SGOTM 12 - One Short Straw

I would PM Alan about the crashing. I also crashed during my TS by excessive alt-tabbing. We should maybe try to limit that somehow. I know there's a lot of consulting to do with the PPP and report-writing...

Not sure how the mod works exactly, but I think those would raise a flag.

I forgot to mention that I PM'd Alan last night. He is aware of the sitution and we are to proceed.

GP Farm: how about a quick barracks build after all? We might wanna whip some maces when we get a chance.

Sounds good and NP isn't a priority. Our drafted muskets will then have 1 experience point, which isn't a ton, but it's better than nothing.

Bermuda: skip Kremlin for now. Intelligence Agency here? For spy farming later?

An intelligence agency is a good idea. The more passibe epp we can generate, the less we'll have to use the espionage slider later in the game!!

Bananas: not sure about Uni. Maybe even settler? For the islands...

Library (it's sooooo cheap) -> settler it is.

Churchill appears to have run a GM mission, and then used the money for upgrades. He didn't have any cash available for trade until this turn, when he showed up with 8gpt + 140g. I'd take all that money now - don't wait 'till next turn. Not sure what he's up to.
Maybe I missed it, but are we selling maps on T+1 if cash available?

Yes, I plan to take his 140g for Paper and his 8 gpt for for bananas. LC already suggested selling maps on T+1, which I've put in the plan I'm working on now.

I like the aggressive move towards Tours. Is 4 muskets really enough? He could end up with random units in the city pre-strike, or have a couple of maces + some trailing and counter.

I have the same concern. What I'll probably do is play T+2 up until after I've taken Nanjing but before I DoW on Churchill (or is it Roosy...). By then we'll also know how the tech stealing has gone and what kind of great person we got from Pigs. Everyone can look over the save one last time to make sure our DoW on Churchill is a go.

If I'm lucky, I'll be able to play tonight. I just have to rework the Marseilles/Indian Ocean Canal worker logistics and the associated galley movement changes, which shouldn't be too hard, but I can't do it right now...

BTW, I hope you guys don't mind how I answer one post at a time. Basically, I'm too lazy to put it all into a single post... Plus I like to answer each post I read as I come to it. Lastly, I'm trying to get my post count up to LC's level, but I have a loooooong way to go! :p

FYI, Churchill is annoyed and won't trades maps with us. Are you saying that we should sell our map to him?
Yes sell our map to Churchill if he has gold next turn is what he meant. Hmm, maybe this is more complicated. How much will Churchill buy our maps for? Maybe we don't have to trade him Paper... checking now...

So this turn we can get 105 gold from Churchill, 50 gold from Rosey and 20 gold from Gandhi for our maps.
If we trade Paper to Churchill we get all of his 140 gold and have some chance to sell maps to Churchill next turn for some gold.
And Rosey would probably still be interested in our maps even if Churchill trades maps with him on Churchill's turn.

So I think the best plan is...
So trade Churchill paper this turn. sell our maps to everyone next turn.
That way we sell our maps with Rosey and Churchill on the same turn.

Can't remember if we have a spy available near Tours, but another possibility would be to send the spy down there first thing on T+1, so you can perhaps gather some info on how many muskets you might need, if more than 4.

And Rosey would probably still be interested in our maps even if Churchill trades maps with him on Churchill's turn.

CHurchill won't sell his maps to Roosy, because he's not Peased with him.

No chance. None. Nada. Zilch. Goose egg.

Good luck!!!

Party on, Garth.

If we get all of Roosevelt's gold for our map, I'll sell him Printing Press on T+2 if he gets more gold in one turn. If not, I'll just pray that he doesn't research it himself in 2T and sell it to him on T+3 instead.

Yes, there is a spy right there. I'll move him forward but stay out of his cities and away from strategic resources and units as I go.

Working on final worker/galley MM now. Will play tonight if I can, but no promises...

OK, my PPP has been updated. I did my absolute best to incorporate all of your suggestions (thanks for all of the input :goodjob:). If you see something wrong, let me know (not like you'll have a lot of time). The biggest change had to do with the Marseilles Canal project and what it did to the workers and galleys. Most changes should be in RED.

I hope to play in a few hours, but we'll see what happens...

looks good Mitchum

Galley 5 arrives in Troy. Spy unloads and sleeps in case she is needed to steal Corporations.
If you have 1 surviving spy you shouldn't drop this one off since it would increase odds of being caught and reduce mission success. At least you shouldn't drop it off until you have tried to steal corporations (that is if you have the espionage for it on T+3)

Might want to send one of the successful spies to Galley City. Gandhi might tech astronomy. I'm not sure if we want to steal astronomy (since it obsoletes the Colossus) or if we would have the espionage anytime soon, but it would be nice to have the spy in place when we do decide to go for it.

Might want to use spy 5 in Mao's former city that Rosey just captured for a counter espionage mission on T+3 or T+4 if you have the espionage for it... (or just wait for the spies being offloaded into Troy and Vlad to do once they have the discount.
I see that spy has a galley to board...
might want to use him or the one being dropped off in Troy for a counter espionage mission if you have spare (yeah right) espionage points. (probably not in the next 3 turns)

Yes, this is all situational and depends on how successful our tech stealing goes on T+1.

