BTW, I pre-ordered Civ 4 today.
Ordered mine this afternoon! Hope it runs on my system or I'll be building another!:lol: :lol: :lol:

Hmm - a couple of thoughts here -

- if we have no engagements with a civ, we get no WW, right? WW is my main concern with being at war with both Rome and Japan.

- We complete Smith's in 5 turns, IIRC, so I'd wait until we complete it to trade Economics; we can make $ to buy troops in the meantime (or something.

- Someone mentioned something about saving workers for building RR, but I don't think that necessary under our current plan. even if we decide we need to research more, we'll be able to build replacement workers quickly on the home island.

- once we start really taking down England, we need to make sure we get Lizzy's off-shore holdings before the capital jumps to one of them.

I'll let y'all know if I think of anything else.

I was kinda waiting so we could nail whether we ally with Japan against Rome or the other way around :lol:

We have 6 knights, 2 horses, a pike and a spear on the island we share with Rome. We share no land with Japan. So we could declare on either of them, but I think it will be easier to get an alliance with Rome.

Don't make the declarations until we are ready to trade away economics and there is no need to selfresearch until we make the trade. We don't want to wait too long to trade economics or we stand the chance of someone else learning it.

We could put a serious hurting on the Vikings with just knights, since they are still in the AA. There appears to be no resources or luxes in VIK lands that we need so there is no reason to battle them now. We need to start focusing on Rome & Japan before they get too far ahead in techs.

Except that they get Berzerkers with invention - so we need to watch out for that. But, yes, we don't need to take them out immediately. Though if we have gold to spare and our town there doesn't flip, we may want to use the gold to get some military there.

I think that we have to take some risks. Perhaps we should take 4 or 5 turns and use the time to build what forces we can. Our focus should be Tientsin but we can also do some in England and at least a couple in Viking territory, in case of a flip. Then, when there is one turn remaining in Smith's, trade Economics, if we still can, and ally with Rome against Japan. Then stab Rome in the back and take what we can around Tientsin. We can't afford to lose many of those cities from flips either.:crazyeye:

Can we wait for 4 turns? I wish I knew?:crazyeye:

I agree that the Vikings are a side show for now. However, we can not afford to lose that city without the means to take it back. I think we need to try and press some in all areas while maintaing the main pressure on Rome! Looking at the map, our best chance to get a city may be from Rome?:crazyeye:

Sorry, I'm feeling crazy eyed this evening, for some unknown reason?:blush: :mischief: :crazyeye:

Edit - If someone gets Economics, we should immediately make the trade for Chemistry and take our chances, imho. Getting to Military Tradition is more important than Smith's, imho? I think?

EDIT2 - Alan reported that the GOTM server is back up and running as normal.

Good luck! I'm really curious what will have been going on! :dance:

All signs show: More WAR!

Progress so far:

Turn 0 – 750 AD Looking good :thumbsup:
Rushed horses in Macao, Oakland and Tientsin. Decided to rush in Brighton as well (another horse). Some MM'ing of course, but mostly for personal preferences.

IBT: Forgot about the silks deal... :( It didn't show up on civassist either cause it already had expired. There's nothing for it, I renew the silks deal with Japan for dyes, wines, gems and 280 gold.
Then this happens:
Sgotm_8_XTeam_750_AD_Japan_declares.JPG

:lol: Ok, mind if we join in?

Tampa Worker --> Wealth
Norrk Horse --> Horse
Tientsin Horse --> Horse
Macao Horse --> Horse
Brighton Horse --> Horse
Detroit Worker --> Wealth
Oakland Horse --> Horse

Turn 1 – 760 AD Springfield founded. Decide to push against London instead of doing all the smaller towns. Assault will commence in 4-5 turns.
The Romans are in anarchy. I'll upgrade asap and then declare (nothing to gain from MA with Japan, is there?)

IBT: 4/4 Knight retreats without damaging a 4/4 longbow in England.
Atlanta Bank --> Wealth MM most tiles to coast.
San Fran Bank --> Wealth
Miami Worker --> Wealth
Denver Duct --> Wealth
Orlando Horse --> Settler

Turn 2 - 770 AD Upgrade 5 horses to knights on Tientsin island. Upgrade 1 horse in Norrk. Hurry horse in Oakland, Tientsin, Macao and Norrk.

