We don't see how we are violating the NATO treaty. One of the main clauses of the treaty is that wars from the Old World will not be brought into the New World. Nor does it say that the signees have to recognise the claims of another nation.
The United Kingdoms harsh words against our subjects will not be taken likely. We see no reason why the United Kingdoms should be given the entirety of the lakes just because they have colonized parts of the Lake. If the United Kingdoms use force against our colonists we will retaliate in kind. We will not advance into lands that the United Kingdom has settled but we will not give up lands that we can easily colonize before our competitors.
Do note that if England starts colonize this region first and the United Kingdoms start using aggression against our colonists the United Kingdoms will be in violation of NATO.

ooc: I am against one nation making a peace treaty, that all nations will be forced to accept. Thus to make peace unless it is a DECLARED COALITION then each and individual nation that is at war must make a seperate peace treaty. This was the preferred method of peace negotiations UNTIL the Congress of Vienna in 1815, although there were several times where a multi-state negotiation took place before then.
This is most likely in the case of China making a peace treaty that they expect European nations to follow. Given the general distrust, xenophobia and outright racisim displayed in this era, I do believe that the European nations would reject any Chinese-sponsored treaty with Potugal out of hand.
