SGOTM 16 - Maple Sporks

I do like the comment some people made earlier about what do we need to reveal with the W (or not reveal) to affect our decision on settling. Do we need to reveal those tiles to make up our collective mind? If not, then SW is definately the way to go for the W.

Every little bit of knowledge helps, especially when hidden resources are at stake. Warrior 1N is really strong because it reveals 3 tiles with a possibility of resource, 2 of which are inside our BFC if we choose to SiP. This info WILL definitely help us determine whether to move the settler or to settle in place. 1SW on the other only reveals a forest (which at max has a very low chance of a fur/deer resource) and tiles that are 3-4 away from our settler so it offers very limited or no useful information in this respect and is thus strictly inferior to both 1N and 1NE (which provides some information but nliekly wouldn't help us).

I agree with the warrior 1N. It is the only move which will be relevant for determining if we want to SIP.

Looks like we've decided on Warrior 1N; now, let's discuss some other opening stuff:
Does anyone have an opinion on starting build? I'm for worker first.

And it might be a good idea to have some outlines on the techpath, even though there are still a lot of unknown variables in play.
IMHO, we're going to need BW fast, to make use of all those forests around, meaning Mining > BW early on. Also if we're going after the Oracle, Myst > Med/Poly > Priesthood will be necessary as well, as well as prereqs for the tech we want to take.
Good thing is that we start with TWheel and Agri, so we can get a discount on writing by researching pottery Writing.
I'd leave AH/Hunting for now, unless we got the resources in the vicinity.

Sorry that Google spreadsheet won't work. Is it worth trying to figure out a way to accomplish it?

Ok, so nukes it is.
We could just use a regular spreadsheet and attach it to posts, or use dropbox, or I could whip up some small upload web-app to take care of storing the thing.

Worker first is almost always the best move. Especially since we have the Wheel, he will never go idle.

Hunting is always good to leave until later to allow you to keep building warriors. We're going to need quite a few for fogbusting (Hemispheres has a lot of land)

Depending on whether we want to Oracle a deep (more expensive) tech, we might want early cottages to help research pre-requisites. So then we would need to fit in Pottery. We also want early alphabeth, to build the spy needed to steal IW.

How about Oracling Currency? A CS slingshot will not be possible on Emperor with such a low-commerce start.

It sure is, but as long as we're discussing things, best to let every element be come by, to make sure we're on the same page.

Not quite familiar with Hemispheres, but I'll take your word for it. I agree that hunting should indeed wait if in any way possible. Fogbusting gets expansive otherwise.

That would allow us to rex a lot harder.... I'm fine with it in general, but we'll have to look at the available commerce to make a decision.

AlanH has mentioned in the maintenance thread (subscribe to it!) that the saves will become available just after midnight september 21st CST, which I think is at 8 in the morning CET. I don't know about Ondskan, but apart from Norvin I think we're all in that time zone, if we conveniently forget about the hour difference on pigswill's funny little island. :p

I guess it's a good moment to bring back the basic do-s and don't-s of SGOTM, specifically also for astre and Ondskan who are new to the format as far as I can tell. Sorry if the following sounds pedantic or redundant, but better save than sorry. :)

First of all, game saves should be downloaded from and uploaded to the SGOTM progress page (see link in the maintenance thread for instance). On this page you'll find all participating teams with links to their respective saves and team threads. So please only click on our own links! Consulting either thing of other teams could lead to a disqualification for the whole team.

Secondly, any form of reloading or playing ahead is strictly and totally forbidden. Any of us can download the current save, open it and look at it, but any irreversible action is out of the question, as it can be regarded as playing ahead and undoing it would constitute a reload. The BUFFY mod is designed to detect this, so basically if you do this you at least disqualify yourself from further participation and quite possibly the whole team. If you do happen to do something irreversible, you should save and upload and we play from there.

Typical things you CANNOT do (not exhaustive list):
- Move units
- Use unit-specific actions. You can't order a worker to start an improvement, you can't actually settle with a settler, you can't do a spy mission, you can't spread a religion with a missionary, you can't actually do anything with great people (bulbing, launching GAs, GP specifics), attack, bombard with siege, etc. All these are irreversible.
- Whip, draft, rushbuy
- Change civics or state religion
- Make any deal with an AI, make demands or declare war
- Hit end turn (obviously)

What you CAN do (but beware of trembling fingers...)
- Open city screens
- Fiddle with tile and specialists assignments
- Change build queues
- Open any of the information screens (F1 etc)
- Fiddle with the gold/research/culture/EP sliders
- Change EP assignment
- Check what kind of deals AIs sre willing to make ("What do you want for this?") as long as you don't actually make them
- Check combat odds, but of course without actually attacking. This one obviously is not highly recommended with trembling or sweaty hands. :)

I'm surely forgetting stuff, but the basic thing is to not do anything irreversible. In case of doubt, PLEASE ASK first.

Also, please set your autosave interval to 1. This is done in the ini file. In case you suffer a crash when it's your set, then at least you can play back from the same turn. In case a crash happens, you should report this to AlanH and the rest of the team of course and try to replay as closely as possible to what you did before your crash.

Well, that's that. Not to take away from DS's new and bright leadership, but I felt a post of this nature was still needed before play commences. :)

Expansive it is by definition, expensive it can become :mischief:
Sometimes, I think: I really should read back what I typed before I post. But where's the fun in doing that

Thanks nocho. Since I'm the leader and not the manager of this team, I have absolutely no problem with others doing my work for me. I like a leadershipstyle that is empowering, so if anything, it accounts of good leadership that your team does things spontaneously and intrinsically motivated

Isn't it 7am CET? anyway, what's more important (and unclear to me) is whether it 7/8am on Friday(21) or on Saturday(22)

If I understood AlanH correctly, the save will be available at 7:00 21-09-2012 (dutch time = UTC2), which is 0:00 21-09-2012 CST (= UTC-5).

Great leadership qualities indeed DS! :goodjob:

I might have missed an hour due to daylight saving, or because I have no clue about time zones. :mischief: In any case I interpret it as the 21st. You'll notice tomorrow when you're eager to post a bazillion screenshots before going to work. :p

Btw I'm away for the weekend but will try to keep in touch through the phone. Don't expect large treatises from me though.

And yes, worker first and heading for BW seems standard procedure, unless we find something surprising.

thx nocho for the rules :)

small clarification: If i download the current save to look at it, I do not need to upload it back.
I'm I right?

And i expect to have a picture of the warrior sight before I wake up tomorow :)
