SGOTM 12 - T'dr'duzk b'hazg t't

Ubuntu

You must like pain and suffering !

One of my co-workers likes to sing the praises of Ubuntu, but he seems to spend most of his time downloading patches, updating drivers, etc. Of course he might be using one of the beta versions (I know almost nothing about Linux systems).

Even though I'm mostly a PC person, I would vote for the MacBook. We have a MacBookPro that my wife mostly uses, and she hasn't had issues with it. The Airs look really nice.

Finished my first turn!

Workboat isn't going to reach the fish in 4 turns - it'll be 5

SE island looks to be just 2 tiles

I sell Currency to Roosy for 10 gold!

He's now willing to trade tech

Discussion time then...

EDIT: Should I upload the save?

Techs take screen no. 1 unless we fear WFYABTA, on upload, it would do no harm at the very worst.

Actually monotheism is pretty useless for us unless we have a religion. Shame he won't trade maths.

I'm not sure I did the tile micro exactly right (didn't work horses in A-M), sorry guys. A-M grew though, had to bring the warrior back for happiness garrison.

Well it's trade one or nothing, we need the money for maths, and if we're going to trade we might as well take the moeny off him and not vice-versa. And with us not going HA Archery is more useless than Mono.

He's only got 10p though. We could probably get that if we dropped mono and got archery instead.

I agree with Brian: take deal #1. We don't want to give away gold or waste WFYABTA on Archery. We could drop Monotheism from the deal if we don't need it, I suppose. But that's not getting much in return for Aesthetics.

A-M was building wealth so it means we don't have quite as much cash as we would have if I worked the horses.

All the AI seem skint, I don't think we'll get much for currency.

First reaction is that we don't want either trade, but the good news is that he is at least willing to trade techs now!

I think we want about 40g minimum from the AI, for Currency.

Yes, I agree. After some thought, the objective was to open up a trade for Math. We should not take more cheap techs for Aesthetics simply to improve relations with Roosevelt. We've already given him a good deal for Currency.

We've got Poly, so let's self-research Math (per the micro) while we build the Parthenon. We can always check if Roosevelt is willing to trade Math next turn. I doubt this, though, since the AI seems much more reluctant to trade in the real game compared to our tests.

I have had a look at the save (careful, there are unmoved troops).

Spoiler :

A few things to note:

1) Gandhi has Literature!
2) We got Roosevelt to -1 with the Currency trade.
3) Churchill has 40g

I don't think we should panic about Gandhi. I'm happy for us to learn Lit before Maths, but I think we should still try to finish the Parthenon first. We will review this when we learn Lit.

Woah goodness guys. I just turned 20 recently and was feeling very old/unsure of where things are going in my life. (Could get/post a picture if it's the down thing but I dunno) But whose trifles are those to complain about anyway :mischief:

Getting RAM memory card + driver connection or w/e replaced on my computer's motherboard was the diagnosis and actually with things under warranty quite pleased at that. Haven't really checked out running much software again but my hard drive's intact and fine as far as I can tell (which it should be, cause that wasn't affected anyway) So hopefully that too goes well pretty soon but thanks for the support too.

Also Brian I saw you mentioned somewhere about Fall From Heaven 2 and multiplayer and there's actually good news on that, in that there is an excellent but small group of folks who do multiplayer games (and often roleplaying, not super competitive games) on weekends and they'd love to have anyone around if you were ever interested - just find Tasunke or there are a couple threads right in the FFH2 subforum, I might even be around some more random weekends this fall, it is fun and I love that mod, very possibly even more than regular civ.

But enough off topic.

Anyway saw the next turn plan and tech trading moved along. I really don't know which trades to make, Ghandi getting Literature is also annoying, and still don't have a trade for Math.

Actually, wait, I may be stupid here, but were we not able to realize Ghandi had lit because we didn't have polytheism, or was it still on his "Can Research" techs? Though even if he's had it a couple turns he can't be *that* far ahead and we'll have massive production advantages - I could be ok if we went for Lit though just to secure it.

Anyway, I'm not hugely picky on which way we have to do Lit/Math/Civil Service. What works is what works and I'm happy if it does.

I think maintaining a monopoly on Code of Laws might be nice though, but at this point I'd be willing to give Currency/Aes away for worthwhile trades, including gold, even like 80-100 gold as a minimum is worth a lot, it's way less than the beaker value of the tech but might as well get something from it and possibly more diplo bonus. (With Roosevelt, a bunch of cheap-y WFYABTA techs isn't necessarily the best but still I could see it, if we picked up priesthood and saw if any AI had Monarchy though maybe that's a goal too)

edit: two things - in any past screenshots I've found couldn't see (because had to scroll ) if Ghandi had Literature on his "Can Research" so maybe we didn't see it until we got Polytheism. Still, he shouldn't have had it for more than a couple turns, and if we go Math => Lit we have production ,marble, forest chops etc... so really would not lose the race. I'm fine with that plan.

on trades - I agree the goal to get Math was first, but as Monarchy is maybe possible, we should probably self-research Priesthood (really cheap and gets many multipliers of course, prereqs and multis for AI knowing the tech) and then we'll see if any AI have monarchy as well (and trading Aes/Currency to get them up to diplo as well. Monarchy should never be "refused to trade" for any reason like a wonder as well iirc)

oh, and I don't need to butt/jump back into the turn rotation anytime soon if someone was going to politely suggest if I was interested (or if not that's that anyway) I'm ok waiting till the next time and hopefully nothing like this trouble again...and I know the cycle's around to other folks, it's no problem for me and I'm happy with how good everyone else is anyway :)

Worker 9 is building a road on the city site. It must stop immediately and scrub the site instead. If you select it and cancel its action right away, we will only lose one turn of work. If you do anything else, it will finish the road, losing two turns of work.

Ankh-Morpork must work both iron and horses instead of silk and forest.

The fishing boat will arrive on 50BC as planned. I'm not sure why you think this is a problem.

I concur - no trades at this time. If someone has 50+ gold, stop and check with the team. Roosevelt might trade math after we research it for a turn. If this happens, stop and check with the team.

We have a few less gold than anticipated. Check binary research every turn. If we can afford it, run 100% research. Otherwise, run 100% wealth.

You could put the axe in Chirm and send its warrior southwest to explore the peninsula.

I vote for sticking with the plan, build the Parthenon, and see what happens.

Ankh-Morpork and Sto-Lat are in the top 5 cities. We're doing fine.

Gandhi didn't have literature in the last screenshot before my go, it was in his "can research" column.

Thats good news then. We should win the races to build the wonders.

I completely agree. Gandhi isn't Industrious. With our production capabilities we should win the wonder races. I think Neil and Chris have drawn up an excellent plan. Let's stick with it.

Everyone is in the Modern Era because we have Ecology. All the AI will be getting a nice production/research bonus (not sure how much exactly - 3% per era above ancient I think on Emperor).
