I usually just pass the nuclear non-proliferation treaty because I don't want to have to build the project and have to deal with nukes. Is it better to sign it, or pass it up and have nukes?

desert..

i think genghis would approve

Unless you have an overwhelming tech advantage (Nuke to rifles) sign it. It is amazing how much damage an AI can cause with nukes.

I defied it once because I thought my ICBMs might be vital to winning the game. I never had to use them, though, because the AI ended up using tactical nukes on each other. It was half a world away but the global warming was pretty bad on my continent. Must have been a wasteland on theirs.

For those who haven't defied the treaty, you might be interested to know that it netted me five  in every city.

Best scenario: you can build nukes before the AI can, then sign the treaty and be the only one with them.

Usual scenario: sign it as soon as you think the AI can build them (i.e. after the Manhattan project and someone has fission.) Unless you use them right before the end of the game global warming really becomes problematic, and even one or two nukes used against you is a real drag.

The nukes creates a random factor in the warfare. Everyone can nuke you from everywhere. It doesn't matter how powerfull are you or how good your tactical skills are. That's why I don't like the nukes. And signing the treaty is the only reason why I don't swith off the diplomatic victory.

that's the ticket. the ban is only on building them. if you were far ahead enough to build a stockpile, and nobody else could, you can still use whatever you had in the bank, and they have none of their own. which is truly evil.

but i hate fallout. it's truly eviler IMO. i'm the one that gifts the AI coal hoping the won't make nuke plants and start global warming with the dang meltdowns! i think i've only ever used ICBMs twice, and that was in the last 5 turns of games that had already been all over but the fat lady singing for ages, just to see the graphics ;).

i've never ever had the AI use nukes on me, the longest games i've played were always vanilla where they were bugged and would never use them. i'll have to try a long one now that it's fixed, see how scary it is !
