SGOTM 14 - Ivan

One short addition: if you can spare a galley, send it to explore the border between Mongolia/Germany. Most probably they are disconnected as well (after that disappointment with Greece :( ). In that case we better leave them alone...

But if they are connected, then they might be quite weak by now, so could be an easy target after Greece. Otherwise you are right: Egypt looks like the best target for the remaining Greek veterans. I think, with Greece, Incaland, Persia, Egypt, America and perhaps one more, we should have the missing 700 tiles you are talking about.
For gaining the other 500 tiles "at home", remember what ignas said: "settlers are better than temples". I think that's right in many situations. A settler costs 30 shields and gains app. 15 tiles immediately (if placed correctly). A temple costs 60 shields + 1gpt and only gains 12 tiles. (The second bump is hopefully out of reach...) A temple should be necessary only in a few cases, where a couple of tiles can't be claimed otherwise.

The cases where a library is necessary (for a faster second bump) should even be more seldom. If we can trade Lit, ok. But it's certainly not worth researching it for that handful of tiles it might gain us.

But otherwise your plan to let the corrupt towns build settlers, sounds good! In 30 turns we may hopefully be close to that 700, and then the settlers will be "ripe" to gain the rest. (If we are faster on the "military" side, we can cash rush the settlers after 20 turns or so.)
But we still need settlers now for our attack and resettling purposes. So I'd say: re-activate a settler pump somewhere, and in addition in strategically important cases we just cash rush a settler right at the point where it's needed.

Here's my thought on the dotmap for the center of our landmass:

fpzoneresettle.jpg

The red dots should both build courts, ducts, and get into WLTKD when possible (needs size 6).

The green dots will be corrupt cities. Build whatever. I think I placed them far enough away to not interfere with the rank corruption of our FP core cities, such as Novgorod and Mecca. Make sure of this though. (Note: Bapedi and Viseau are no longer there as I abandoned them on my turnset. This is an old screenie).

There is currently a settler right near one of the red dots.

I'm curious how you came to your 90 cities number? That seems VERY high. If we take out seven enemy civs completely, that's only about 35-40 of their cities in total, since they're averaging about 5-6 cities each.

I came to the same conclusion (without exact calculation of course, so it may not be 100% accurate). Egypt, Greece, America, Persia, Iroquois, Inca & Aztecs is a total of 31 cities. We add a few settlers and a temple here and there, and each of them should give us 90-100 tiles. 4 more towns to be captured in Korea, and that should hopefully be it?

My worry on planning on settlers for our continent is that we are going to need a lot of settlers for the other continents (we will be doing an above-average amount of raze + replace to cover the right tiles), and the one advantage of culture buildings from our core area is that it doesn't suck out population, which allows those to get back on knight duty quickly.

Of course, if we decide we only need a single culture bump in any particular area, this can all wait.

Plus, almost certainly, one more "holding pen" for civs, unless we can squeeze out the tiles without that problem. But I think we'd probably need one more, or part of one more.

90 was total. + some for resettelment. I had an impression that we have to squize ALL civs to 2 island. But I did not checked tiles.

Have no canse to check Othniel'DM. about corruption that this scheme will cause. My impression that Istambul area should be less corrutive.

Is it possible to have coordinates of new cities? I can run a probram then.

Flights going OK so far...

I've attached three dotmaps which show what I think are sensible plans for capturing additional tiles on our island and on France. That's all I have had time for so far. Hopefully it will be fairly self-explanatory, but just in case, the color code is:

red = new cities
blue = captured cities
pink = temple expansions

Othniel's maps seem reasonable enough near our core as far as using settlers there--with 3-4 space gaps in there, settlers make a lot of sense. Temples are generally used on near-coastal locations where we need them to pick up coastal tiles and settlers just won't do. The one in Moscow may be questionable, but I think it may save two settlers so in terms of shields it's a wash.

At Rostov, it may or may not be more efficient to re-settle the town; there are still a decent number of coastal tiles there that NEED a temple to pick up.

The "good" thing about this is that for the most part we don't need to settle these now, or get the temples built right away. What it did illustrate though is that we may want to relocate the Ottomans for the last time pretty soon, because we do need to both capture one city and build a temple there for maximum effect.

Take a look at these and see if they make sense for the most part.

