SGOTM 15 - Xteam

I guess you don't believe to much in the whip!?

I typically begin to avoid the whip when I am facing prolonged war weariness (unless I am starving, then I might). The whip makes a bad situation worse. Running extra angry faces just to whip them costs extra maintenance and civics costs. This is not like a normal whip where the citizen is productive the whole time up until you whip.

Worse, the angry face you add from the whip itself, along with the increasing war weary angries, accelerates you to the point where you have so many uphappy citizens you can't work your good tiles (or are starving). Said another way, every time you whip away an unhappy face, you are reducing your workable tiles by one (since you already are at a happy face deficit). Unlike a normal whip when you can't grow the whipped citizen back. If I am in a short war, the I whip. Not in long wars, the cost of the lost population working tiles seems too extreme.

I played until the start of T200, I would like to go on, but turns take a long time and I'll be very short of that over the next few days, so I'm handing it over now. :)

We have a very large army and are advancing towards Babylon where we have met his new stack just outside the city.

The-Hawk - traveling
leif - suffering from a bout of RL.

Will have a look in a while, I hope... :)

Looked at save . . .

Like the way Z has pillage roads to slow any counterattack.

Have no good idea what Ham will do with his forces. Be interested in Z’s best guess, as he’s been dealing with him. Do think we need to be prepared for some adventurous knights moving into our territory as we move our forces forward.

If we pillage the iron, Ham will have to trade for it, or he will not be able to build any more knights.

Let’s build a few more cats quickly.

Suggest that the hill SW of the iron is worth occupying soon, as it will allow us to monitor both cities.

At the moment, the best approach might be to try to reduce his stack and then go after DK first, where we won’t lose so many units to hill city defenders, while sending a couple of siege units with hill defenders to start bombarding Babylon.

Note that we could research Calendar in one turn if we had the gold.

What's the status of stealing tech from Toku?

Nice turnset, Z.

Got it.

Will try to come up with a plan in the next 24h. Only had a quick look and i think we have to go to Babylon immediately before Hammy gets Rifling, because we'll hit a brick wall with our progress in the west if he manages to get that.
Also looks like Eliza is starting to work with the culture slider and mercantilism is changing the AP-landscape quite a bit. :(

Have no good idea what Ham will do with his forces. Be interested in Z’s best guess, as he’s been dealing with him.
Your guess is as good as mine. :crazyeye:
I did see very little activity since I moved in, one cat and one WE earlier, and I think I saw a HA moving around on the IBT.
His trebs are CR promoted, so his original intention was no doubt a counter attack on Borsippa, but I don't know if he'll change his mind now! :crazyeye:

I would move forward onto the grass, he might suicide some knights or he'll move the whole stack around our SOD and go for Borsippa where we should have enough units waiting for him by the time he gets there. :)

Agree with going for Babylon asap.

What's the status of stealing tech from Toku?
We have a spy in Kagoshima but not enough points to steal Monarchy yet, we might have to infect Kagoshima with Hinduism.

Goal would be to capture Babylon asap. Would stop as soon as this is accomplished.

After that, we have a small dilemma. To get any techs out of hammy, we have to make peace, however if we grant him a 10turn treaty at any point of the game, he'll probably get rifles and we're screwed. But lets think about that when we have to ;)

In a perfect world we would get babylon, tech calendar with the capture gold (costs ~250 gold) , get a scientist at slightly low odds, partial bulb astro, continue the war with hammy until he gets rifles and get astro, and one of the island cities for peace atleast. Right now we would get, 140g, Map, music and monarchy.

On the military front, i'm not sure what's the best course of action. Our 1st stack is pretty well prepared for the knights if we would move on the forest, but the trebs are scary. We also wouldn't be able to destroy the survivors of the encounter on the next turn and we would likely meet them in babylon as garrison. Letting hammy on the forest isn't very appealing either, but joining our forces would help us. Either way, i'll move the fast worker to get a sneak peak into D-K.

In the east i'd start to move the small stack out of giza towards satsuma and support it with the units out of thebes and Pi-R to hit egypt in the near future. I'll also will redirect the troops between osaka and kyoto back towards the east.

Workers continue to build workshops and farms where necessary to prepare the empire to start running caste and finally starting our GA in the near future.
Agree with z3 that we'll have to get hinduism into kago, so I'll finish a missionary in bombay (2T) to get out of OR.

We'll get the next GPerson in 2 turns. I think we'll all agree that we want a scientist and if we get him, we're going to use him for astro as mentioned above. What do we want to do with an engineer? We could settle him in Pat, or hold on to him for later. Regardless, bulbing monarchy is the worst choice i think.

Memphis: Treb

Either way, i'll move the fast worker to get a sneak peak into D-K.

Yes - I totally forgot that I brought a worker to be used as a bait (and there's 2 more in Borsippa).
I suggest you move it 2 W, take a screenshot of D-K and then 1 NW and take a screenshot of Babylon, I'm dying to see what's in those two cities..

Goal would be to capture Babylon asap. Would stop as soon as this is accomplished.
Yes, and we will need D-K as well. Think its culture will block and path to Babylon for us. Agree with z, would like to see what is in those cities.

After that, we have a small dilemma. To get any techs out of hammy, we have to make peace, however if we grant him a 10turn treaty at any point of the game, he'll probably get rifles and we're screwed. But lets think about that when we have to ;)
:yup: Let's get Bab and D_K.

On the military front, i'm not sure what's the best course of action. Our 1st stack is pretty well prepared for the knights if we would move on the forest, but the trebs are scary. Letting hammy on the forest isn't very appealing either, but joining our forces would help us. Either way, i'll move the fast worker to get a sneak peak into D-K.
Thinking we should occupy the forest tile. Biggest problem may be if they go around us headed for Borsippa.

