Opps I was wrong (in my premature exuberance I overlooked Kh2). Now it's much more complicated but I still think I have the win (or at least a draw).

Sicilian tournament led to first loss on Chess.com

Played a line the books say is sharp (10 ... o-o-o) and got crunched when white found an improvment (14 Bf4 !)

Yeah Bf4 looks like a good move. Your 0-0-0 looked risky.

Yes, good ol' c3 sicilian though I don't know it's in & outs as well as I should (I have a could books on it but have only gone thru maybe 3 or 4 games in each one). Mostly I play it because it seems solid & because I'm too lazy to learn all the main line sicilian stuff.

its very risky - the main line is 10 ... exd5 which leadsto a complex position - but I wanted to try out a new line. My opponent managed to improve on a master game which black won!

I think they mention that d5 push in one of my books but I don't have any of 'em with me right now (long story). The great thing about correspondence is that you don't actually have to memorize all the lines.

yeah - I treated this tournament as a chanc eto play some sharp lines aganst very good players.

I've now crossed a few lines out of my reference books!

Well, since I have the next 2 days off work, I'm going to play some games against the Tournament Chess AI and see if I can't learn some new tricks. The Tactics Trainer (after I turned off timing) gave me a problem rated 2144, which I couldn't solve of course. I'm hoping that playing against the AI, which is pretty good, will help me improve my game overall.

Bah - playing too many games. I've already blundered a couple of times by playing moves in the wrong order and leaving pieces en prise. Not good against 2400 players!

Yeah, playing tons of games/tournies is very tempting but it's generally not a good idea. I blundered pretty severely against a 1460 player & now am two pawns down in the middlegame. Fortunately it's an unrated tournament (though I did not notice that when I joined).

I accepted a draw in this game in a tourney I'm playing. I'm a bit dissapointed because I thought I should have had a win in that endgame had I played it better. I'm not certain though & chess.com analysis engine seems to be down or something (and no chess software on this comp, it's not mine to install on).

From the final position (where the draw was offered) I did not see a forced win for black (unless white played some very bad moves).

Queen endgames are really difficult - too many chances for perpetuals.

A draw looks reasonable to me.

But try to have fun. It's not like someone can play all 10^50 games of it. What's important is finding people who know how strong the position is that was once considered unclear before.

Well, my match on board 13 could be going worse... actually, I'm feeling pretty good, all things considered.

It feels like cheating, but for the first 4 moves or so I simply used the game explorer, choosing moves that seemed to lead to better and better odds. Sure enough, by 5. e4 there were only 6 games in the database, but all of them lead to a win for black [that's me ]

However, that only means that it will be up to me to play the position through to the end!

I have 26 active games which is much more than I can handle really. I get impatient and select a move that looks superficially reasonable to get on with it.

Took a fast look at it. Seems white could have won a pawn with 16. Nxe6 Qxe6 (16...Rxe6 17. Bd5) 17. Qxa7

26...Rf7 scores around -2.50 and 27...Rf7 around -2.00. After Kh7 you are still better but probably not winning anymore.

If I didn't have 26 games to tend to I might go into more detail but since I do...

My opponent made a subtle but devastating error in this game. At first I nearly panicked, thinking it was a fairly strong move -- probably would have messed it up OTB. Then the light came on.
