SGOTM 10 - One Short Straw

I just remembered from my initial tests a while ago that the AI tends to sit on the second settler for some reason. Maybe they like a capital holy city? Anyway, even if that's the case, he'll probably escort with a LB, so we can't really intercept with only one unit.

He escorts the settler with both LB's, which accounts for the slight delay. Might also mean that he's still gonna settle in our direction.

i've looked at early score of other teams a bit [spent 15 minutes scratching my stupid head]:

Seems like there is quite few who have aproximately 2pop on turn 5-6 and i saw no point drops in that time frame [i was thinking they were running slavery and whipped workboat in second city and worker in capitol].
Maybe they are trying to block Ghandi, which would suggest some extra resources between him and russian land.... Or maybe i am very wrong...

It's hard to read anything out of the graph. I see only MW, GK & US with scores like that. We already thought MW was whipping. Maybe the other two are, as well. Since GK & US haven't played any further, it's impossible to say what they're up to.

The third city date is pretty consistent. He goes for Sistine immediately and runs Caste, so we can forget about culture warring. The super early Lib date in TEST 2 is odd - his GP's in that one are just weird. Maybe we can ignore it.

We'll have a hard time trying to out-expand him. I think we'll most likely have to choke. We might as well steal his workers right away, in that case. I would love to intercept the second settler, but it's not really doable with one LB.

I agree that we will need to choke him. If we are at war with him he is unlikely to build Sistine's Chapel, so culture wars shouldn't be a problem. We should probably chop another couple of longbows after the worker to help with this.

Actually, Gandhi may still rush Sistine even at war. He's that much of a peacemonger...

So are we thinking of choking him with LB's right now? So basically route the south one to the hill, then beeline towards the capital assuming no free worker to steal? Does that mean St. P goes as initially planned on the coastal ivory tile? I'd prefer to stick with the original plan at this point, as moving St. Pete wastes the worker chops we put into that forest. I think we can discourage Gandhi from sending a settler out by declaring on him if necessary.

Explorer will continue hugging the coast line. Should we recall the northern LB? If we're choking, it's probably better to recall him, although I'd much prefer to finish scouting at least one more tile north to check for seafood.

edit: If everyone agrees, I can move the southern LB 1 south to look for Gandhi stragglers and the explorer 2 south. We can figure out what to do with St. Pete after that.

I think we should definitely test out choking first. I, for one, have no idea how he would react. Or, exactly how much effort it will take to keep him down early on.

You should play halfway through the turn. The southern LB was going in that direction anyway. I don't think we should change city location at this point. Knowing a bit more about Gandhi's positioning would allow for more accurate testing.

Choking Gandhi definitely has a chance. He doesn't build many units (in fact he has the lowest unit build prob of any leader if my memory serves me correctly) so you can easily choke him with just a few longbows - at least that's what I think. Gut instinct, so I might not be correct.

Gandhi's always such a pushover in wars that I can't see us running into trouble with him.

From what we can see currently, I would settle on the ivory and start chocking him. Make peace once he is blocked (note: AI will bypass our borders if he has a naval path outside of our cultural borders)

Cheers

Sure. It's just that we were planning to build libraries before any units. Even with that we weren't teching too well early. I'd like to make sure we're not gonna slow down our Lib race too much with an early unit spam. I think 1625 is the latest we wanna get Lib, but ideally a bit sooner...

I might have to disappear for a week or so. I have a piece to build for an exhibition in ten days. After that I should be fine for the duration.

It sounds like everyone's more or less on the same page. You guys can just go ahead whenever ready, as far as I'm concerned.

if one longbow wants to hug for chance to steal worker we definetely need recall northern longbow. I don't think we will prioritize whatever seafood is in north as grabbing south land

If we do this we will still need to send a longbow up there later to stop barb spawn. A choke will still delay liberalism a little, but I think we can still get it well before 1625.

I think we can worker steal Gandhi with a single LB. He's not very aggresive so it should be relatively safe.

I'll move the LB and southern LB and settle St. P as discussed. Worker will complete the chop for a worker from Moscow.

I am inclined to move the northern along the coast one more tile before we decide to fogbust or recall the LB.

^^ I agree, I think a one turn delay for the northest LB won't put our civ at risk.
Go ahead! :goodjob:

they will if they haven't metals (though I guess you were asking for the first two, so go check yeah )

St. P can build a library in a reasonable amount of time, and can then run 2 scientists to overtake Moscow. We can always fire the engineer in Moscow to allow the GS to come first. Since we're in pacifism, 150/12 = 13 turns for the GS from completion of the library. Of course we may have to sink a chop or two into St. P to speed up the library... If we get a GE later from GP pollution in Moscow, we can use it later for a wonder or for ironworks. Or a GA or mining inc.

So I think we should run an engineer in Moscow and a citizen in St. P.

I forgot about the academy. In that case, we probably shouldn't run any engineers. That also means we don't need to adopt a religion until either a library is up, or we need the extra :)