In the east i'd start to move the small stack out of giza towards satsuma and support it with the units out of thebes and Pi-R to hit egypt in the near future. I'll also will redirect the troops between osaka and kyoto back towards the east.
Beware a reaction from Ghengis. He is Friendly with Hatse and Furious with us.
She also has a +5 with Shaka. :hide:

Workers continue to build workshops and farms where necessary to prepare the empire to start running caste and finally starting our GA in the near future.
Agree with z3 that we'll have to get hinduism into kago, so I'll finish a missionary in bombay (2T) to get out of OR.
Doubt you can work it in, but Missionaries for our captured Bab cities would be helpful too. Do adding or religion help them come out of resistance any quicker?

We'll get the next GPerson in 2 turns. I think we'll all agree that we want a scientist and if we get him, we're going to use him for astro as mentioned above. What do we want to do with an engineer? We could settle him in Pat, or hold on to him for later. Regardless, bulbing monarchy is the worst choice i think.
Agree. If we get an Engineer, may want to save him to see what we can bulb after we gain techs from Hammy? If nothing good, then settle him.

I'm planning on playing in 24h, but can adjust if the discussion needs time. Will incorporate the changes before green light phase. So fire away with suggestions, ideas, opinions and so on ;)
Sound good.

Well, this happens when you recruit civilians to do intel in enemy territory... ;)

He might live for another try next turn if we decide to occupy the forest tile, but that's the best we're going to get for now.

Goal would be to capture Babylon asap. Would stop as soon as this is accomplished. Need DK too, at least.

After that, we have a small dilemma. To get any techs out of hammy, we have to make peace, however if we grant him a 10turn treaty at any point of the game, he'll probably get rifles and we're screwed. But lets think about that when we have to ;) What is the evidence that he has Gunpowder?

In a perfect world we would get babylon, tech calendar with the capture gold (costs ~250 gold) , get a scientist at slightly low odds, partial bulb astro [Don't think we should immediately use up the scientist with a partial bulb until we're sure we need the partial bulb to get Astro.], continue the war with hammy until he gets rifles and get astro, and one of the island cities for peace atleast. Right now we would get, 140g, Map, music and monarchy.

On the military front, i'm not sure what's the best course of action. Our 1st stack is pretty well prepared for the knights if we would move on the forest, but the trebs are scary. If we move onto the forest, then Ham's stack could go around us and attack our weaker second stack if we advanced it as well, and we want to advance; or, Ham could just move his stack to the hill 2NW of Borsippa and put us in a difficult position. We also wouldn't be able to destroy the survivors of the encounter on the next turn and we would likely meet them in babylon as garrison. Letting hammy on the forest isn't very appealing either, but joining our forces would help us. Yes, suggest we do that. Ham has few units that will benefit from the forest defence and we have lots of siege weapons. It would be good if he just moves onto the forest in front of our combined stacks.Either way, i'll move the fast worker to get a sneak peak into D-K. Suggest moving the supermedic up as well and advance all the trailing units. They are safe for the next IBT on the tile our second stack is on now.

In the east i'd start to move the small stack out of giza towards satsuma and support it with the units out of thebes and Pi-R to hit egypt in the near future. Not sure we want to move to many too far too fast. Can't afford war weariness until we have peace with Ham, and the Mongols could attack. They don't like us very much. I'll also will redirect the troops between osaka and kyoto back towards the east.

Workers continue to build workshops and farms [What about waterwheels and windmills?] where necessary to prepare the empire to start running caste and finally starting our GA in the near future.
Agree with z3 that we'll have to get hinduism into kago, so I'll finish a missionary in bombay (2T) to get out of OR.

We could settle him in Pat, or hold on to him for later. Regardless, bulbing monarchy is the worst choice i think. Suggest we hold either one in hand for the moment.

Illi: Lib Going to whip the CH? If so, might want to wait until a missioanry converts the city, so that there is good overflow into the library.
Opis: Wealth
Bor: granary

I'm planning on playing in 24h, but can adjust if the discussion needs time. Will incorporate the changes before green light phase. So fire away with suggestions, ideas, opinions and so on ;)

We are ahead of most teams, leif. Are you sure AlanH is going to insist on the time limit? It's a truly challenging game.

Cities (build after the current finishes)

Memphis: Treb
Pi-R: WE

Eleph: Temple
Alex: Wealth After the Buddhist temple, I would build a missionary for Illi
Giza: Wealth or Rax Maybe Rax while we are in OR
Illi: Lib Agree with CP, spread Hinduism and whip CH
Opis: Wealth

I have been putting hammers into the NE in Bombay and we should continue doing this somewhere, if possible, as long as we are in OR at least. :)
Or maybe we should build gold to be able to research calendar before peace with Hammu. Decisions, decisions, decisions..... :crazyeye:

Ham could just move his stack to the hill 2NW of Borsippa and put us in a difficult position.
If we join forces where our 1st stack is this is not so bad! In my eyes it would be worse if he moves his stack onto the other side of the river, 1 NE of our 1st stack.
Agree with advancing trailing units and supermedic. :)

Yes, I'm quite sure.

This exchange from the Maintenance thread:
The deadline is May 21st, 2012. If like GOTM-14, the deadline is the last second of May 21st on the east side of the international date line, won't that be slightly (roughly 9 hours) more than two weeks to the deadline?

If this is not the case, some Teams might appreciate a clarification of the time (on May 21st) of the deadline. Post #1 of this thread doesn't mention the time of the deadline; only the date.

You are correct. However, given that most people would not read my message until some time after I posted, I felt I was justified in adding a slight sense of extra urgency to the message.

I really do hope that teams are not going to play right up to the deadline this time. It's playing with fire.
