SGOTM8 - Cutlery

I suspect that everyone's game is so different now that changing our game based off of someone else's score/culture/whatever wouldn't work.
I think so too indeed.
For a more detailed summary, let's say the first 2 towns went pretty darn well, Sgt Killmaim has been promoted to leader of the Alpha squad. Lost a few archers but none we couldn't avoid, as far as I know. I'm now to the point where we'll head for horses at full throttle with a huge pack of motivated baddies :D

ooo ooo, how long til you post. I can't wait to see this one. :twitch:

A quick taste of the action:

SG08TACT1.jpg

Did we sign up Alex? If not, don't forget to check to see if we can get that city on the island in a peace deal.

Alex was signed up, as I believe was part of the plan. I personnally wouldn't have gone there all out without Alex's support, since we have a huge lot of archers but we barely have spears to cover them.

The deal was a good thing, from the little I know, since it has kept us free of any relevant offense: 1 horse 1 archer attacked our troops, and that's all there has been. I suspect we'd have had a stronger counter-attack if not from the likely fact their 2 armies crashed onto one another.

1st off, I apologize for this, but I forgot to gift republic away to china; it would have eased the trades a bit and could have made the war easier, but it's not been too tough as is, so it's just a consequenceless brainfart AFAIK.

Spoiler Turn Log :

Pre-Turns: We HAVE the gold to build an embassy, IP. It's just not yet mined from our natural ressources that handily call themselves "greeks."
WST is not on regular factory schedule, it is late by 1 metric ton of food in the bin. It will produce an archer and become an idiot friendly 4- turn factory at sizes 5-6, with more gold income from more pop.

T 0. We get all gold, HBR, MM and both WM, Embassy, MA for a net cost of math + lit and a benefit of 35g.
The alliance against Mao costs us literature, however, we've gained some gold overall, though.

The military advisors picks up his scout channel talkie.
"Alpha 2, this is the Pentagon. You are all alone. Radio silence effective now."
"*silently acknowledges the radio silence, through radio silence*"
"All hands over main channel, Defcon 1 has been ringed. Killmaim and Alpha 5 will lead the assaults. Expect no help from the greeks, their philosophers are still trying to figure out an ashtray. And we thought we had idiots around."
"All units in position."

2 archers produced, more queued

IT: I missed something moving near that top chinese target city.

T 1.
"Killmaim reporting, we've dispersed survivors at Hangchow, they'll join the work force."
"Alpha 3 reporting, Alpha 5 and 6 died in the battle, chinese archers still stand. Our men are injured, but the 4th batallion will fight another day."

2 archers produced, more queued

T 2.
"Alpha 3 reporting, Alpha 4 secured the BG position. Chinese galley sunk. Hostiles coming onto Alpha 2."

1 archer produced, more queued
Jungle Wood Ustencils founded, working on barracks (won't finish and should be discussed - whether or not to turn jungle towns into worker pumps)

T 3.
"Hostiles in sight, radio silence broken. Alpha 2 descending onto the grass to pick a fight."
Meanwhile, workers get out of the academy. They are young, innocent, but mostly idiot.
"Looks like our men are taking a liking to this archery thing, general. Alpha 2 out with but a few wounded men."

T 4.
"Charlie leader reporting, we're hiking into the forest."
"Bravo leader reporting, confirming operation 'walk in the park' commenced here too. Hostiles seen and noted protecting workers."

1 cat 1 archer out, more queued.
Up research on construction, we've got some more spare lately.
Chicago cutlery changed to spearmen, as we could use some of those to clean counter-attacks.
Colored cutlery founded on a harbor.

SG08TACT1.jpg

T 5 & 6.
Operation walk in the park goes well, forces are focusing on Canton. The victory at canton must be simple, rapid and decisive.

IT: "Pentagon, this is Charlie 1 CO Jack McManus, Broken arrow, I repeat, our position is doomed, send no more men here."

T 7.
Move everyone to Canton, regroup scout forces. They have a recent road network in the jungle and Charlie 1 learned it the hard way.

