SGOTM 11 - One Short Straw

Thanks for the laughs bbp and mushroom ;) Finishing first is fun indeed :lol:

Very nice summary there bbp :thumbsup:

@shyuhe: Oh yeah, lets start spamming our thread to look like playing :p

The CS sling went undetected, it seems.

Yes, plastic ducks thought we had Oracled metal casting or monarchy!

One Short Straw completed Oracle ~2200 and took MC or Monarchy.

I'm guessing OSS took MC... I'd be surprised if someone didn't attempt Pyramids here.

In retrospect I wish we had used the first GS for an academy and hand researching maths. Combined with getting a guaranteed engineer, and avoiding the resultant problems with the pyramids would probably have been just about enough to bridge the gap with Plastic Ducks.

Still can't check any saves, but a little birdie told me Ducks got gems in Delhi circa 2000 BC. That's worth a lot of turns. Now I think we played a better game than they. But we still shuld have captured Aksum and some workers earlier on. For the GG if nothing else. That would have given us a GA which would have shaved more turns.

Not sure when, but yeah they do have gems in Delhi. Their dotmap is quite different, btw. Didn't settle Two Fish. NE is in Delhi with a whole pile of wonders.

I can't find any mention of popping gems in their write-up. Not sure how early they got them, but it doesn't seem as early as 1000BC. Maybe it wasn't worth 10t. If they didn't settle 2FIsh, then that shows the power of warmongering, which we all know anyway. I wonder where they popped their GE. Did they just hope for another prayer answered in polluted Delhi?

Well that is imo the biggest flaw in the SGOTMs, they want to limit randomness by disallowing events, huts and handcrafting a map. There still needs to be something done about popping resources... dunno probably a modification to buffy might do it... but such resources have an immense impact, not only for the commerce but also for the +1:)...

They actually got two GE's, both from Delhi. The first was at 33% in 470 BC - I'm not sure what they used it on, probably their golden age. The second one was at 25% in 445 AD. Their Delhi is currently doing 124 gpp/t without Caste/Pacifism, though. They had plenty of shots at it. The gems popped at 600 BC, which was 2t before they got bureau.

Question: I want the TS-report links in my summary to go to that spot in the thread (like an anchor link on the thread page, rather than a new window with just the one post). How do I do that?

Man, they got a lot more lucky breaks than we did then... We got epic fail at 92% :lol: Looking at the Ducks's city placement, I really can't agree with their use of the 2-fish site. Then again, they went for NE in a wonder rich capital so I guess they weren't as concerned about having a good dedicated GP farm.

Agree with LC - if we had captured Aksum, I think we would have taken gold with our play.

@mdy - Taking a late oracle with Izzy, Saladin, and Justinian on the map would have been very risky. Then again, did any of the teams miss oracle because they went for a late tech?

Congrats to the medal in BOTM 30 shyuhe! :clap:

Spoiler :
Let the spam begin :p

Yeah but my plan failed since Duckweed went conquest too :blush: On the other hand, I could have gotten domination for both the shield and award! Lesson learned - don't play cute with the VC.

:woohoo:
finally a question in this thread that I can answer!

When you copy the shortcut of the post number (at the upper right of each post), you get an html link that looks like:

forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=9421460&postcount=1849
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=9421460&postcount=1849

step 1: change "showpost.php" to "showthread.php"

step 2: delete everything after and including the "&"

you'll get this link:

forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9421460
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9421460

I think that is what you want. :)

Xteam may finish a lot closer to us than I thought...

Ok team, bare with me.

This is the end game here and we are not decided on how to get us to UN. So here is tactical summary of how everything stands and a proposal.

VOTES: There are 502 votes available right now and we will need 311 to win via UN. We have 110 at the moment and individually AI votes are as follows

J = 84
Sal = 44
Z=37
Toku=64
Izzy=75 and
Meh=80

As it is right now, I only see one way for us to win this as fast as possible. Either Gift a city to Toku with UN or create our own colony after building the UN.

But before building the UN, we need MM and that will take between 11-15 turns.

Proposal
UN on the north Island
We can build the UN in few turns in the capital but that won't help. A new city on the north island, on the desert tile next to pigs is a good place. It has 4 forests in the BFC and more outside of it. If we can get 900 hammers from the GE, it become 1125 with 25% boost from OR and the forest will give us 220(4x44x1,25) for a total of 1345 hammers. We will need 155 hammers to finishe the rest and there are a few more trees we can chop to an approximately 112 hammers(3x30x1.25). Now we need about 42 hammers to finish it. @ say 10 gold per hammer, we will need about 420 gold to buy it under US civic. This should be doable by producing gold or selling techs. The whole process should take 2 to 3 additional turns. ===> UN done in 13(11+2) to 18(15+3) turns.

First we should see if Toku will take it. If he does not want it, then we need to create a colony with our own religion. Non of the other AI will like it better than us since they have a different religion and it will not have any trade and open border history.

4 Great People

We need either 3GP's and 1GG or 2GP's and 2GG's. We should go with 3GP's and 1 GG. As CP and Leif noted we can get 3 GP's. I see the First GP in WC after 14-or 15turns and Marville in 3 additinal turns and BHQ in 2 turns after Marville. So to get these GP's to Fur in two turns, we need 8 galleons and another fort on the east side of the fir island. In the mean time, we should be working to get a GG from the 2nd War of Japan.

VOTES
After Completing UN we should revolt to Theocray and Vassalage to gain +mods from all but Toku. At the same time ask our own Vassal to Run a state religion and pacifism or OR. Since we get a free request from our Vassals that they will not deny, this religion request should be our request.

Lets talk of this idea first and then come up with a real plan to execute it.

This whole game should end in no more that 20-22 turns, so I am not in hurry to play untill we get the game plan ironed out. Please rip this plan into pieces so we can buld a sound end game. Thanks.

One other thing, very important I think. Please read the rules thread page 5, threads 97, 98 and 99. Does it say we can change the requirements on the turn after we win the UN election? For example: If we have no religion on the turn the UN Vote come and on the turn after we can establish a state religion. If my understanding is true, then this game is won the first Vote. ;) Please chack it. Thanks.

They're 6t from our Mass Media date, with 11-15t of research to go. Their plans for actually building the UN and getting the votes are slightly confusing. Sounds like about 7-10t behind us for the finish. GE hammers don't get OR boosts, btw.
