fee workers to draw some of his forces away and buy a little time. I think we should also revolt to theocracy, this will all hurt our economy but the extra XP could be crucial.

Will have a look after work... when does sgotm11 start already? :)
(that's bad humor, not giving up yet ;))
