The only other thing I was thinking about is whether Rome is worth keeping as there are a number of Great Wonders in it, but I can't remember which ones?
Surely it may hurt a player to raze a city with a nice wonder or two :p but we're are a few turnsets from victory, and I don't see how any wonder can give us a signifant advantage. Thus, I wouldn't care about those wonder cities much.

After getting Jerusalem Rome has to dissappear ASAP. Please no settler-in-a-boat :mad:

If there's anything else I should be thinking of, let me know. (I won't play until this afternoon at the earliest.)
You could bombard Lugdumum from New LA and even Jerusalem (dunno if that makes any sense) from the E coast of the former English continent if you upgrade the cannons in Kalmar. :p

Good idea! Thanks. :)

If we can bombard Jerusalem, we can make sure that the city doesn't grow. That would make it easier to get the city in a peace deal, or cheaper to do propaganda on.

I thought of this as well but did not do it because I would have had to stop rushing units on the continent and divert the Gold to Cannon upgrades (80 Gold each). Lugdunum has 10 Artillery units trained on it now but those upgraded cannons would raze havoc on Jerusalem! :goodjob:

Good luck Willow... :D

By the way, in case anyomne hasn't noticed yet, the SGOTM09 threads are open for us to use. See you there... :) :p :mischief:

Well, if I have to see this again, something has gone terribly wrong.

Here's the turnlog:
preturn
upgrade one cannon in Kalmar (all I can afford)
check out troop positions
Japan has a settler – I bet they’re going after former Roman lands. Good. Then they won’t try to settle on another island.
barbs have settled on the rubber where Cumae was! :lol:

IBT
1 improvement destroyed, lose a 2hp cav near Lugdunum
3 cav, 1 art complete

1758
Japanese took out barb camp
bombard of Jerusalem fails
3 towns will be unhappy – fix

bombard of Lugdunum: c, 1hp, f, f, 1hp, f, 1hp, f, c, c (there are at least four vet infantry in there. Will wait for more artillery)

move another stack of artillery within range of Rome
bombard and take out militia that killed cav

buy 3 artillery and a 4th in Toyama, upgrade 3 in Kalmar

IBT
Tokugawa wants to renew our peace treaty. I agree.
another improvement bombarded
Wall Street complete. Yay! 50 more gpt
rushed units complete

1760
bombard of Lugdunum: 1hp, f, 1hp, f, 1hp, 1hp, f, f, f, 1 hp (there are five vet infantry in there!), f, f, f.
bombard Jerusalem: f, 2hp, only rifle is redlined. use 2 remaining artillery on Lugdunum: f, 1 hp.
upgrade 3 more cannon in Kalmar. new artillery moving toward Rome

rush 5 more artillery

bombard Rome: fail, barracks (yay!), library, f, c, f, coliseum, 2hp, f, 1hp, f, f, 1hp, uni, 1hp (reg inf now on top – there are 4 vet and at least 1 reg infantry)

bombard ironclad
upgrade 3 cannon on Tientsin Island (down to 7g :p)

IBT
Japanese stack attacks Rome, and takes out 2 infantry! (but promotes another)
no successful bombards
rushed artillery completes
oops – let Nicomedia riot

1762
Uh-oh! Osaka is founded on the rubber. Well, one way to take care of that is to pillage all the roads around it. a pain, but doable.

But Lugdunum first:
bombard: f, f, f, 1hp, 1hp, f, f, f, 2hp, 1hp, 1hp, f, f, f, f, 1hp, f. Okay, bringing in the cavs.
4/4 cav v. 3/4 inf => 2/4 inf
4/4 cav v. 3/4 inf => 1/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 3/4 inf => 3/4 inf, retreat

4/4 cav v. 2/2 inf => 3/5 cav :)
4/4 cav v. 2/3 inf => 3/4 inf
5/5*cav v. 3/4 inf => 2/5 cav
I’m out of cavs, but I think they’re down to two infantry.

On to Rome (with elite infantry on top!)
bombard: c, 1hp, 2hp, f, harbor, citizen, f, f, f, 1hp, f, f, f, c, 1hp

hmm – can’t isolate Osaka this turn. hopefully they won’t start more than a few infantry.
but I have a plan. :mischief: can’t implement until next turn…
rush cav in Toyama, 3 infantry

IBT
Romans almost took care of rubber problem: Osaka rifle down to 1 hp!
rushed builds complete

1764
WHAT!?!? In one turn, the Japanese acquired 20 infantry!!!! (must be conscripted. or upgraded? yes – upgraded. they have many less rifles) :mad:

back to Lugdunum:
bombard: 1hp, f, 1hp, 1hp, 1hp (3 vet infantry, 1 elite), 1hp, f, f, f, 1hp, f, f, f, 1hp, f, 2hp, f, 2hp. but I don’t have cavs there. Need to make more cavs. on to Rome

Bombard Rome: 2hp, 1hp, 1hp, f, 1hp, 1hp (4 vets, 1 elite inf), 1hp, f, f, f, c, f, 1hp, 1hp, f, f, f, 1hp,

4/4 cav v. 2/3 inf => 2/3 inf
4/4 cav v. 2/3 inf => 4/5 cav :)
5/5 cav v. 1/4 inf => 5/5 cav, and ROME IS OURS!!!!
I think we’ll raze it. Sistine doesn’t do us much good (how many cathedrals do we have?), and the lighthouse – well, why in the world would someone want one of those!?!?

