SGOTM 12 - One Short Straw

I'm fine with playing until the settler is done. Good luck!!

By the way, I'll be on a four-day holiday starting tomorrow and I won't have access to the game. Internet access will be spotty too. I'll keep up with what's going on as best I can...

bcool, not sure you use this, but if you zoom out and toggle on display of culture, it allows you to spot an AI's culture 1 tile deep into the fog. I do this every turn when I'm exploring. It's quick and effective.

I haven't heard of this. How do you toggle culture on and off? I looked at the list of short cut keys and don't see any reference to this.

Zoom out until the icons above the mini map change. Press the :culture: button and you'll see culture one tile into the fog as LC said. I've never noticed this before. :goodjob:

Ok I'll play until the settler is finished, stopping if I find another AI. I'll keep the saves, take all the screenshots, etc.

just finished mysticism and I have 38 GNP with both Med and Poly, so I think that means with 22.5 beakers at 100% research that means only 1 AI knows each of them.

Okay played until settler was built (moved settler 1 space towards fish city site)

Warriors explored north and south areas (see screenshots)

It looks like Paris will be reachable by going south (but will take a lot of roads or a galley to make it in a reasonable amount of time)

Teched mysticism, 1 turn away from finishing meditation

T41 Churchill adopts slavery (so learned BW on Turn 40)
China +6 score (grows 1 pop)
T42 French +5 score (grows 1 pop)
T43 China -17 score (whipped 3 pop)
T44 American +5 (+1 pop)
Stalin +6 (BW)
English -11
Indian -6
T45 Chinese +6 (grows 1 pop)
T46 Chinese +5 (same pop, so tech?)
Indian +6 (learns TW)
T47 Indian +6 (+1 pop ???) (not on top 5 cities)
T48 French +21 (+1 pop and tech?? )

uploaded the save, and since I'll be busy tomorrow someone else can take the save. Only 2 turns 'til fish city is settled.

:goodjob:

Hmmm... I do want GLH...

Maybe finishing Meditation, so we can see if anyone has Priesthood, would be better.

LC's up.

Edit: How long before Paris borders pop again? Should be a while, but I'd like to settle next to that pig on the coast. Edit again: It's no later than T84, but more likely sooner (he's gotta build something cultural). We could have that city up by T75-76, maybe... Not gonna happen.

Edit2: I'm getting conflicting results on GNP for Medi and Poly. LC, could you check?

One AI each knows Medit/Poly.
Two know Masonry, Pottery.
Three know Sailing.

Some AI has persisted in producing only 1hpt for a large part of the game (possibly different AIs have switched places on this). Sure would be nice to know who. If Stalin, he won't build GLH on this side of eternity.

Sooner or later we need to dotmap. I also thought about the site E of pigs, but then we can't settle the possible inland GP Farm that gives us 16fpt at pop5, 8 specialists at pop13.

I'm okay on bcool playing onward Friday or whenever. He knows the MM best, he's only played 8t so far, and we're undermanned anyway. I'm just wondering...what about the CS slingshot after all, since the AIs are lagging on wonders? I think we're on pace to get it circa 1000BC. It would kill any chances for GLH, but Moscow could spend some turns producing a settler or workers.

would be hard to believe. More likely lots of food and going into settler/worker [AI's do so when hit unhapiness].

Giving big food surplus is one of ways to influenece AI behaviour - force int faster settling, which causes some backwardness research wise. But all thi is just wild guess anyway.

As overall goes i do not plan to interact with your micro plans, but on macro [aka philosophical] level going math>Currency is worth only if you can and will get peace with Ghandi [most likely requiring Maths] and somehow trade Currency for Alpha.

If you want to sign early peace with world Alpha>whatever is lot of better.

If you do not want peace maths>construction [+tech HBR] would allow to kill any civ insight at will.

I hardly understand why you are all so panicking about oracle at 1400Ad. It is rather ealy date for Emperor AI and it is rather are seeing Oracle being built before henge [seen on few archipelago maps].

CS at 1000BC means probably you have no granary, no lighthouse... Unless you want gamble on doing Oracle few hundred years later. Third and further cities most likely [unless some tundra fur, silver present in north] slow down research.

Oracle for CoL and playing some quick diplo with free missionaire is always interesting but we absolutely lack targets to convert to our side...

In deep theory i would take GLH over CS slingshot. Although best would be France building GLH in Paris, unluckily that is totally out of control.

P.S. I am not willing to touch official save, so who has met who already?

No one's met, which seems weird. But, they all started without units, and had to fortify their initial archers, so it doesn't mean much yet.

I've already stated that I prefer Alpha>Currency for opening up the most diplo options in the short term, unless someone can show how we turn Math>Currency into an Alpha trade. Also much prefer GLH over CS sling here. Not having Agri/Pottery/BW/Sail until after 1000 BC just doesn't seem very strong. We'll need to expand aggressively after that, and the capital should have a granary and/or some time to grow at least.

1400 BC can definitely be late on Emp, though it varies quite a bit (if deity is 2500-1700 BC, I'd say Emp is 1600-900 BC range). Giving DG marble in the test save caused a 1500's BC date, and it's not impossible that someone has it in-game. I would consider delaying for Sailing, if we would decide to pursue GLH.

@LC,
The GP farm is a bit meh... Short to mid term it kinda sucks. It can't even work a tile for some turns, and then only has a dry rice for the foreseeable future. Edit: I would hope that Paris can serve the purpose later. Or something else we find. Coastal third city is stronger regardless of GLH, as we need to alleviate some production pressure from Moscow, and need exploring naval units.

I'd like to play one turn, so we can see if anyone has PH. Thought bcool would actually play out to T50 or T52. Don't care who plays, but bcool said he won't be around for a couple of days.

Sorry, it would have made sense to play one turn, but I thought LC had some reason to stop me with the settler (maybe so we can change production plans in the capital?).

I'm at work now, so I can't play and I'm going out with friends tonight. The earliest I would be able to play again would be Friday ~5 pm PST.

Edit: so if we all think the 3rd worker makes sense (might want to confirm we can finish priesthood simultaneously) then someone could play that last turn to finish meditation.

It might be worth getting currency with the oracle and actually saving gold (maybe even producing gold) for a few turns and using that to get peace with Gandhi with other techs other than currency. Then use math + some gold to improve relations, then maybe trading currency for Alpha.

Something to test, not sure how much gold it would take.

Got it! (I guess bcool is turning the save over to me.)

Had an extremely busy day today, so I'll see what I can put together tomorrow.

My last attempt at the CS sling had the GS built in about 1080BC, but that was starting from T40 and I can't remember precisely when I started buildng the GS. I thnk it may also have included storing up all our cash for those three turns.

I think what I did was build a library in Fish and worked the gold there. I'm hazy on the other details. It took me a few runs at it to fine tune it.
