Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth

I'm pumped. Right away, I'll say that this isn't SMAC and it would be unfair to expect it to be the exact same game. But it looks to be its spiritual successor and I hope it'll be quite fun.

You know what would be nice? Since this is billed as a part of the civilization series, what if you could export your civ5 space race save files into Beyond Earth?

Might not work cleanly. If they're trying to be the followup to Alpha Centauri (and probably avoid any modern political controversies), I'd imagine that nations aren't launching these space ships. This means your Civilization and its space ship can't be exactly the ones in the game.

Maybe they'll focus more on cultural/racial backgrounds rather than specific civs to choose from? Either way I almost lost bowel control during that two minute trailer!!!

Also, I wonder about what directions they'll let science branch out. Stem cell research? Cloning? Plasma weaponry? Cybernetics? HAS SCIENCE GONE TOO FAR?!?! :borg:

Pure speculation, they could import civ5 savegame as sort-of "Backstory Maker".

While I wouldn't care much about racial thing. Does it cool to have Aztecs Ultra-Militarist in space?

Yes, it is not SMAC as it's 15 years later, SMAC/SMAX is less than half a gigabyte and it's very fun. Needless to say I have pretty high expectation with this. There are so many potential to any game that will be Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri's quasi-successor. Songs of SMAC dev are dreams of SMBE dev. Hopefully any supernatural being will watch it's development :)

@LouisXXIV I wonder how can it cause political controversy, and I pretty sure trailer imply that the space launch doesn't look "united".

As a SMAX fan. I am really happy by this. BUT, I have little faith that any company would release playable and complete game in "release date" (It's Civ5 trauma, actually)

Now, I didn't like SMAC/SMAX (and GalcivII actually) because of it's space theme, trailer, graphic or boxart.

I love them due to their lore and how it developing as I play. Story that beautifully woven into game. When I play as a leader, I am building what my character want to build. Envision what my character want to see in the harsh worlds. I love all the quotes and backstory in SMAC.

So, I won't give my hope on it yet. But I wish it worth 50 bucks for many people. I personally want to lost myself into their deep world; where factions conduct war with each other with both words and gun. I hope they would offer a kind of reality that would make me addicted to it.

But whether Firaxis can, or will do that, is their choice.

While it isn't a direct SMAC clone it certainly seems that they are copy-pasting large parts of the lore from that into the new game. The Gamespot Article discusses the Harmony path, which involves awakening the sentient planet (sounds familiar).

Could be done, you could once you launch your ship take bonuses with you depending on your position on earth: An autocracy civ could have better military units, first to send their spaceship gets there, higher population civs can have more starting units. You assume in the flight the people have established some kind of cultural identity as colonists. Heck, you could even have deliveries from Egypt to New Egypt, and New Egypt could send back things from the new planet that give you some kind of bonus or you could emancipate yourself from your home civilization.

Jesus Christ, I have just read interview with the designers of this game and I am so hyped...

Great news, but it makes me wonder how the Pandora game/crew/fan-base will react. It looks to be similar in the same way that civ% is similar to W:MotA.

Just saying'

Victory conditions:
As McDonough mentioned, the game’s three affinities are closely tied to three of the five possible victory conditions. Of course, if you’re not willing to take your affinity to its conclusion, there are two other options available that are affinity-neutral. The five victory conditions are:

Harmony: awaken a semi-sentient super organism within the planet and reach a new level of consciousness
Purity: terraform the alien planet into a mirror of Earth and relocate Earth’s populace to this new Eden
Supremacy: embrace cybernetic augmentation, then return to Earth and "free" the people from their bodies
Contact: discover evidence of intelligent life and construct a means to establish first contact
Domination: actually, domination is the same as in every other Civilization

I am really hyped for this game now. I love Sci-Fi, but combined with Civ? Oh my.

I've never played any of those space games before, but this one is sounding and looking amazing!

Now give us a gameplay vid!

Is there going to be a sub-forum for the game?

Similarly to SMAC, the Civs will not be the traditional ones:

"Factions are a little different than they are in Civ. Instead of playing as familiar civilizations like, say, the Romans, or Russia, you'll play as futuristic fictional factions—like the American Reclamation Corporation. Or the Panasian Cooperative." (from Kotaku article)

Moreover, the game begins after a cataclysmic event on earth.

So it seems doubtful to me that a converter will be included. :undecide:

Is there going to be a sub-forum for the game?

Yes, Camikaze has confirmed that there will be.

Read: Great news, but it make me wonder how the game that inspired from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri will react.

Comment (translate to human language) : It both look to be similar in the same way that Civ5 to Civ4, Oh wait..

Thought on other's post : Very confident that converter can be made pretty easily.

Argument : There are policies and ideology in Civ5 that can be used to define the backstory of converted Civ

Doubt : Firaxis may release it as DLC...

I wonder whether they are using some form of advanced civ5 engine, at least that would be a possibility if Civ6 is already in development. I don't even like futuristic themes but Civ5 is so well done I will just throw money at the screen again. :mischief:

Not to start a flame war here but Civ5 release is nothing compared to RomeII. Civ was more of a big experiment that needed refining (a lot), but TW:RII was outright broken. Still gigabyte-patches on Steam every week...

Even the windows are hexes!
:D:D

Visually I don't see a huge leap over Civ5 . I am assuming it will be around the same specs.

Granted we only see 3 screen shots so far and there is an orbital layer, which doubles the strategic layers. (could there also be an underwater layer?)

In anycase, I wasn't planning on getting a new computer until 2015, hoping this game doesn't tempt me to upgrade XD

Apparently the game will be amongst the first wave of products optimised for up-to-date AMD graphics technology. Though the screenshots do indeed bear a striking resemblance to Civ5.

Never played SMAC, but I'm excited!

Hey guys, I have updated the Original Post so now it includes few very interesting Developer Quotes. I am sooooo hyped...

"Factions are a little different than they are in Civ. Instead of playing as familiar civilizations like, say, the Romans, or Russia, you'll play as futuristic fictional factions—like the American Reclamation Corporation. Or the Panasian Cooperative." (from Kotaku article)

On the other hand, check this quote: Supremacy doesn't always mean military. So the civ with the more militaristic bent, which is Brazilia? may pick Supremacy, but they may not.

So wait, are we going to get Nations with Traits?

My bets: USA, Brasil, EU, Russia, China, India, Panasian Cooperative (Japan, Korea, South East Asia?), African Union.