Now I can get cavs to Lugdunum!!
4/4 cav v. 2/4 inf => 1/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 2/4 inf => 1/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/4 inf => 4/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/5 inf => 4/4 cav, and Lugdunum is ours!

Caesar still won’t talk. silly!
I had more cavs than I realized outside Rome. So I rush 4 artillery, 1 cav, 2 settlers (it saves a lot to not have to rush workers first, and we can squeeze in more towns without threatening domination)

pillage tiles south of Osaka to disconnect rubber from Japan

IBT
Yay! Japan wants to renew the ROP! :evil: (This game is thoroughly corrupting me!)
rushed units complete
resistance in Syracuse ends.

1766
everyone is unhappy! And raising the lux rate does almost nothing. And Rome won’t talk.
So I go through and fix it. Ughh! Some cities are starving. But hopefully Rome will make peace after the capture of Antium in 2 turns (knock on wood). We’re still making over 1500 gpt.

rush worker in Syracuse. In two more turns, will complete another and then can cover island.

I see no point in keeping Rome with its flip risk. Abandon it.
found New Orleans 2 and Baltimore 2

connect halves of the continent w/RR
move 26 artillery, 16 cav, and cav army into position outside Antium. It will fall next turn! Start moving other units into Japan.

no more rushes this turn; I’ll wait until towns acquire the first shield.
bombard Jerusalem
disconnect halves of the continent (disconnecting Osaka/rubber)

IBT
WLTPD ends all over the place. 2 cities riot (oops)

bombard Jerusalem, harbor destroyed

Battle for Antium:
bombard: f, f, f, f, f, 1hp, f, 1hp, f, f, 1hp (reg inf now shows), c, f, 1hp (back to 3/4 inf on top), 1 hp, 2 hp, c, f, f, barracks, 2 hp (rifle now on top), 1hp, 1hp, 1hp, 1hp (conscript rifle now on top)
4/4 cav v. 2/2 rifle => 3/3 rifle
4/4 cav v. 3/3 rifle => 2/4 rifle
4/4 cav v. 2/4 rifle => 1/4 rifle
4/4 cav v. 1/4 inf => 2/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/4 inf => 4/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/4 inf => 3/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/4 inf => 1/4 inf
4/4 cav v. 1/4 inf => 4/4 cav
5/5 cav v. 1/3 rifle => 4/5 cav
5/5 cav v. 1/4 rifle => 3/5 cav
And we’ve captured Sun Tzu’s!
(so that’s how they were healing their units completely every turn!)
We’ll keep it for now.

rush cav in Toyama
rebuild connecting RR, move injured cavs into D-Day
rush 6 cavs and 3 artillery
disconnect connecting RR
no need to abandon Syracuse – 3 units eliminates flip risk

IBT
not much

1770
more artillery and cavs into position outside Ravenna. Other moves into Japanese territory.
rebuild and pillage connecting road as needed.
Caesar will talk and give Jerusalem! But I’m in position to take Ravenna, so I’ll do that first.

IBT
Japanese cancel alliance against Romans.
Antium flips!!! (It was at 5-10%) and I had moved my cavs out of the way. Well, we’ll get it back.

1772
well, I have a chance to get Antium back now.
bombard Antium: 8 fails before 2hp. Okay, on to Ravenna
bombard Ravenna: f, 1hp, f, barracks, f, 1hp, f, f, 1hp (1 v inf, 2 reg), f, 2 hp, f, f
12/12 cav army v. 2/3 inf => 12/12 army
12/12 cav army v. 2/3 inf => 12/13 army
12/13 cav army v. 1/4 inf => 9/13 army
Ravenna is ours!
Bah! – that chokehold is a pain (occupied by Japanese), can’t get to Antium, except with one inf -

rush artillery in Toyama, 3 cav, 3 artillery, 2 inf on continent
move troops into position to take back Antium

IBT
rushed builds complete, all resistance ends

1774
Time to take back Antium
bombard: 1hp, c, f, f, f, f, c, 1hp
5/5 cav v 1/3 rifle => 5/5 cav, Antium captured
I don’t think it’s worth keeping. but let’s get peace and troops rearranged first
bombard ships next to Jerusalem
Rome’s army is down to 1 worker, 2 rifles, 8 infantry, and 5 strange objects

