SGOTM 16 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

I've moved the Settler 1SW & the Warrior 1W at the start of the next turn. Sadly, no new food resources were revealed. There is the Floodplain tile where we thought it was, and a Silk tile was revealed.

A Farm on the Floodplain with the Corn Farm would gives us two 5-food tiles to work in a Capitol City, and a Silk Plantation down the road would be useful in our Capitol if/when we adopt Bureaucracy, so founding the Capitol where the Settler is now may not be too bad.

I'm not sure we want to wander around too much longer. What does everyone else think?

Screenshot & saved game attached.

I'd stick with settling where we are now. It's not great but the prospects for finding better seem low since we've reached the western edge of the corn range.

One point: a farmed floodplain is 4F, not 5. Neither here nor there but I would likely cottage it...the capital is lowish food but (assuming we go the mostly cottaged Bureau route) farming it would boost early growth a little but it will still eventually 'stall out' with all those plains tiles...

Not many options from what I see.

1) Settler where we stand now
2) Settle original location

I don't have a preference.

Settling where we are now vs. Returning to starting location...

Both sites would have the Corn & Floodplain in the BFC. If I counted correctly, both sites would have an equal number of riverside tiles, hills to be mined, and forests to chopped/improved.

IMO, where we are now has a slight advantage for two reasons...
  1. The Silk would be in the Capitol's BFC.
  2. If we wanted to create the Crab/Fish city to the SE, there would be less overlap with the Capitol.
That's how I see it, what does everyone else think?

Time to post some numbers for the two options?

1) Original location (riverside plains tile)
  • 10 BFC forests
  • Max +7 :food:/turn if farming corn and floodplain.
  • 12 :hammers:/turn if working 2 plains mines and 1 grass mine.
  • 5 grassland tiles, 2 of them riverside.
2) Settler where we are
  • At least 10 BFC forests (including silk, possibly more in fog)
  • Max +7 :food:/turn
  • 13 :hammers:/turn working 3 plains mines.
  • 5 visible grassland tiles, 3 of them riverside.
  • Potential to improve, as still some unrevealed tiles.
  • Interferes less with future fish/clam city.
  • Claims the silk, which is a little consolation.

My preference is to settle where we're standing.

Thanks for the detail Adrian!

I vote for Adrian's detailed analysis!

Looks like 5 (including me) for settling where we are now, so I'll go with that. Here is a quick turn set plan...

Found Capitol where Settler is now, this turn.

Initial City builds = Worker, Warrior x2, Settler for City #2.

Research = Mining > Bronze Working

Unit Moves
  • Warrior 0 = explore West down river
  • Worker 1** = Farm Corn, built Mine, Farm Floodplain
  • Warrior 1** = explore NE toward Coast
  • Warrior 2** = Sentry in Capitol
** = if/when built

Diplomacy = set Espionage for 1st Civ met to +1

Pause/stop after learning Mining, if AI Civ encountered, anything unusual happens.

Can start anytime with concurrence on turn set plan.

How many turns are you planning on playing?

Are there any STOP conditions? (warrior gets eaten for example)

I think there are four things we should decide, and I think we are pretty much in agreement.

  • Settle the city.
  • Build = worker. (Not actually much discussion on this, but it's the right move pretty much all the time, and this start position seems no different)
  • Explore with the warrior.
  • Research = Mining. (Improve powerful hill mines, on the way to BW for chopping)

Decisions beyond this - eg, techs after BW, build after worker, future city locations - do not affect the next 15 turns or so.

I'll play at least until Mining has been researched, guessing that will be at least 6 or 7 turns, and post an update. Will also stop for any unusual encounters, which hopefully won't include Warrior 0 being consumed by a furry creature.

I think there are four things we should decide, and I think we are pretty much in agreement.

  • Settle the city. We have a consensus for settling where we are now.
  • Build = worker. (Not actually much discussion on this, but it's the right move pretty much all the time, and this start position seems no different) Agree
  • Explore with the warrior. Agree
  • Research = Mining. (Improve powerful hill mines, on the way to BW for chopping) Corn Farm then Riverside Mines 1st!

Decisions beyond this - eg, techs after BW, build after worker, future city locations - do not affect the next 15 turns or so. Agree
EDIT: Unfortunately NONE of the hills appear to be riverside. :(

I'm considering whether it might make sense to do Mining->Pottery->BW with starting a cottage on the FP.
Couple of reasons:
1) The capital is low food, we are unlikely to whip it much and almost certainly not before granary.
2) low commerce start - good point Ronnie on all of the hills being not riverside. Getting one cottage early might pay off more than normal.

From fog gazing I am pretty sure there is a grass hill 2N1W of where we are/where capital city settled.. My skillz aren't good enough to have any idea whether it is forested. If it is clear, then we can improve 5 tiles (corn, 3 mines, FP cottage).

However since Griff is planning on pausing after finishing Mining, we can discuss then.

I vote settle where we are as well.

Tech mining and see what the land arounds looks like before carrying on so mining seems the place to stop.

For info I'll be away for a few days this weekend.

Paris has been founded, and we have learned Mining. The saved game has been uploaded to the Progress & Results page, or you can get it here...

Warrior 0 followed the river to the NW coast, found a potentially good coastal city site with 3 food resources, which I have marked with the BFC Grid in White. There is also a Wheat tile off to the SW, and some Incense to the West.

I have put Bronze Working in for the next Tech to research, but Zero :science: invested. Currently 14 turns to complete BW; if we want to change to Pottery, that is currently 9 turns to complete.

We haven't met any AI Civs yet, but Buddhism was founded somewhere. I renamed our initial Warrior as "Warrior 0".

News Update: Humbaba is still alive

I'd like to play up through the next Tech we learn, what should that be?
  • Bronze Working?
  • Pottery?
  • Something else?

I usually try not to chop TOO much before Math. The extra 50% per forest really adds up over time. Pottery > BW > Writing > Math my be an option.

The worker can farm the Corn and build 1 mine the start, then cottage a bit.

Or we just go BW next and chop settlers ASAP.

I see a few good city sites. Griff stuck 1 in the save, I stuck another in Red in this screenshot. The site with the 2 seafoods needs to be on the list also.

What do we want to try and take from the Oracle, or would we rather just REX ASAP?
