SGOTM8 - Xteam

@Bluebox - If you are still on, CivAssist 2 says there are 4 enemy units in our territory but I can't find them. Any ideas of where they are?

Edit - Never mind, I found them near Edo! They are in a Jungle and the green of Japan provided them a great deal of Camouflage!!

I'm still on. I can check too and post in a minute - we'll get that spam award .... :)

great crossposting jamboree here  ok, you found them, great. seems like they are wearing camouflage , just perfect for that jungle tile. :)

just a small note: a new town 2S of Edo (right in the corner of the JPNese territory would allow us to reach and attack Osaka within the same turn. we wouldn't need to park a stack in JPN territory.

Ok, I'll get to that as soon as I can keep a rifle or two in Edo to secure it. They're trying to gang up there now!!

Good News, propaganda makes Orebro flip and I destroyed New Chicago, wiping out the Vikings!! :salute:  :woohoo:

EDIT - In the same turn (1605 AD), I tried to use propaganda on Japan. I got the message that the Japanese are immuned to propaganda. Oooppps!!

Oh, Good, a Triple Post!!

There is a stack of Cannons near New Los Angeles (near Lugdunum) which could be upgraded to Artillery and used to bombard Roman ships and some cities close to the coast.

There are now sufficient Cavs in Victory for an attack within the next turn or two on Osaka. It would also be nice to get rid of Fukushima. You may want to keep towns temporarily to use as “corridors” to get to Japanese cities in a turn, rather than 2 or three. We are currently about 150 tiles under the domination limit (1340 owned and the limit is 1491). War Weariness is creeping in, so keep your eyes on it.

Syracuse’s border just expanded, so you will be asked to move the Cavs there unless we make a ROP with rome. They will do it straight up and perhaps we should so we can set up and ROP rape to finish them off quicker?

We have refining due in 3 turns, are making 994 GPT and have 2541 Gold in the treasury. Our Firaxis score is 4731.

And did I mention that Rome has Infantry and that both Rome and Japan are no longer affected by propaganda?

Good luck Bluebox. Unless you pass it on to Willow on Wednesday?

Well done, leif.
We should be able to pick up Jerusalm if we make peace quickly, shouldn't we?
Iirc, that's the only offshore settlement the Romans have.

Thanks Capt. :)

Do you wish to take another crack at this one? I'm trying to figure out who would like to step up so that everyone that wishes to gets a shot at playing. Although we are still a ways from the end.

We are currently at peace with Rome but that may change very quickly unless we sign an ROP with Rome. Then, when we get our force level up enough to go after Rome, we can, hopefully, get Jerusalem in a deal. :mischief:

Roster:
Bluebox said he had time today or Tuesday and Willow has time on Wednesday, so I suggest that Bluebox take the next 10 and then Willow can follow. If Capt has time Thursday, that would be great. And, perhaps, Gator may have some post-conference time to finish this weekend if needed. If anyone runs into a snag, post and I can try to pick up any slack.

If you can and wish to slide in somewhere, please post and I'll change things to try to accomodate. Let's try to wrap this up if we can. Thanks...

Great job, Leif! Actually I have the opprtunity to pick the game up immediately and take an hour off-duty to play right now.

Some comments on your wonderful turnset: The reason propaganda isn't possible anymore is that propaganda is meant not to work against Democracies. Of course it's wonderful news to hear that Orebro finally flipped. Thinking of how Alan recently summarized the scope of this SGOTM here in this thread, one can say we are definitely using off-beat strategies, too. I think propaganda is as an equally unexplored means as helicopters, at least when it comes to terms of S/G/COTM. So we're innovative in this regard. :)

When the message popped up that stated that we have learned SciMeth. you could have gone via the "Big Picture" button to the F1 screen, open the Beijing city screen, switch prebuild to TOE, and get TOE in the same interturn, allowing you to get three techs (one researched, 2 free ones) in one turn. This should be perfectly compliant to S/GOTM rules. I don't believe the extra turn does matter in our current situation. I just wanted to explain the top notch approach that could be helpful in other situations when a turn less may do count.