IBT: 4/4 knight --> 2/4 against English longbow outside London.
Norrk. Horse --> Horse
Tientsin Horse --> Horse
Macao Horse --> Horse
Oakland Horse --> Horse
Cincinatti Temple??? --> Bank
Portland Worker --> Wealth

Turn 3 – 780 AD Vikings have finally entered the MA. Upgrade newly bought horses. Kill a vet Eng longbow outside Newcastle. Move forces on Tientsin island to prepare onslaught against Brundisium. Rush horse in Brighton.
Declare on Vikings:
Bjoergvin: 4/4 knight retreats against 4/4 sword, taking 2 hps.
4/4 knight wins against 3/3 spear, promotes to 2/5
4/4 knight wins against 3/3 spear, promotes to 2/5
4/4 knight wins against 3/3 spear, looses 1 hp.

IBT: Pharsalos and Norrk riots.
St.Louis Duct --> Harbour
Brighton Horse --> Horse
Santa Fe Worker --> Wealth

Turn 4 – 790 AD Get Chemistry and 85 gold from Japan for Economics. Get Metallurgy from Rome for Economics and 543 gold. Make peace with England for Economics, receive Astronomy and 12 gold. Everyone has all optional techs, Rome and Japan are in Democracy!!!
Bjoergvin: 4/4 --> 2/4 knight defeats the now healed 4/4 sword.
3/4 --> 2/4 knight defeats 4/4 archer and razes Bjoergvin.
Upgrade horse in Brighton to Knight.
Declare on Rome:
Brundisium: 4/4 Knight --> 1/4 against 3/3 spear, Capture Brundisium Must say I had expected more resistance. Maybe the amassment of forces on this island is a bit of an overkill? Switch builds on the island to Wealth.
Position forces for assault on Syracuse.

IBT: Loose 2 healing knights that I had to leave in Viking territory to 4/4 swords. Take out one sword in the process.

And, as I suspected:
Sgotm_8_XTeam_790_AD_Golden_age.JPG

:rockon:
Beijing Smith's --> Bank
Corinth Courthouse --> Duct
Tatung Settler --> Wealth
Cleveland Courthouse --> Harbour

Income before any MM'ing due to GA: +940 gpt :)

Edit: More to follow Will try to finish this evening, but turns are rather slow.

:woohoo:
Looking good, Capt! :thumbsup:
capturing cities, getting a GA - beautiful! :clap:

How did we (well, I, at least :blush: ) forget about the GA? :crazyeye: :lol:

Thought about the Vikings - can we get a knight per turn with our one city for not too outrageous a price by buying a worker at max price, then switching to knight or horse (whichever we have at the moment) and completing every turn? Or maybe we want to rush a settler or risk keeping a town there to more quickly build up our forces for quicker destruction there.

I had forgot about that, thanks :goodjob:
I 'll keep a city or rush a settler once I get things a little more under control. First priority was to take some of the flip pressure away from Norrkoping.

:woohoo: Japan declaring on Rome was heaven sent!:jesus: I think you're right to not ally with Japan as that leaves us free to negotiate with Rome whenever we want, not that we have a sterling rep anyway!:rolleyes:

I take your peace with England is temporary, to relieve some war weariness?:)

Glad to hear the resistance appears to be light versus the Romans. The Vikings seem to be putting up a good fight though!:viking: :mischief:

Keep up the good work and I look forward to reading more!!:goodjob: :banana: :rockon:

EDIT - Crossed with you Capt. And Willow's idea is a good one!!

Peace with England is indeed very temporary.
In fact, I'll just regroup and heal some troops be4 declaring again, 3-4 turns. I did it partly because we had the chance to mix economics into the deal and get astronomy from ENG. That way we got to know whether any1 had physics yet.

I missed in the turn log that you picked up astronomy. :blush: Nice work! :goodjob:

As Civ4 approaches, I can still remember trying this game fo rthe first time with a strategy of peaceful co-existance and building big cities. And how I used to get trounced!! :crazyeye: Now, you make peace for a good reason and I question it!! :cringe: :nono: [pimp]

:banana: Keep up the great work!! :banana:

Definitely a good idea to reduce flip chance - no arguments there. Just trying to think about how to expedite our complete elimination of flip chance to Vikings. ;)