We should have a bunch of successful spies in Moscow that can move on T+2 to Galley City if/when we want to steal from Gandhi.

Kids are in bed... wife is still out with her friend... PPP printed out to minimize alt-tabbing... Heineken in hand... here goes nothing!!!

I'll check back in about 10 minutes before starting just in case since I see bbp and bcool on line.

EDIT: xpost with bbp.

Mitchum wait, I royally f'd up.

Same thing happened to me again (I auto ended the turn in the real game when I clicked on the tab where it was minimized.)

I didn't see anything from the turn and closed the game immediately. I'm hoping AlanH will let you continue with the save you have.

I volunteered to him to drop from the team, but I'm hoping that won't be necessary.

Anyways I would hate to ruin all of that planning.

And I'm sorry to screw up the time you had set aside to play this evening.

If you see this message at all.

OK. I'll wait. What I did in my version of the real save was to un-fortify the warrior in Moscow. That way, if I hit enter, it just skips the warriors turn and doesn't advance the game.

In any event, I'll wait to play but my guess is that we'll have to play from your save.

EDIT: My wife just came home and wants to watch a movie, so I'm done for the night anyway. Also, I'd rather play from your save than have you leave the team. You didn't gift away a city and a ton of techs too did you... :D

I discovered I do have the autosave, but I really hope we can avoid using it.

I'm so sorry. I almost want to drop since I'm so embarrassed.

I thought covering it up would have been worse but god this was hard to admit.

Don't worry about it. We all make mistakes. Owning up to it was the best thing to do. We wait for Alan's decision, do what he says, and don't look back!

I wonder if this had something to do with bad karma for knocking the Padres out of the playoffs... ;)

Really, this isn't a major set back. We miss out on a few gold trades and build queue changes. We can still steal the techs we wanted. We can still finish the Marseilles canal on time. Those are the bigger-picture items we need to really focus on.

EDIT: Actually, I guess it delays the tech stealing for 1T unless you happened to bump up the espionage slider to 100%. If not, we just delay one turn. No biggie.

Well after recovering from my horror and embarrassment, I guess it isn't terrible.

negative effects of my screw up if AlanH has us use my autosave.
1) Artists weren't run in Vlad and Troy
2) siberias overflow went into ironworks instead of Kremlin failure gold (1 fewer turns of failure gold availiable)
3) Not sure exactly but war plans will need to be modified and probably are negatively effected?
4) started a few builds that we might not want to complete (cannon in fish for example) delayed a few others (like barracks in GP Farm)
5) tech stealing probably delayed 1 or more turns (Maybe just give Rosey Vlad if we use the autosave and try to just get guilds -- so we can start a grocer in Fish and get the workshop bonuses) And then you have 1 more turn to run an artist in Troy.
6) wasted a lot of hard work especially Mitchum's
edit: 7) possibly missed some lucrative gold trades.

positives?
I don't see too many.
Lesson learned: I will be closing the real save and never minimizing it. (sorry it took me two bigish mistakes before I learned this)

Ok, let's wait and see what Alan says. He must be getting sick of us this week - all three of us have screwed up. :mischief:

Edit: it's a misclick, so I expect we'll be continuing from bcool's autosave. Only fair. We'll have to adjust the plan. It's not really a disaster...

Guys, this is simple.
We always proceed forward with the most recent save we have.
If that's the autosave that bcool now has, then bcool, you simply upload it and we move on.

1. SGs are played on the honor system. We at OSS are playing an honest game. Period. There's nothing for AlanH to adjudicate here. It's covered by the above principle. AlanH's role in this is to use the tools available to him to ensure all teams are doing the above.

2. When we somehow goof up, we also pm AlanH, so he can associate the data he gets from his tools with what happens to us as we compete and follow the honor code.

That's it. There's really no ambiguity here.

-------------

As for your misgivings, bcool, how do you think I felt after gifting Gandhi our third city? At least I could have gifted it to him without giving him the techs, right? But no, I had to go and gift him Galley City AND some techs with it... :crazyeye:

I look at it this way and I encourage you to do something similar:

1. We're a team. We all contribute in a variety of ways. There's no way, imo, that I could have played this game, this well, to this point, by myself. I'm dead certain of that. So if you were to drop out now, that just weakens us as a team. As RL takes people away, we try to adjust, but it's certainly not preferable.

2. AlanH constantly discourages people from opening the game save because this can happen. But opening the game save, which we have collectively done probably about 5000 times so far, has eanabled us to get where we are. So, it turns out there are also some operating costs that go with those 5000 times. Fine. Our game is still better for having opened it up, right? So we move on.

Meanwhile, we try to learn how to minimize those costs, as MItchum recommended earlier, clicking on any unit to override the <enter> function. And by putting "REAL SAVE" notices at various places on the save.

lurker's comment: Wonderfull one-liner!!! Mitchum :goodjob:

LC's words are full of wisdom... you should stay around bcool!
