SGOTM 17 - Unusual Suspects

I like working scientists and slow building the galley. Would we switch to mines to build the settler? (edit: for Copper city)

Yes, work all mines while building settler

What about the alternative, which is to not work the mines while building the galley, but instead work scientists? We won't get the galley for quite a while, which could work well with a settler for the island.

I think I'm experiencing deja vu, since that's what I was advocating for a while back and you said the second GS isn't as important...!

Hehe, yes I think you are right. We went the long way around.....

Though, we aren't doing it for the GS as such, rather because we don't need the galley as early, and my brief testing shows it shaves about two turns off Aesthetics.

Here is my best effort for now, based on Trys & Chris' efforts, with input from SH. 500ad (t85). Basically it is later Copper city but much better economy due to Rathaus whipping.

Aesthetics is in on t80, 5 turns earlier, and Phantastic has 80 hammers into Parthenon on the same turn. It will be finished in another 6-7 turns.
We have 129g in the bank, and we can sustain 50% research.
Copper city will be founded next turn, Literature in 3 turns at 100% research. Galley finished in 2 turns.

Interestingly, in the test save Mansa offered us Calendar for Aesth + 75g.

That looks really good. Running the scientists is definitely the way to go. I think I'd build another worker before the market in Pork Central.

If we agree on the tech path (Aesthetics next or beeline Optics?), I can draft a PPP.

Yes I agree, I had us changing it in the micro to worker/settler at pop 6, just forgot to do it. Problem as I had 1 turn growth to get to pop 6, so I put it as a placeholder.

But now you mention it, what about a warrior for the 1 turn?

That would be fine. We'd need to trade away iron (as SH suggested), or could just put hammers into an archer. We'll need more MP units soon enough.

Oh yeah, if we can't do a warrior, I think I would rather put the hammers into a Chariot, as then if we do have barb pressure somewhere, we have an available chariot to 1t whip.

That would work too. Hopefully with Mansa to the west and the edge of the map almost everywhere else, we won't see many more barbs. They can still spawn east of Phantastic unless we move a spawnbuster to that area.

Not for much longer, in my testing Phantastic popped its borders before 500ad, and there is no longer room to spawn, except in the NE corner, and I just kept the exploring archer there.

Based on neilmeister's micro, I propose the following PPP:

PPP t69-80

Tech: Aesthetics? (6 turns at 0%, 4 turns at 100%)

If we still want time to decide whether to pursue Aes vs. MC (Optics beeline), we can research Aes at 0% and see if Mansa gets it, or if another AI builds the Parthenon. Since this plan would get us the Parthenon on t86 or t87, I am inclined to try for Aesthetics.

AI: Trade Currency and Alphabet to Mansa for CoL, Med, and Poly THIS TURN. Check tech trades each turn. Pause if he researches Aesthetics.

City builds:

Silver City settled on the white dot.

Aachen: settler (WHIP this turn for Silver City) > partial galley (running scientists) > settler (for Copper city)
Phantastic: worker > worker > rathaus (WHIP) > Parthenon
Pork Central: worker (WHIP this turn) > chariot > rathaus
Supercity: granary > library
Iron City: granary (WHIP) > library
Silver City: Monument (WHIP) > granary (will switch immediately to granary if there is religion spread)

Worker micro: see neilmeister's tab on the spreadsheet.

Stop/pause conditions:

  • Aesthetics complete or we can research another tech at 100% on the slider
  • Meet new AI
  • Mansa researches Aesthetics
  • AI civ completes Parthenon
  • Barb problems
  • General weirdness

Mansa never spread religion there in the test game. Silver city can work improved pigs immediately, meaning it can whip the monument quickly when it reaches pop 2 in 4 turns and grow back quickly. Without the silver mine it won't have much production for a long while.

Green from me.

Since this plan would get us the Parthenon on t86 or t87, I am inclined to try for Aesthetics.

Just to clarify, Aesthetics is in on t80, but Parthenon is finished 6-7 turns from the end of my test, which was t85. So it will be done t91-92