T 8.
SG08MOM.jpg

T 9.
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhh..."
"All units respond, what was this."
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhh..."
"This is general Wolfe, answer !"
"Admiral K. reporting from the road crew sir, we've found a talkie and an empty pack of cigs, probably left from Alpha 1 here onto the hill"
"Whatever, Admiral, just tell me what damn thing has happened in Canton !"
"We are many days' walk from there, but we can tell Slaves are being carried back into the jungle to start the northern part of the road, sir."
"Good news, Wolfe out."

SG08HJ.jpg

"Delta 1 reporting sir, from far sight, it looks like 2 units were lost, 3 slave units brought back. Delta standing by for orders"
"Delta, fortify the horse breeders' area. Wolfe out."

T 10.
"Squad re-assignation: Team at HJ to be called Alpha and led by Killmaim. Hold until reinforcements arrive then go for the pyramids."
"Killmaim here, got it."
"Echo squad reinforce Alpha position, All other hands to be led by Delta 1 onto the W coast."
"Got it General."
"Don't blow it, we need those damned white things. Conscript some of those men to defend the place, Killmaim. Wolfe out."

Sorry for the MSN popup in the embassy screen; they have got it in 45 turns: a lot of turns.
For the record, Japs have TGW, so nothing to worry about today.

I say we rush spearmen in HJ for a bit of defense, and maybe repeat the process if we can get gold from Alex - we need cover fast and the new one is not coming along swiftly. I'd stop any archers production as those units will become obsolete by horsemen anyways.
We'll need a handy lot of horses and cats to march onto Alex for iron, so we better keep building offensive units. We'll need several defensive units as well; it's all I've been doing lately. The greeks are probably mighty close to having iron connected, and they have horses. We need to not wait until chivalry to take 'em out. Killmaim agrees.
Unit support is terrible (45/15, 60gpt), but once we found a couple more towns and let our old ones grow to 7, it should be much better.
We still need that settler factory in WST, and it can work the lake all 4 turns for a lot of gold. just arrange it so it keeps its 6-6-(2)-8-8 minimal rate and it's a charm.

Both of them have oversea towns, 2 confirmed from China, one from Greece.

