SGOTM8 - Xteam

double post, sorry.

in turn 26 the c.warrior moved onto the roaded tile and was going to pillage next turn. The following turn I decided not to pillage as it felt exploitive, as far as the puppet strings issue goes. Is this kind of action dissallowed in GoTM rules? I understand anything that feels exploitive is discouraged even if it is not already stated. What do you guys think? (or admins if you are reading)

:goodjob: nemesis. I think trading for Alpha was the correct thing to do and I think I'd done that in a single game. WC is useless without close enemies and we're bound to be able to trade for it with philosophy for instance.

I don't know what the rules are, but I wouldn't feel it's exploitive.

You think there's any chance we could get a city up to claim one of the horses, possibly in a little culture war?

I can't see anything wrong with pillaging roads in no mans land. You are making choices with trade-offs, whereas a real exploit generally creates advantages way in excess of the cost.

In this case, you use up warrior turns to do it, and you slow down your own movement later when you come that way again. Puppet strings would imply you were going to do it over and over again, which means you tie down a warrior to hold up an AI worker instead of letting him explore and pop huts.

@nemesis  Great trading s.. erhh ... turn set: :D A small note:

When reaching a border tile without units in sight you can use [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[D] to force the diplomacy dialog.

Guessing trade polices of AI:
I don't believe the "3rd neighbor theory". China started with Masonry and WC and probably started research of BW. Greece started with ABC and BW and possibly started to research WC. That made it easy for them to trade WC and BW a few turns later. Moreover, they could trade MSY and ABC and China lost her gold in one of the deals.

Both managed to get Pottery, but only China got Wheel. PTY could be a result of self-research, WHL was possibly popped from a hut by China.

If there is a 3rd neighbor near, it's not Japan, because CB isn't available and it's the cheapest starting tech so trading it would be easy for the AI. Regarding the knowledge of PTY, it could only be England or the Vikings. But I'd rather think there are 2 neighbors.

Very nice work Nemesis!! :goodjob: :goodjob:

Trading for Alphabet was definately the thing to do! :goodjob: Now if we can accumulate some gold and get some expansion going, we should be in good shape.

I think Alan's post on pillaging the road covers the subject well. :thanx:

I haven't had time to look at the save yet but will in a few hours.

Roster:
Gator - UP
Bluebox - On Deck
Leif
Willow
- Relaxing somewhere nice and quiet? ;)
The Capt.
Nemesis - recovering

It looks good thus far, let's get some cities built. Good luck Gator!!

The  is for Alphabet! I guess I'm going ot have to watch how many of which smilies I'm using from now on. Don't want any inflation, one can only use 10 in a post you know! And anyway, what do I know??

Looking at the save, Warrior Code is nearly available for purchase. However, I think we should save up some and see when China obtains Iron Working and target it, hoping we have iron close by in one of those hills or mountains that are all around us. Then we'll know whether we need to head for those horses with a settler or can war with Swordies.

If we can get Iron or Horses, we can get all the other techs by pointy stick. I am thinking our first target should be China as we want to avoid Riders if we can. Greece already has Hoplites and they are better to take out with Knights or MDI. So, in addition to all else we need to do, we should prolly find China's borders and start a worker roading to the north at some point.

imho, top proirity is getting our settler fastory up and running and pumping out some cities.

What other tasks have we to look forward at, well in the next 20 to 30 turns? :mischief:

Oh, the corrected city planning map is attached.

I love double posts, good for the spam count. Besides, I was out of smilies!

NOTE TO ALL TEAMS: Please try to remember to upload a save at 1000 BC, i.e. turn 80. Most of you will probably do so anyway, but some teams don't always work to ten-turn sets.

When every active team has reached 1000 BC I shall publish the QSC statistics for all the saves that are submitted for that date. This will be an opportunity for you to compare your early-game progress with your competitors.

We're generally very good to sticking with our 10 turns, so it shouldn't be a problem.

QSC in the sgotm. That's so  :)

@Captain: You have been away for a while . You can see all the previous SGOTM QSC stats if you follow the link at the bottom of the SGOTM progress page.

This made me realise I forgot to give you a "Nice opening Capt.". Wasn't being rude or anything I just had 5 pages of posts to catch up on after the weekend and it slipped my mind.

Also, my vote lies with saving for IW and getting it for a bargain price once china know it.

btw, that was a damn nice opening capt. :goodjob: :goodjob:

All these :goodjob: :goodjob:  being thrown around, I hope I'm not the first :shakehead :thumbdown :thumbdown.

BTW, I got it but won't get a chance to play until tomorrow after work, so there is plenty of time for comments.

I agree that the culture issue will be too much to try to grab that northern horse. We should plant a city near the coast so we can culturally claim the horse on the other side of the scarry looking wet stuff.

As far as the techs go if we can keep adding cities let's keep research close to the max and continue trading with our neighbors. We should have the tech lead by the end of the AA.

We need our settler factory up and running so that we can fill up our island and force our 2 neighbors to look elsewhere for city sites.

If we're fortunate, another civ will build a city near the horses across the pond that we can "obtain" and build a harbor? I hope we have Iron nearby!

At Emperor, I don't think we'll be able to keep up in tech, especially if they have any more contacts. But we can build Warriors, if Iron is near, so we can take all the techs we want by pointy stick.

Not just that, so we can produce an Army of Conquest!! China's time is drawing near. :hammer:

Nice smilies Mistfit. Imagine the trouble I could get into using those.

I must admit though, it would be nice if those swordies would wipe each other out once in a while. I'd hate to have to fight the Chinese to a standstill. :mischief:

Just took a longer look at the save. Our Lux slider is at 30%, (though it will change as the factory grows and shrinks as it pumps a settler) so until we claim some luxes, we're not going to be doing a lot of research, imho. After we get the northern city build, perhaps we should send a settler for the dyes? Then head for city site 3. By then we should have a worker available to make a colony and a warrior, or heaven forbid, a Spear  to guard it.

While I know it will be a while to Writing, do we go Literature next? We should be educated warmongers... :mischief:

EDIT - And yes, that was a VERY, VERY, VERY good opening Capt.

EDIT2 - claification
