SGOTM 16 - Fifth Element

The final save doesn't show up until everyone is done.

I see. To bad we asked for an extension. Waiting an extra ten days. =(

You did a huge favour to Kaku and Xteam especially.

Good work team! Congrats to the Laurel Winners, and as always, good work to the team creating new and different things to mess with our heads!

Kakumeika did not need the extension; it simply allowed us to leisurely finish the game (Jan 24th) with yet more micromanagement.

Congrats on finishing Fifth Element! Without using the extension you asked for. ;)

Great finish, guys!:goodjob:

Shall we try to have some retrospect and see what we can improve on.

It think we should have gotten more cities earlier. I see an other team building oracle on turn 82.

Could anyone answer a couple of questions I have from looking at plastic ducks game.
How could they found chatres so close to an other city?

I got confused by how they got thier legendary cities, I can see them beeing at war at turn 235. How did they manage to give them two cities and then capture the cities on turn 235 again? Should they not be stuck in a 10 turn peace?

Reviewing our game is a very good idea. Currently I'm in the process of reading Kaku thread. (Already read PR.) After I'm ready, I will read PD thread, and then I will try to collect some things that I think were inferior in our game.

I already know some:
1. We didn't build enough early wonders. GLH or mids should have been built.
2. We didn't move capital to Orleans. Much better bureau site.
3. We were too afraid to REX. Our economy could have handled more expansion.
4. We didn't prioritize culture enough, this costed us many GPs. With some more planning, we could have gotten more merchants/scientists, and they would have helped a lot in getting ahead in tech, and securing us midgame free GPs and wonders.
5. Sushi first would have been better. (I feel particularly guilty about suggesting MI first.)

@Folket: you don't have to be at war, to give cities away. That doesn't bring a peace treaty with it, and let them use espionage-culture with massive espionage discounts.

Cities on different landmasses don't have the same distance rules as normal. It's only when cities are on the same island that they have the minimum distance of 3.

@Shaandore:
1. Yeah, we should have recognised there would be enough coastal and island sites to justify GLH.
2. No. The big benefit of Orleans as capital is in the first 100 turns with the extra production. After that, it doesn't matter so much so a rebuilt Palace isn't too important.
edit: unless you mean going for a settler walk. In that case, yes we should have moved.
3. I strongly disagree. We tried to do a fast science start, except we didn't get the fast science. We were at least 20 turns late to Oxford. Oracle->MC was a complete waste of time because it didn't help us in achieving that.
4. There's a lot to improve on in the GP management department. I don't think I can sum it up in one line.
5. Yes. It would have let us grow our cities sooner and thus get our endgame artists on time.

But they were at war. Can you give cities away without making peace with people?

Here's the process (part 2) for the culture trick (linked in post #2 of our thread).

Ragnar = SB... it's just the AI that I had in the test game. Also, we finally decided to do it on T235 to benefit from the extra beakers.

Basically, Cease Fire >> gift cities >> spy missions >> DoW >> re-capture.

I think one of the problems was that I lost the test game save. It would have allowed us to play out our economy some more turns. Which would lead to much better micro for at least 50 more turns. Seems like some kept the test game running for quite a while. I will not do that again.

Thanks, I never use cease fire myself. What is the reason cease fire exists in the game?

3: I think our oxford date itself was good. It was early, and our cities were (relatively) prepared to whip the universities. We had education t150, PD had Education on t174, so we probably had Ox before them. On t150 we had 10 cities, and PD have already started the war, so with their early rexing they had 18 cities at that time :crazyeye: Of course we couldn't have payed for so many cities without GLH. On t174, we just conquered Bibracte, when they were already preparing for taking out Rammy.

Keeping the junk cities set us back for a while. We started the war much later, so Brennus' land was unable to contribute for a long while. Even that late his land was underdeveloped. We had about ~20 turns difference in the Brennus war.

I guess we hoped that Brennus would develop his own land but he just spammed cities.

We used it a lot in the SG where we took the Bronze (Russia's revenge or something).

It was just that it seems to be a feature that all it does is to make you able to trade with people you are at war with. If that is what they wanted why not just enable trade when at war?