Looks fine so far. One comment: I think Orleans doesn't need a temple. We will certainly settle Incaland, and the towns there plus one town 2NE of Orleans should "close the gap" to France.

Cheers, Lanzelot

Yes, I do believe you're right about that. It MAY need one, but for some of the tiles that are more north of Orleans. At work now so can't look precisely.

Edit: Never mind, I can see that it doesn't, assuming we settle the two closest available squares to the east and north.

Here's my empirical data for the turns 70AD - 250AD:
(MI and Pikes are counted as 1/2. Captured cities includes retaking of flipped/lost ones.)

Code:
Total Built Lost Cities
64 4 0 1
68 2 1 1
69 3 3 2
69 4 7 2
66 3 0 1
69 3.5 0.5 0
72 4.5 10 2
66.5 3 2 0
67.5 3.5 0 1
71 3 3 1

Too tired now to feed it into the formulas...
Good night.

Hello,

haven't looked at save for a long time and can't look for a few more days. So how is our situation? We are probably very short on knights as DWetzel is counting every coastal tile. Praised work but not that necessary.

In my solo game I would just produce many knights (from core) and settlers (from corrupted towns) and a few more galleys. I won't worry about every coastal tile, just fill in the gaps with settlers in conquered territory. Won't worry about unfinished infrastructure either, it is not necessary and probably won't pay off as the game will be finished in 30-40 turns.

Settlers are overall better than temples in almost all cases that's for sure (Not talking about free temples from ToA). When started using just settlers for fast land grab started winning GOTM's.

Produce settlers from corrupted towns, not from core as every lost citizen in core is lost gpt's. I suppose we have many slaves, so we could join them to towns to bring corrupted town to size 3 if slow growth is an issue there so the town could spit out a settler. Slaves are useless in this stage except for a few roads or forest chops so we shouldn't care about them much. Even could join them for some taxmen.

Firstly rush settlers in towns that have accumulated more shields. I suppose there are quite few this kind of towns in ex-Babylonia and ex-Zululand.

Come to Moscow. Will be less regular now.
Random things: Settlers from corrupted Cities need Cash. Ahd we hoave not enough for upgrade. may it is not that bad to have settlers from core, if replace lost with 1 worker immediatly.
2) about Lancelot description of how conquer Island with "gifts".
a. If AI have fast unit City needs some defence.
b. Better to have own City to heal.
c. We need a lot of Knights to capture one by one City. Or stop ealier.

Good news: I am home from work today due to weather. Should be able to get a good session in...

Bad news: as soon as the power stays on for more than 10 minutes at a time. I am posting this from my BlackBerry.

Guys, I apologize for this taking obscenely long. I haven't forgotten by any means. A confluence of semi-icky events (mostly holiday-related, with multiple ice storms for funsies) involved. I WILL get this done no later than the weekend.

If you're actually reading this on Christmas... go get a life. ;) (That said, I'll no doubt check in a couple of times.)

I hate holiday seasons. Okay, not really.

Four turns in the books so far (well, just started the 490AD turn). Highlights: Greece is 1-2 turns from being conquered. Inca-land should fall next turn. Pasargarde has completed Leo's. Korea a bit slower as Pusan flipped (it was empty) and had to retake it. Lost Delhi on my first IBT when a 3/3 warrior laid the smack down on a 2/4 knight in the town.

Converging a bunch of horses (to be upgraded) and galleys at our south to take out Persia fairly quickly. Have a few settlers heading to Inca-land and Greece to claim territory there.

About 99% likely to finish tonight though.

Hope you made peace with Mongols. Don't forget to gift Inca's to Babylon and Persia. Please, regroupe toward Japan -> Persia.

Reporting back to duty as well...!
Looks like things have been developing kinda slowly over here, but don't worry, DWetzel, I wouldn't have had time to contribute anything anyway: I just had the worst Christmas season of my life, 5 sleepless nights, my wife and the little one had to go to hospital.
But now it's getting better again, the grandparents are here to help out.

Regards and hope all of you had a nice vacation, Lanzelot

Hope all is well Lanzelot.

I will have things done tonight. Taking the day to do two very important things: spend time with the kids, and sleep.

Hope all is OK Lanzelot.

We have some problem with babies these year, hope it will be solved.
I'm happy I don't have these yet :)
