According to the comp 39. ... Rxg3+ is a blunder but I can't see how I'm supposed to save my knight.

If you looked at it with a computer it should have told you exactly how to save the knight. Simply Nf2 and if Kxf2 Rh2+ grabbing his bishop.

Yeah but Fritz sucks. It just says "?? Better was Rh5.

Shoot, that move is great. Why the heck did Fritz recommend Rh5???

Good news, so far against alicorn in match 2, I think it's pretty close. We're eight moves in, and I've set up quite nicely. I think this game is going to be very interesting.

Here's an amusing game that just finished on Chess.com. I definitely didn't play very well, and if any of the better players here would like to comment on it, I'd be very happy.

1. e4 Nf6
2. e5 Nd5
3. d4 d6
4. c4 Nb6
5. exd6 exd6
6. Nf3 Bg4
7. Be2 Nc6

As far as I know all this is theory/boring opening play.

8. O-O

I made this move quickly without considering ... Bxf3 9.Bxf3 Nxc4 appears to lose a pawn (though 10. Bxc6+ bxc6 11. Qa4 wins it back). I was a bit scared for the few seconds after I made the move.

8. ... Be7
9. b3 O-O
10. Nbd2 h6

I don't get this move.

11. Bb2 Bf6
12. Ne4 Bxf3
13. Nxf6+ Qxf6
14. Bxf3 Nd8
15. Qd2 c6
16. Rfe1 d5
17. Re5

I made this move quickly. Why? I'm not sure. I somehow failed to see that my c4 pawn was under attack. That's twice in this game. Maybe it's because c4 pawns generally don't come under attack.

17. ... dxc4
18. Be4 cxb3
19. Rf5 Qd6
20. d5

Heh. I'm down a pawn, might as well go for his king.

20. cxd5
21. Be5 Qc6
22. Bd3 bxa2
23. Rf6 Ne6
24. Rxh6 f6
25. Bxf6 gxh6
26. Qxh6

It looks like I'm completely lost. 27. ... Rxf6 28. Qxf6 and I'm down a piece and some pawns with barely any compensation. But my opponent's next move?

26. ... 1-0???

Did he see something I didn't?

You're threatening mate on g6 & h7. He can't stop them both. If he moves his rook to f7 you mate him on h8. :)

But if he moves his rook to f6, I wouldn't be able to mate him on h8 since I would no longer have a bishop on f6! :crazyeye:

That is a bit odd... my computer ranks Rh5 (-0.14) as the third best move behind Nf2 (-1.12) and Rxg3 (-0.29) at depth 9/15. What kind of computer do you have and how long was it allowed to think? While I have a brand new computer my chessmaster finds Nf2 faster than a blink of the eye at 4/10 depth. I must dig up my copy of Fritz and see what it says about this position.

I had it on five seconds a move, IIRC.

16. d5 looks good, not that what you played was bad.

17. Ba3 wins an exchange, no?

18. Be4 doesn't look so good... Ba3 still works.

Why not recapture the pawn with 19. axb3? You do have some compensation for the pawn. In fact, my computer gives a small edge to white here.

If black plays 19...Qe6 my computer claims you are in bad shape. Probably lost already.

20. d5 is even worse. My computer assure me you are quite dead after Nc4.

Until and including move 21 you can still play axb3 and get a defendable position.

Black played well until the end and was overwhelmingly winning. Then he resigned. My computer gives -3.20.

I don't like either. And ChessMaster 9000 you need the CD for. I don't like the "phantom analysis lines" either (where it goes over it's recommendations rapid fire in a grayed out mode instead of letting you follow the lines @ your leisure).

There are ways to avoid needing the cd. My policy is that if you have bought the original you are morally in the clear about circumnavigate stupid limitations like needing the cd. As for "phantom analysis lines" I am guessing you are referring to the game analysis function? I never use that, I find that the mentor lines are all that you need.

Could someone analyze this game vs. LoneWolfEburg (Lone Wolf here) that I resigned? Was there any hope for me to win? (I was black.)

Personally, taking a look at the board, I don't see how it's possible for me to squeak out a win!

I was clearly in the lead with two extra pawns, but resigning was premature.

That is probably true, but when I analyzed the game with Tournament Chess after resigning by playing each move, your moves were always positive, and mine were always negative. I did not like the way it looked.

The numbers after a move estimate the position after that move, not the move itself. So, if my every move is followed, by , say, (+2.05), that doesn't mean that my every move improves the position by 2.05 points. It only means that I'm in the lead, but not advancing so far.

3. dxe5 white has captured a pawn and you reply by Be6, that means you have now lost a pawn. The game is probably objectively lost already. You desperately need to learn counting material.

As for the last position, You should definately not resign in this position. Why? Because you do not know if it is won or lost. If you need to ask if there was any hope you are not sure and you should NOT resign. Keep playing even if you think it's lost, your opponent might make a mistake. Until you gain 500 rating points or so, keep playing the positions out. If nothing else you learn how to win when you are ahead.

3. dxe5 d4 isn't that bad if you know what you are doing. (Althrough it still gives up a pawn and is not exactly sound).

I usually resign after losing a piece with no compensation.
