We built some military units but they are just sitting around in Cities. We had a great chance to poach Rome from the Independents since France was going after them to weaken the Independents for us. Unfortunately, it appears that we have just holed-up and are hiding in our Cities. Now, France has captured Rome and is stronger than ever. Having more than 1 Military Unit in a City is overkill when there are still Cities to capture.
At this point, we should probably prepare to go to war with France, since we are surrounded by them but we have stolen their Iron, so we have a decent chance to beat them. We'd essentially need a few units to go for France's eastern City of Berlin (say, 2 or more Cannons and 4 or more other units). Then we'd want 1 Longbowman in each of our Cities and probably 3 units (a combination of Longbowmen and Pikemen totalling 3 units) defending our City of Venetie in the south next to Rome, since that City is the only City that France would attack easily on the first turn of a war. Other than those units, we'd want a few hanging around near the western edge of our main borders with France. The units on our western edge would stay within our borders after war was declared and would wait for France's Knights to come after us, then attack them with War Elephants in mini-stacks of 3+ mixed-units (i.e. not all War Elephants) so that any of our wounded attackers will be defended.
Probably we want a good mix of Cannons, War Elephants, and Musketmen for our offensive army. Longbowmen are good to defend Cities, while a Pikeman or two would help in Venetie. Don't forget to send a Longbowman to our easternmost City, in case France gets sneaky and sends a unit from the Russia area to take that City.
Once we have fought off France's invasion into our territory, we will hopefully have captured Berlin and can leave it defended with 1 Longbowman. Then, the bulk of our army can heal up, then join up together within our borders on the western edge of our empire (close to the Paris side). After that, we can march west in one big stack, which will happen over the course of a couple of turnsets.
So, the situation is salvageable, as long as we build up our military forces. We should not be building useless buildings but instead be building an army. Banks are useless to us, by the way, since we have such a high Science Slider rate. After we have built up our army, we can prepare by putting our forces in the right positions before declaring war with France.
If there are any buildings that we should build, they are:
1. Christian Monasateries, for extra Hammers and Gold
2. Christian Temples, for extra Hammers and Gold at a higher cost, but we also get +1 Happiness
3. Maybe Libraries if a City really needs the Culture
4. Barracks
5. That's it. Units the rest of the time, so that we can lay the smack down on France slowly but surely.
Also, why are our Galleys set to auto-explore? They are useless to us that way. We really should send them into the Mediterranean Sea (i.e. near Rome) to fascilitate attacks in that region. If nothing else, we could then the status of Independent Cities in the Egypt area, to see if any of these Cities can still be captured. The two boats are going to the exact same place thanks to using auto-explore, which makes them redundant. Hopefully, someone is smart enough to figure out how to cancel the auto-explore mission of a Galley, otherwise our navy will be wandering around in a wasteful manner.
We also need to be VERY CAREFUL to refuse all World Map <-> World Map trades. If we give away our World Map to ANYONE, we might lose our first Historical Victory Condition.
Instead, we should be buying World Maps but not selling any. All it takes is one person to accidentally sell our World Map and we could easily lose out on our first easy-to-achieve Historical Victory condition. It has been a while since I played RFC, so I might be wrong, but I think that achieving some of your Historical Victory conditions is a VERY EASY way to get Stability Points. Let's not waste that opportunity.
There's another good reason to send our Galleys into the Mediterranean Sea: so that a Settler + Longbowman can be loaded onto one of the Galleys. That Galley can then be sent to Australia to get another easy Historical Victory condition here.
So, we need to click on our Galleys and cancel their exploration orders (press the "Backspace <--" key on your keyboard or else give them new movement orders). If we forget to do so, then we'll just waste our Civ's Unique Naval Power. It's up to the next player as to whether or not the Dutch become the actual Dutch by playing to the Civ's strengths (using our boats instead of letting the computer control the boats).
As for techs, it looks like we could buy Philosophy from Ragnar. After Drama, we might as well go straight for Education. Philosophy + Education = the path to Liberalism. Obviously, we should refuse to trade away Education to any AI. It's hard to win the Liberalism race in RFC, but we can do it if we take the time to buy Philosophy from Ragnar now while we can still get a good bargain on it, then grab Education and keep Education to ourselves.
