Like I said before, I have yet to meet a man who tells his wife what to do (and she listens). But I often meet men who do exactly what their wives ask of them. So it's a bit strange to assume the opposite (unless I suppose the story is set somewhere in the developing world or something).
I think its probably pretty common for spouses to do what their spouse asks them to. Its also probably common for adults to resist being told what to do.

Even if you're not in a place where law enforcement is entirely non-existent it would still take time for them to show up. However, like traitorfish said, it seems like you hang out in really seedy places if you've come across this several times.

Real conversation I once had:

Counselor assigned to Tim: "You need to be careful. This job you you got...to get there you are going to have to go through this neighborhood, and it's pretty rough."
Tim: "You do realize that when you say 'pretty rough', you actually mean that people like me live there, right? Don't worry though. I'll be passing through at like five in the morning. All the people like me will be sleeping."

The counselor was assigned by the Bureau of Prisons to supervise my reintegration to society, and that conversation is etched in my mind as one of the top ten funniest exchanges I've ever personally witnessed.

Ultimately, yes, I am welcomed in really seedy places.

"You do realize that when you say 'pretty rough', you actually mean that people like me live there, right? Don't worry though. I'll be passing through at like five(XYZ time) in the morning. All the people like me will be sleeping."
 I can not even tell you the number of times I have said EXACTLY these words to someone...

What's 'the pit'?

Oh. I had to look this up myself, but I'd have thought you'd know, Mr Ban.

The pit, or mosh pit (hence moshing) is an area at a heavy metal band gig where the audience indulge in slam dancing. And in principle they do this consensually so that people on the periphery who don't want to be involved can avoid it.

It's a bit like the circle that forms round school boys fighting. If that still happens. I'm not sure whether it does or not.