Your decision to switch to Infantry and Artillery immediately appears to pay off. :goodjob: Backside of the whole TOE action (which was in part introduced by me) seems to be repParts became cheaper so Rome got it quick. But Rome would have got it anyway in a few turns as they must have been researching it already. Moreover, the AI is fortunately incapable to use arty effectively. AI atry will make nice units to capture. :D

Exactly! :D

Now that you've rushed some workers that's truely a practical option. :) There is the saying, a city never flips in the first turn.

Leif said:
Found the town of Victory
well-chosen name  :D

Kagoshima + Toyama appear to be the most possible settlements to get. We need Kagoshima in any case. Toyama seems to be the cheapest settlement of the "three City Island".

What are your thoughts about research, Leif? Getting to Tanks?

I'd like to urge us to do a ROP with Rome immediately because of this setup around Syracuse. We'd be forced to declare when Rome wants to force us to get our troops out.

syracuse.gif

Good morning Bluebox. :wavey:

Thanks for the tip on using the inter-turn more effectively. I know about it but always seem to forget in the heat of the moment.

If you can grab it, please do so.

I agree on the ROP as we are not ready to face Rome yet with our three cities "in the middle".

I think the immediate needs are the Rome ROP, a move to the south with Cavs against Japan to start razing their cities. As we can, I think it is appropriate to found some more cities of our own in the Japanese territory we are about to claim. I still think we'll need at least 6 cities to rush Cavs in to take on Rome. iirc, we are 150 tiles from domination, so we have some room to work with.

I think we should research at a moderate speed to tanks. I think well used artillery with Cavs can defeat Rome, although it will require a steady supply of fresh Cav units. It wouldn't hurt to build some Gold reserves to "push" a flurry of Cavs should we need them and, thus, a slower research speed. The only thing I'm concerned about with research is that Rome is largely intact and in Democracy, so they may get ahead of us. I'd hate to see tanks when we're ready to go after them!

Good luck, give Japan something to remember, well, at least as long as they survive. Please don't forget that island with 3 Japanese cities... :D

OK, so this is a "got it".

Capt, please indicate if and when you want to put hands on this. It's making fun again. :D

Why in the world was Rome allowed to found Syracuse!?! I left every space on the island covered with units so that no one could land on it!!! :(

I'd say let's get a ROP with Rome, keep attacking Japan until they are sufficiently weakened and give us an off-island foothold, try to bring in Rome against Japan to spend some of their forces, and then ROP-rape Rome once we have enough troops. :D

I should warn y'all that I'm signed up to give blood on Wednesday, so I'll be working on a pint less than usual (might have to replace it with a pint of another sort... :crazyeye: or maybe not :p). But in any event, I'll play Wednesday evening.

I thought about aligning Rome against Japan and that is probably a good idea. :goodjob: My worry was Roman units adjacent to our small number of cities and them ROP raping US! However, the benefit of expending their offensive capabilities is probably warranted.

When the captured city there was razed due to imminent flip probability, the wasn't enough units left. The Ai wouldn#t be the Ai if she would try to settle every last corner of the map.:P Personally I find Jerusalem much more annoying.

Don't know if it works now that we are at peace with JPN. You have to check when and how to arrange it. But I love that plan ...

I played some turns but weren't able to complete a full turnset as a friend called in and needed help.

Anyway.You might like this one:

Here's my turnlog:

Preflight: Sign a ROP with Rome to secure our stack stationed near Syracuse.

Shooting arty from Edo to lone JPN rifle (-1hp).

Oder Cannons near New LA to move to Kalmar for upgrading.

Sci down to 30%, due in three turns.

IBT: Edo produces Inf, rush Worker -> Cav; D-Day produces Inf, rush Worker -> Cav; Edo produces Inf, rush Worker -> Inf;

1655AD: Warwick is unhappy. I'm getting a confidential report that says Osaka is defended by 3 vRifles, 1 sRifle, and a cannon (see attachment). I attack:

Cav > vRifle: dies, rifle 4hp
Cav > vRifle: dies, Rifle promoted, 2hp
Cav > vRifle: dies, rifle 3hp
Cav > vRifle: dies, rifle promoted, 2hp
Cav > sRifle: wins, Cav promoted, 4hp
Cav > 2rifle: wins, Cav promoted, 2hp
Cav > 2rifle: wins, Osaka razed.