Make peace for WM, all 35g, sanitation, AND JERUSALEM!!
rush militia in Jerusalem

and our WW is gone – time to put everyone to work (tedious :rolleyes: )
and we’re up to 1839 gpt!

check on Japanese – infantry are showing in Ise and Hakodate. Yuck. I’ll rush more artillery in Toyama.

after moving troops about, abandon Ravenna and Antium (bye-bye Sun Tzu’s)

I have 32 artillery and 16 cavs in reach of Kyoto and Nagasaki; 14 artillery and and 15 cavs will be able to reach Osaka (rubber town) and Satsuma. Only 6 cavs and 5 artillery will be able to reach Ise and Hakodate.
Japan has 2 settlers, 16 riffles, 20 infantry, 2 artilley, 5 white and brown thingies, 1 samurai, and 12 militia

Hmm – we’re “down” to 1796 gpt. What did I change? :confused: Oh, well. That’s still a lot of gold.
rush a cav and a couple of artillery

IBT
WLTPD breaks out all over.

1776 (appropriate? :p)
time to attack Japan!
I give Tokugawa the bad news.
Kyoto dropped from 12 to 7 and Satsuma from 8 to 5 pop. Did this happen when I declared or last turn!?!? Well, they only have one more unit than recorded above.

Battle for Kyoto

4/4 cav v. 1/4 rifle => 4/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/3 sam => 2/4 sam

4/4 cav v. 3/3 rifle => 4/4 cav
4/4 cav v. 1/2 inf => 3/4 cav
City is ours! But it has this terribly ugly thing in it that must be destroyed. Abandon city.

Bombard Nagasaki (vet rifle on top): f, 2hp (3/3 rifle shows), 1hp, 1hp, f, 1hp
4/4 cav v. 1/3 rifle => 3/4 cav

Battle for Ise
bombard (4/4 inf on top): f, c, c, c (down to 1 pop) will make more artillery

rush 2 artillery, 2 cav
okay – the game is not registering my mouse. I think it’s time to pass it on

Here's the save

Several things for the next player (in no particular order) :
1. There's a Japanese settler out there somewhere.... :eek:
2. I didn't abandon Kyoto and Nagasaki to allow us to get troops closer next turn. But they should be abandoned next turn due to flip risk.
3. We are still over 50 tiles from domination, but there's no point in getting too close and risking a mistake.
4. We haven't suffered Japan's counterattack yet (since I just declared this turn). But they have no units with more than one movement. Note that they have units scattered all over the continent. :rolleyes:
5. Ise and Hakodate may be hard to capture, but we might get them in a peace deal if we keep bombarding them. I'd rush artillery in Toyama every turn for a while.
6. Some of our unit-buying towns don't have barracks. I've been using them for artillery. So keep an eye out.
7. Leave the infantry on the resources, pillaged. It's the only way to keep Rome or Japan from taking them by settling.
8. You might want to buy an artillery or two in Syracuse to bombard the water-crazed :crazyeye: Japanese.
9. I automated some workers on Old Viking Island, as there wasn't much left to do but RR. And a bunch on the main island are sentried.
10. Jerusalem could use a harbor.
11. It's very satisfying to see the troop numbers decrease on the F3 screen. :p

Good luck to whoever gets this! :)

Nice work Willow!! :goodjob: :goodjob: :banana: :rockon:

:evil: It is also nice to see that we have totally corrupted you now...:mischief: :p

Who would like to administer the Coup de Grace? Please post if you want it. If no one grabs it by tomorrow, then I'll offer it to Gator or, perhaps, find some time to finish it. :bounce: :thumbsup:

When do we start milking? :lol:

very :goodjob:, Willow!

Anyone started out on a final report? I could imagine myself throwing some game facts together. Would you agree upon a secret-service themed post à la "The real American solution (are not Chinooks but the CIA)!" ?

Just had a look at the save, now that I'm, sort of, awake. :crazyeye:

Looks like one more good turnset should about finish things. Any takers? :D

@Bluebox - Milking? :lol: :lol: :lol: How about finishing? :mischief:

So who's up? :mischief: :p

All you have to do is remember that infantry take a ton of artillery to wear down. cavs do okay once they're down to 2hp, and usually win at 1hp, but you really don't want to attack an infantry with 3 or more hp with cavs.

And don't forget about Ise and Hakodate.
Or the domination limit.
Or settlers.
Or... :) :lol: :D

The good news is that WE HAVE WON A CONQUEST VICTORY!!!!:band: [party] :beer: :bounce: :sleep:

The bad news is we completed it about 10 turn sets too late... :cry:

But we took the hard road and finished it without flight, not bad imho...

just in time to start SGOTM9 :lol:
Thank you for both the grats and the game. That was a great challenge and we made it a little more challenging. As I obviously haven't had time to check the other threads, are we the only team to complete this without Flight and Advanced Flight? :crazyeye:
