Summary: I rushed the ROP-rape on Rome, and didn't gain anything except resourse dis-connection from it. :( But we have a ROP with Japan and they're at war with Rome; once they spend themselves on each other, we can try it again. We now have enough troops we should be able to soon make major progress on Rome. Get that island town!!! :)

Preturn
not sure why we're building workers in our foothold - switch to cavs and rush. Note that we were right about resource on that tundra island.
Identify key Roman resources - rubber under Cumae and salt next to Veii.
I think it better to build up quickly and attack Rome rather than spending gold on research, so I lower research temporarily.

IBT
Roman settler moves to were we wanted to build. Well, we'll build nextdoor.
Cavs in Edo, Victory, and Toyama, barracks in Fukushima, settler in D-day.
Lots of people celebrate.

1675
Found Frontline one SW of where I intended to - hit wrong direction key, but couldn't wait or Rome would have build a town.
Rush a bunch of things (see IBT)

IBT
Beijing complete SE
Edo, Fukishima, Victory, and D-Day complete artillery
Frontline completes barracks

rush cavs in Toyama, D-Day, Fukushima, Frontline, and Victory
Edo starts settler

WAIT!? When did Kagoshima (SW of Atlanta) show up!?!? Well, I'm sure I've missed it in the turnlog somewhere. But that's one more island we need to get.

decide to establish ROP with Japan before breaking ours with Rome. Maybe Japan will join us against Rome when I attack in a few turns. And maybe we'll get to abuse that ROP too.

IBT
Washington completes SE

1690
rush settler in Edo
rush infantry in Victory, D-Day, and Frontline, cav in Fukushima

6 cavs next to Syracuse (yay! only a reg rifle!)
1 inf on the horses, 1 on the iron, 2 ready to take out cavs

I build the military academy in New Portland with Jackson, since there's really nothing else to do with him and we want a chance at more leaders.

hmm - I hope we're ready, because here goes....

Battle for Cumae
arty: 1 hp, 1hp, 1 citizen, f, uni dest., 2 hp (3/4 inf to top), cit, f

repeat 2 more times.
okay. need lots and lots more artillery

rush 4 arties
take out two more cavs, losing 1 in the process

well, I'm rather embarrassed at my under-estimate of what infantry require. I should have known better. Let's see if we can survive the IBT...

IBT
we get failed frigate bombard, defeat a cav, lose a cav and two lone inf, one to a cav army. several cavs enter our territory but don't attack. a few J troops head north.

hmm - not enough troops. I'll see what the Japanese do.

rush 3 cavs, 2 arties

Okay - I have played *much* longer than I should have. ;) Time to upload the save.

Here's the save

Leif, feel free to play tomorrow (well, today); if no one else wants it Wednesday, I can play a bit more.

Some tips for whoever plays:
1. Don't forget to buy more troops each turn!
2. Don't forget about Toyama - I've been rushing something every other turn (no need to spend the extra 80g there) so we have plenty of troops there when the time comes.
3. Having a spy to see all the troops is really nice
4. Don't give Japan any resources, or we'll have to contend with what they do with them.
5. I've turned off research, thinking tons of artillary, while tedious, will be quicker than getting to tanks, and we can buy an extra 1-2 units per turn with research off. But if the team wants to overrule, that's okay with me.
6. We can sqeeze in another town or two in our foothold if we want. It would reduce the need to spend teh 80g start cost when rushing troops. And less harm if/when one of them flips.

Hmm - now I need to get some sleep...

:woohoo::rockon: :dance: :worship:

Thrilling turnlog :coffee:. Your attack was surely a gamble but a brave one. Good to see you made some key decisions. Good you played such a long turn set. The MA with JPN might have 2 positive outcomes: They are helping us vs. the Romans before we can backstab them.

It's perfect you attacked Rome - they would have been getting even stronger. :goodjob:

We weren't *building* workers - I just rushed the initial 10s. :D

Thought that might be the case. ;)

Go, Leif! :D

And if anyone else wants to play Wednesday instead of me, that's fine - I don't want to hog that game. But I won't be able to play again after tomorrow until Sunday or Monday.

Edit: on a completely different topic, I wonder if we'll end up needing a special dispensation to go over the 1000 post limit on this thread... :hmm: Go spam!

Nice work Willow. :goodjob: :goodjob:

Those darn Infantry sure can be stubborn but we have to go and get them sometime. The key issue will be our ability to replacing our losses.

Should we get a leader, do we build an army to protect our artillery or jump the palace? :mischief: :D

I will try to knock out some turns today, unless someone else can grab it for a few. If you wish to continue the struggle, please post the times you are available to play so we can get the game turned around for the next player.

Right now I know I can do some today and Willow on Wednesday. Gator is out until the weekend, playing golf and eating fancy foods with the

Capt. or Bluebox, any more time this week? :mischief:

No problem!! We went way over 1000 in SGOTM07, iirc.

And a nice double post too!! :p

I may have time Thursday.
Until that I won't even have time to play the COTM, on which I'm off to a terrific start, so I really want to finish what might be my first deity win apart from tiny maps...

If you have time, that would be great. If not, that's OK too. I don't want to deny anyone the glory of kicking the hell out of the Romans and Japanese. :p

Good luck with your COTM game. I haven't started yet and am not sure I'll get to it this month.

Oh, two more thing that could be relevant to the next player: (assuming some, like Leif, gets to play before I do again tomorrow)
- the wounded cavs in Victory only got there this turn, so they need another turn to heal (they were north of Byzantium and I didn't immediately have cover for them)
- Normandy doesn't have a barracks, so only use it for artillery. I figured we'd want lots of that anyway, so didn't need to buy a barracks in every town.

Hmm - couple more thoughts. (Can't figure out if I'm thinking too much about this game - or if I should think more and get all these thoughts out at once. :crazyeye: )
- Once Syracuse is out of resistance, we may want to rush just enough units (could be cheap ones) to cover the island and abandon the city. As long as marines don't arrive, there would be no way for anyone else to land. :D
- I didn't go through towns to MM for taxpayers and gold. It might be a good thing to do in the next few turns. If someone has time. :p

Played some and the good news is that Rome is finally on the run. They are down to 8 cities and still are not talking, although we are threatening Rome. :D

Kagoshima flipped to us, so that is one island city that is ours. Jerusalem is still out there however.

The bad news is that it is a slog against Infantry, thank God for Artillery!!

<< THE SAVE >>

The turn log follows:

Turn 333 – 1715 AD Pre-flight
Go through cities and check for gold production and there aren’t very many adjustments to make. Things are pretty tight and when I tried to make an adjustment, it effected so many other things that it is nearly futile! I made 2 or 3adjustments and added only 1 Gold gain.
You did a good job of wearing down Rome as they have only 3 Cavs and 48 Infantry. That is going to be a tough number to reduce.
Ok, so I press enter to start us on our way!

IBT
The Japanese come knocking on the door and want to trade World Maps. I trade them our World map for theirs plus 13 Gold.

With Artillery stack north of Byzantium, bombard Cumae; f, -1 Pop, doesn’t say, f, f, doesn’t say, f, doesn’t say (I am not observing Cumae, so I must have hit something but I don’t know what it is).

With Artillery stack near Veii; f, f, f, destroy Marketplace, destroy Library.

4/4 Cav dies against a redlined Roman Infantry, who promotes to Elite?
4/4 Cav dies against the 2/5 Inf, now 1/5.

Getting concerned about Syracuse and Fukushima flipping as their percentages are almost 5% each.

Just remembered the stack of Cannons we had in old England. Found them in Kalmar but it costs 80 Gold each to upgrade to Artillery. Thought I might bombard Lugdunum but that cost is excessive.

IBT

We suffer 2 bombardment attacks by Roman naval units with no losses.

Next turn our Peace Treaty with Japan expires.
Set Lux slider to 0%.

After Action Report.
Several Roman cities no longer exist. An soon, none will exist. There is a Roman Nilitia near our healing stack on the salt where Veii used to be but the Japanese have been killing them pretty effectively. I have been taking roman cities before the Japanese can get to them. The Japanese have a pretty good stack headed for Rome. You should be set up to take Rome in 2 turns but may want to consider slowing yourself down a little to allow the Japanese stack to waste themselves on the defenses of Rome? :hmm:

Our Army now consists of 124 Cavs, 32 Cannon and 32 Artillery. The Roman Army is 28 Infantry, a small navy and not much else. Japan’s Army consists of 35 rifles and 14 Militias.

Rome is, somehow, still in Democracy while Japan has shifted to Communism. Rome has 8 cities remaining and Japan has 10. Jerusalem is now the only island city we can not reach. I am hoping Rome will change governments so we can try some propaganda again.

War weariness is a factor and I was just able to change the lux slider down this last turn. I’m not sure why but it spiked a couple of turns ago and required a lux slider shift to keep things in order. Need to keep an eye on it.

I rushed some Libraries near Jerusalem in the hopes that it might flip as Kagoshima did. Probably a waste but why not try?

Our Firaxis score is 5338.

Good luck Willow, I hope you can make the Romans history!! :mischief:

Thanks. Take care of yourself! :cringe:

Drink plenty of fluids, take your aspirin and get into bed like a good ...... Oooppps, I'm not your mother?

Got it!

Great job, Leif! :goodjob: We're making progress!

I'll play some today - no guarantee of how much.

Now that they don't have rubber (it was under Cumae), they can't make more infantry.

And the culture flip! Remember SGOTM6 when we had many times the culture of everyone and we got, what, one flip? the Japanese have more than us!

I'll plan to keep taking out Rome at least until they are willing to give us Jerusalem for peace (there'd better not be uranium on that island!), and then until either WW or peace between Rome and Kyoto or too few Roman towns forces me to make peace. Then the Japanese will get it!

If there's anything else I should be thinking of, let me know. (I won't play until this afternoon at the earliest.)

The only other thing I was thinking about is whether Rome is worth keeping as there are a number of Great Wonders in it, but I can't remember which ones? If they provide us some worthwhile benefits, perhaps we should consider it. :hmm:

It will be a PITA until we can finish the Romans... :p

Good luck and happy hunting. :mischief:
