SGOTM 18 - Unusual Suspects

IIRC, we didn't really consider culture as an option, but I missed this conclusion:

It is not easy to see how a Culture victory would work. The Swinger's Pad could use culture through espionage, but that means some other culture must be there. Not sure if a minor civ makes that possible. Note that the "two cities can't use espionage" criterion is just nerfing the exploit Ducks used in SGOTM16 to get fast legendary cities; you can just play a normal low-espionage culture game and fulfill the constraint so long as you do not culture-bomb the Swinger's Pad. However, a "normal" fast culture game (stop tech at about Lib) will likely not have the tech to get to the lair.

In the best conditions, even under HoF spam starts, traditional culture victory is not that fast, especially without the philosophical trait, not to mention the FR requirement Of course... if I had followed my own advice and played all three victory conditions out to completion with a test game as I suggested, I would have realized this. (Yep, those galldarn test games are too much of a crutch!)

I think culture victory was the least compatible with paratroopers requirement.
MM is only 3 techs away from paratroopers (physic) and win straight away while culture still needs 2 more legendary cities. in a game were gold must be deviding between EP (for swinger), beaker for flight and culture for 2 LC, it could be quite hard.

Yeah, I agree with astre.

On the face of it, Culture was not really compatible. If they pull it off, it will be impressive.

This was exactly their point, and why I stated that I never had this realization. The context makes it look like they went culture, but they certainly did not.

I still have to understand duck's strategy :)
except : get max land, win :crazyeye: (can't take 4-5 hours to read their +200 pages of posts)

I think they could reach all victory condition from this point

Land is power ain't it ;)

The suspense is unbearable to me at this stage :bounce::hammer2:

Congrats guys! It was fun watching the game as a bystander this time around, but I spent so much time reading threads I might as well have been playing! Maybe next game...

Seconded!

Sign ups are open

Are we going to split the team?

I know I want to play a really tight game and try and medal.... but I know I am not one for maintaining test games past about t100.

I can go and play with another team if the rest of you guys want to play a more casual game..... I could even try to resurrect to A'pos'tro'p'hes

Let's wait a bit and see how the signups go.
I like being on US, but I feel I don't contribute to medaling. I'd like to play more turns, which is harder on a large team and I don't want to spoil medal chances. Plus you are the one that suggested 4 man teams in the staff forum.

Yeah, I personally think smaller teams is the way to go, but I wasn't sure how much support there was for it. I have also really enjoyed playing with all the US and Dwarves as well, but I know I can be a little domineering and the high level discissions can alienate some team members.

That is why I stated my goals of playing a tight game and medaling. If we are going to split the team, I imagine it will be along those lines.

I'm willing to be on the "trying to medal" team. I'm not super confident in my abilities, though... still struggling to win deity consistently.

I also know there will be a few instances of very busy weeks during the next four months where I may be largely unavailable. Maybe not, though, we all need breaks from work, :mischief:

OK, I am going to launch a new team: A'pos'tro'p'hes, with the intention of medaling.

If the two teams do not get enough members, we may merge back, to be discussed obviously. US has been a team with a long tradition, so it would be sad to see it go.

Please sign up for the team you prefer :)

OK, my team will have three goals:
  • Not have latest finish date
  • Not have latest final submission date
  • Beat A'pos'tro'p'hes

k signing in :)

will we keep the name of US to keep tradition?
Yes.
Although SteelHorse has the most seniority on the team, so whatever team he goes to has the right to the name. If kcd ever plays an SGOTM again, hopefully he will be rejoining US.

A lot of you haven't signed up yet!
