No.

Previous knowledge of Civ3 was not very helpful come Civ4.

You should play/not play Civ5 because it is fun/not fun to you.

A good balance of perspectives here - thanks everybody.

I've decided to purchase 5 and give it a good play over the coming months. Not for "training purposes", as I suggested in my OP. As several of you suggested, that goal is likely futile (and kind of lame/depressing). Rather, I will give it a shot because it will be fun and help build my excitement for October. I also enjoy the history and evolution of the franchise, and I would like to draw my own conclusions in the shift from 4 to 5, and then again from 5 to 6.

Thanks for the suggestions about various mods. I have taken note.

i would suggest getting reaquainted with Civ IV. Civ VI seems to have borrowed a few themes from IV. A sprawling city, Civics board, aircraft flying overhead, cartoonish graphics especially the trees, religion makes a more prominant role, Peter the Great makes a reappearence from Civ IV as does Saladin.