Arty > vRifle in Jungle: -2hp
Arty > vRifle in Jungle: failed

Arty > Longbow: -1hp
Cav > Longbow: wins, promoted

Cav > 1rifle: wins, promoted

pulling Cavs + worker stack to victory, defend lone Cav with Inf.

MM'ing cities to max gold. Started Stock Exchanges in high-shield cities Washington, Boston, Area51 Philadelphia.

IBT: 2 Samurai, 1 Rifle near Fukushima. A Rifle unloaded near Boston2.

1660AD: Upgraded captured Cannon to Arty in Victory. Railroads between Victory, Edo, and D-Day. Bombard Rifle and Samurai in Jungle tile next to Fukushima. Attack Them with cavs to conquer Fukush. next turn. I cannot get to Fukush. in one turn and Jungle gives a little defense. Fukushima would be nice to get. It's newly founded, doesn't have much culture and many citizens. I plan to keep it.

IBT: Refining reseached, Steel next due in 12 turns @ 30%. We can push it anytime.Forgot the rifle near Boston2 - Matzuyama captured. No increase in WW thuogh. Samurai captures JPN-railroad workers but cannot get them moved off our territory, so I will recapture them. 2 vRifle approach Victory and our Fukush. stack. Spokane and another city on former English continent produce settler.

1665AD: Bombard Fukush. from Victory: failed, citizens killed, failed. Bombard rifle S of Victory: -2hp; bombard Fukush. again: -2hp for defending vRifle, stays visible. Stack attack: vCav > 2hpRifle: wins, -2hp; vCav > 2hpRifle: dies, rifle -3hp; cav > 1hp rifle, wins, captures Fukushima. We have 2 very happy citizens there so I rush walls. Citzens become starving taxwomen. Elite unit loses vs. 2hp rifle on rubber, retreats. 2nd elite unit wins flawlessly. Cav captures Workers, moves to Fukushima. 3rd elite cav attacks Samurai, wins, -2hp.

Bombard rifle with last arty, loses 2hp. Rushing Inf, Arty, Cav. Founding Atlanta2. Recapturing Matzuyama with an eCav vs. rifle. Kagoshima is possible, Toyama close.

IBT: Pittsburgh produces harbor. Some harmless attack on Fukushima.

1670AD: Fukushima has a flip rate comparable to Edo (0.366) so I rush barracks there. Osaka has been rebuilt. I investigate Osaka. It's defended by a lone rifle, so I send a single Cav to destroy in a suiside mission. I want to create a larger stack for Satsuma. An elite stack dies against a rifle already down to 1hp. a vCav does the job flawlessly, Osaka autorazed, Cav can be pulled back.

Arty bombards rifle + Samurai SE of Fukushima: failed, -1hp, -1hp, -2hp (sam). Toyama is possible now, I will clean up and make peace.

Losing 1 Cav vs. 2hpRifle in jungle, sam killed by cav, rifle killed by cav. Killing another 2hpRifle retreating, redlined. Cav attacks Satsuma, retreats, eCav atacks Satsuma, vRifle redlined, Cav dies, Cav attacks rRifle, retreats, Cav dies, Cav retreats.

Making peace for Toyama + WM + 44g + 2gpt.

Toyama is completely American and has harbor as well as barracks! I rush our first Cav there. :)

Looking good, keep up the great work. Willow can't go until Wednesday, so if you can post the save by Tuesday evening, all will be fine. :goodjob:

I hope your friend is fine.:) Always nice to give someone a hand...

BTW - What instrument do you play and how is your band? :mischief:

I someone wants to take over, I just submitted. :)

Thanks, very kind of you, my friend is fine. It's nothing personal. He moved into another flat, but the flat wasn't finished in time and there are still worksmen around evry day trying to figure out how to make the rooms completely usable. So we had to carry some of his stuff form one place to another and such ... :)

Our band is a mixture of Coldplay and Sonic Youth, according to the press. :) In our local area we have a lot of Scandinavian metal and dark wave bands ...we're different, our singer is actually singing, you know  Maybe a kind of market niche here. :)

A friend of mine has released about 7 cds, mostly what is considered New Folk, think James Taylor and the Indigo Girls type of music.

BTW, I head to the conference tomorrow morning and I've been invited to the big Invitation only dinners on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Plus Thurday is the banquet dinner, so I may not be able to post until Friday.

Looks like yall are making good progress. I expect to see this won before I get back
