How about letting some of the heroes spawn only through the Great General points?

Unless the great commander is taking that slot in Shadow.

That's very interesting. But it wouldn't allow for someone on the losing side of a war to build their hero to save them...
Still might be doing for Civ specific heroes, maybe as a mod at least.

Well, you do get Great General points when defending, and the Great Wall wonder gives more points in your own territory. And the imperialistic trait gives you more points as well (maybe only in your territory).

And a defender usually kills more. Maybe even if he is losing the war overall. But a hero could turn the tide.

Heroes already are a double win thing, but this way, it could be by effort.

I have thought it is a shame that normal units that reach really high levels can't become heroes... in a sense that is exactly what soldiers with huge amounts of experience are. i have thought of a mechanic like attaching a great general to a level 10-12 character or somesuch. of course, calabim could horribly abuse this, but it's a thought

Lol i feel like i suggested this a long time ago.

However I doubt it will happen for an entirely differnt reason--quests. In shadow so far each hero is specced to have a quest that triggers to give you them.

I assumed that the great commander would take that place. I think the thing with the highly experienced units is that there needs to be something like combat 6-10, and maybe a couple other special promos.

It might be kinda cool to get heroes like that, though, but then there should be more than one hero available like that. maybe they could be semi-hero type unique units that spawn with a few high end hero only promotions, but not necessarily the hero promotion itself. like one might be a t3 arcane with twin cast that doesn't lock up a summoner or archmage slot, or another one might be mellee unit with defense 1+2, or mounted with strength 1+2.

still, all the functions of the general would need to be addressed.

I would like some modifications to Adventurer spawning. As someone who usually plays builder style, the Grigori, who are my favorite flavorwise, aren't such a great choice. What really nothers me is that the Altar of the Luonnotar, which seems to fit their flavor perfectly, weakens this civ by making aventurers harder to get. Would it be possible for the adventurer GPP to increase constantly as total GPP do, or something like that?

Getting an Altar victory with the Grigori is tricky, I've found. It generally involves levelling up some mercenaries to burn as Luonnotar for altar-building purposes. If you stay financial through the early game, you shouldn't have any trouble with research costs. Focus on getting some non-adventurer units to Luonnotar level, and burn them for the Altars in a non-GPP city. Make sure that said city has plenty of production, though, because that last step is a doozy. Takes forever to build. If you can generate a great engineer or two, save them for the last Altar increment, and you'll have the game wrapped. Easier said than done, right? heh

I missed this in my browsing.

That's definitely cool. One problem I've had with FFH is just how dominant heroes can be. Even a relatively modest hero like Rantine can pull out the whoopie stick once they've been around a while. In fact, Rantine once killed Hyborem in a game of mine just a few turns after he appeared, before Hyborem could level up.

Making it a civ-wide project/quest to get a hero makes the payoff seem proportion as compared to simply having a production city crank them out.

Interesting. I don't think hero's need to be re-designed but I do feel that a set of "lesser" heros would add a lot of flavour to the game. I am working on a modmod which has just that, a group of lesser heros without the Hero promotion but who have access to other promotions and who start with slightly increased abilities. Each is distinctly different have a different role to play depending on the game you are running. They were suppose to be created via "champions" (adventurer's) which are great people but that seems to be causing crashes so I have made them build-able at certain techs. Another way to incorporate this dynamic would be to give the civs palace a small chance (like 1-2%) of generating a "lesser hero" adventurer type unit which could be upgraded (at a cost) to one of several civ specific "lesser heros".

Anyways, I think the current heros are fine, I'd just like to see some other personalities as well.