Settler pair spotted by Delta 7, although they haven't had time to report it over the talkies. There's a lot of interference in that part of the jungle, see turn 9.
Here is a quick scheme of what I look upon as being a decent agenda, though it should (it will anyways) be discussed before MM's turns.

~~~~~~The Save~~~~~~
Worth the wait!!! Great job BEF! I knew that blood lust would come in handy ;)
Alex will probably back out of the Alliance during the next turnset. But if we can get Beijing before that happens that would be awesome. After Alex signs peace, we need to check to see if he'll give us those overseas cities for peace. After looking at the whole map, both external Chinese cities are pop 2. It'll be hard to get both. I'd rather have Tatung and get Tientsin next go round if we have a choice.
It doesn't look as though Alex has made any progress. That's good. I wonder how much fighting there has been.
Idiot Color (2 tiles away from Pharsalos) needs some culture. That way Pharsalos will only have coast tiles to work. It also has 0.6 - 1.1% chance of flipping to the Greeks.
Jus to get it on the current page
Roster check:
eldar
Tubby Rower
soul_warrior - did pre-war check
Beorn - wiping the blood off of his axe
Good morning all.
Helpful, and probably needless reminder....
I have gotten out of the habit of using utilities to check for unhappiness and I'm regularly bit in the butt because of it.
For games that matter, that is where I have to confess my sins to others, I'm now using a utility to check for unhappiness at the end of every turn. If I MM a city for production or food after the fact I check again because I may have tipped the chashflow balance enough that the entertainment slider is just not sufficient.
It's a very minor thing but in the end the top team seem to be separated by a handful of turns. Each turn I blow production due to rioting, which I have done in this game, is an unnecessary waste.
If note does nothing but serve to keep me accountable for not replicating this error then it was not in vain.
Should we be building the GL? That way we won't get too far behind in techs? WFCity could do it in 65 turns. It could get one more shield when it grows to 6 in 7 more turns. if that extra shield doesn't go to waste then it'll cut it back to 57 turns. If no one else is building it, I think that it is worth the risk. If it doesn't work then we could just switch to a Forbidden Palace.
Oh, Killmaim hasn't generated a leader correct? I mis-read your initial post about the promotion and thought that we had a leader.
If a leader is generated, do we make an army or do we save it for a Beijing FP rush?
In C3C I have found that the FP location has had little affect on corruption the "second core". IIRC the FP pretty much just ups the Optimum Number of Cities. If these things are correct then just build it where it can be done fast.
OTH, Communism with the Secret Police station has just a stupid low level of corruption. Just my observations.
I believe that the FP will reduce corruption in that city as well. The 2nd core is gone in [c3c]
Regarding the GL... We want Advanced Flight yesterday...
In possession of the GL we can research deeper into lines that the AI might not go for (I'm absolutely no, zero, nil, nada, expert on this). Or we could use our finances to get the techs spread around to increase the pace.
With the GL in the possession of a research buddy we could use the power of our research continent to push the tech pace financially.
Is there another wonder that might be of greater value? Let's try and plan these out very far in advance taking maximum advantage of long-sighted pre-builds.
BTW since China's Scientific (I think) we need to keep one Chinese city around to gift into each age for the free tech. How about the Geeks (Commercial/Philosophical? :) )
Actually, you make a good point and I despise you for it. :) We could have a very productive city, albeit one, that would have been otherwise a near waste.
Well, if we get a GL I think it's worth a team vote before one of us just zaps the poor soul into an Army.
Also, there is certainly zero chance of transporting that army off our landmass. Then again, I'll check the notes on transportable units. Well, a leader can be shuttled over the pond. Unless we have a dire need of an army to take on Alex then the best use of these GL's would be to rush big stuff.
The FP has a small 2nd core effect - nothing to compare to PTW, but it really does do something. I'd be for a FP in Beijing, making it easier to maintain a cultural balance there. That city had crazy culture though, so I would wait a little before building it.
As for TGL, I'd start a FP build somewhere and change it to TGL if we can leader-rush the FP farther along the road in current China.
The amount of fighting was rather low, I suspect the hoplites ate quite a few chinese horses and archers. Notice however that Greece has horses, and iron soon, so we might want to be more prepared.
Right now we have near-0 culture and we need a few defenders, but I'd give ourselves a good 10-15 turns of building libs and markets over the next 2.5 turnsets. We can really use the extra research.
Chinese are IND & MIL
Greece is SCI & COM
As for the Grecian war, we are going to need lots of Cats. Take away their horses quick, then go after the iron. If we see Greek knights before we have iron then that will spell doom for us and we must live with them in peace until longbows & gunpowder.
During MM's turns I'd focus on Beijing and hope that Alex has hurt Mao pretty bad in his capital. Then sue for peace to get the towns overseas after our alliance is up in 10 turns (or when Alex decides to stop).
MGL = FP in Beijing.
Agree we need more infra, especially libs.
TGL? useful but not critical.
LEOs would be of much higher value to me. (building spears today so we can pay out MechInfs on tuesday.)
I wouldn't worry about Leo. The map is small, the opponents are limited in numbers, our land will be large. There is no way we will fall back to be at-par with the emperor AI past the chivalry/gunpowder times, so my bet is that we'll simply have every infra and wonder we want for ourselves then - like Bach's, Smith's and Hoover.
By then spending a few coins on troops won't be a problem. Heck, we might even have it captured already when we reach the modern age. Who knows what Alex's reaction will be when we declare war on him: "Hey ! we need more soldiers. Counselor, order our men to build the largest and most expensive wonder available so that we leave the country open."
@ BeF - :salute: :band:
My $.02 for the FP is to put it somewhere where it will have an obscene amount of shield production in the Ind. Age.
Can someone please post a mini-map?
