SGOTM 16 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

I can play a few turns if no one else wants to.

Yep you can't do any worse than me... So I expect a steal of IW and a GE.. oh plus a city for the sugar/gems... ;)

Good luck Ronnie1

Edit: Forgot the succesful beg of mono as well.. :)

1 Turn PPP

Turn 1(now)
Beg Mono from Brennus, if no
Do we trade for it now?
If successful do we switch to OR immediately?

I think this is actually a great place to pause!

When we get to OR, our ability to whip buildings with forges goes to 150%. We may want to whip a little where we have excess food.

How many buildings are we actually building? It seems to me that in the near future most of our cities will be producing either Research or units.

The costs associated with changing to OR are a turn of anarchy + extra civic upkeep costs. OR is one of the High Upkeep cost civics. Possibly the added cost can be shown to us by hovering the mouse over the civic change in the F3 screen?

I've neglected the positive effect on our diplomatic relations with Bren and Ram, mainly because I don't see the utility of befriending them to that extent.
Re Brennus: we won't get Friendly with him fast enough to get any value (eg, monopoly tech trade) before we declare war on him.
Re Ram: he is a different religion, so the civic bonus won't help make us Friendly, only Pleased, which probably isn't really worth the cost. (Note, Ram still trades techs/OB/resources at Cautious).

Another point to consider - if the beg does work out, we should think about bulbing Theology with the GProph. This is something I am in favour of, assuming Christianity hasn't already gone elsewhere. A revolt to Theocracy could be much more useful than OR.

This all assumes the Monotheism beg is successful. I'm not particularly optimistic.

I wouldn't trade for Mono atm or if the beg is successful change to OR. Its worth seeing what GP we get and stop there. Then again if its a GS or GE I would carry on to the next steal attempt and see what happens.

PPP went up into internet heaven....

T1

Cities

Paris, Research> 2Sci + 1 Eng + Farm + Mine, food neutral
Orleans, Research, 2 Cottages + Horse + 2 Sci, food neutral
Lyons, Research, 4 cottages, growing this turn, if we are really losing hammers on the chariot, will finish it.
Rheims, Research, Clams + Pigs + 2 mines + Sci, +4 food, growing in 4,
Tours, Granary > Corn + Cottage, + 2 mines, +3 food, growing in 9
Marseille, Granary > Clam + mine, + 3 food, growing in 8

T2
Lyons, newly size 5, 4 cottages + mine and finish Chariot if losing hammers, research if not losing chariot hammers using sci instead of mine
Worker chops forest for Granary in Tours

T3
Tours Forge

T4 stop after attempted IW steal

Looks good Ronnie, thanks for stepping in. Only question is on not waiting 5 turns for max spy discount. (I don't think it makes any difference to success odds; maybe the leftover EP from waiting another turn would be useful?).

after the miniset: Would think settling the GS as well if that's what we get? Since we are considering an all out war on Brennus, using a GP (if we get a 2nd) for Theology sounds tempting, both to guarantee a 3rd religion on our continent and for the civic itself.

I will be on a trip again the next four days, probably unable to post. May the dice gods be with our spy.

Looks good Ronnie1. I would look to farm another grass in Paris to help it grow when we actually have some happy. :)

Yes, I didn't cover a lot of worker actions. Will take those on an individual basis when they open up.

From memory, Paris food as noted, Tours food also, Orleans, Lyon, and Rheims should be fine, Marseille needs connected and workers in area to chop/mine gems and pasture pigs.

I was moving a worker down to assist with the gems. Might be worth building a bit of road on the way till your successful steal. :)

Another bonus of learning Theology would be to immediately trade it out to Ram and Bren. If we're lucky they will build the AP for us. Better to have it on our continent than far away.

Mini turnset looks good Ron. I think have Lyons build the chariot.

Ram won't trade with us anymore though. Could always gift it!!!!! Not keen on that though.

I played to T120

Everything mostly according to PPP.

I decided to let a couple of our cities grow into unhappiness so we could whip some workers in anticipation of the upcoming chopping frenzy. ;)

The bad news is that at T120, we are still only at a 30% stationary discount and can't attempt IW yet.

The other bad news is that Brennus just moved a settling stack into view.
REAL REASON FOR STOPPING!

The good news!
I forgot to beg T117, but I remembered T118 when I re-read the PPP and Brennus said yes!

A GE was born in Paris! Bulbs Machinery

We can 3 pop whip a settler after 1 turn in 2 cities and possibly beat Brennus to the final 2 good spots. We have 4 cities that could be 3 pop whipped, but Paris is out because it has so little food. Leaving Orleans, Lyons, and Rheims available to whip after 1 turn of production.

I think we should whip 2 settlers and 1 worker after 1 turn of production. That means 2 * 3 pop whips + a 2 pop whip. I think 1 of the settlers needs to be Lyons because it is the closest and has the best chance of beating Brennus, and still not sure it is doable anyway. The glimmer of hope is that Brennus' axe that I thought was just going to Cuman may be leading to a different spot that is a bit further away hopefully.:dunno:

Great that the steal And beg worked!

I don't have a lot if time to properly comment right now. Seems to me that given we are about to go to war with Bren, why not just let him settle. Either he puts then in good spots and we keep them, saving a settler build, or we just raze them and replace at our leisure.

Has Christianity been founded? Should we bulb Theo?

The steal has NOT been attempted yet, still not enough points at the current stationary level.

Theology NOT learned yet either.

Managed a very quick look at the save before rushing into work..

Well done on the Mono beg Ronnie. Sure he would have refused me.. Just have to make sure you do a successful steal of IW as well.. ;)

The GPs open a few possibilities now. As we are going to attack Brennus I would bulb Theo and adopt theocracy. 5xp units esp cats will help a lot in the attack and in theory save us some troops with the higher experience.

Ditto bulb Machinery after the IW steal. Might be an idea to make sure we have iron before bulbing machinery though?

Settlers?? Can we beat Brennus to the sugar/gemsite?? If so I would like to see us settle it before him. Second settler it might be an idea to see if we have iron somewhere before use?

What I'm not keen on though is building the AP with the GE. Although we would get 2 hammers from all our non-existant Buddhist buildings so would Brennus. and wouldn't want to give him the boost.

If Oz is still out of action it would be worth playing a couple more turns to try the IW steal.

I do not intend to play any more until we get the settling situation worked out.

I would like to see an exploring boat for the NE + a galley for exploring/settling the island to the NW.
