It is used to be when Sid Meirs name was associated to a game, you could almost assume it would be loved by any strategy fan.

Civilization

Alpha Centauri

Colonization

Pirates!

Railroad Tycoon

to name a few

However, the latest Civ City (Rome) and Railroad tycoon that just came out not only are buggy budget titles, but they suck balls on all every level.

I would like to go back in the future Terminator style, and make him play his own games, so that he realizes that he is about to create Cyberdyne industries and doom us all to a life under cyborg rule.

don't play his games until you read the reviews. I learned that the hard way.

buggy as hell = railroad tycoon and featureless/bad

same for the civcity title. it has very little to do with civilization titles.

Why this guy doesn't hire some of the people from this board like Sevo and just give them the resources to create actual playable and fun games, following Sid's test of a good game;
Is it cool?
Is it fun?

Railroad tycoon and Civcity could have been cool, but they certainly are not fun and they are flawed.

Sid, do you need money? has your name been co-opted like David Cassidy in the 70s by corporate money men?

I haven't played Pirates but it had good reviews, and people said they were very happy with it.
About other games i agree, Firaxis does its best and is the best company on TBS games. It would be better instead of creating games like Civcity or Railroad Tycoon to concentrate itself on a greater number of series of TBS games. They would have a lot more success.

Yes, Pirates! wasn't half bad, but it certainly didn't seem like Sid had anything to do with it. it didn't have the qualities you come to associate with Sid's work, such as the original Pirates.

Pirates! I can forgive though. It wasn't half bad.

CivCity is downright buggy and a just plain poor design.

Railroad Tycoon that recently came out is missing most of the features from the last poptop games that made them decent and borrows heavily in style. The double tracking and automated signals are absolutely abysmal.
I could think of a half a dozen ways to have fixed that using common sense instead of what they did.

I have a hard time accepting that Sid even played these games before their release.

But even so, if he is going to let them put his name there, he should take steps to preserves its reputation.

I believe that I read somewhere that Sid had nothing to do with CivCity, that they only used his name to sell the game, specially to the civers.

No doubt a lesson learned from Krusty the Clown.

CivCity: Rome didn't have Sid's name prefixed in the title. FireFly did most of the work for CivCity and Firaxis just collaborated with them to add some Civish elements to the game (ex. tech tree, Civilopedia).

For Railroads, I heard Firaxis intentionally made the game simpler in order to make it accessible to a wider audience...

The 'simpler' is actually far worse, especially when it comes to double tracking. I believe it is probably that they didn't really play the other railroad tycoons out there much before they copied them.

Here is something I wrote about Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, since I was venting already;

Marketing Sleaze:
"Okay, so...what is hot today in games?"

Marketing Analyst:
"Um, well ..first person shooters for world war 2"

Marketing Sleaze:
"no...world war two is to overdone, i just finished making seven games about World War II to release on November 7th at the same time because that is the only time people will buy computer games...what other setting do these 12 year old kids (who are the only ones who buy computer games or who computer games are bought for, apparently as christmas gifts) like?"

Marketing Analyst:
"Um, well ..you know, Elves and Orcs and stuff"

Marketing Sleaze:
"Okay, do a first person shooter, except use orcs and elves and make it massively multiplayer"

Marketing Analyst:
"okay...should we call it something original?"

Marketing Sleaze:
<SLAPS ANALYST>
"god no, you call yourself an analyst? these 12 year old kids who send their moms to the computer store to buy console games (which is why I want to shrink down the PC game sections in all the ebgames) only buy games that are based on some other game, so call it um...Doom Dark Master of Orion IV"

Marketing Analyst:
"Um, well ..what about Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, that is more akin to something of the fantasy genre and most people will think it has something to do with the indepth and beloved computer adventure games of their youth and buy our ridiculously buggy first person shooter we slapped together to sell during christmas rush."

Marketing Sleaze:
"Okay, whatever nerd. I don't care what it is called, just make me more money."

6 months later:
Game is released, super buggy, full of spyware to gather information to send you advertising and almost perfectly in the christmas window, having nothing at all to do with the might and magic series, being more of a sad and pathetic bastardization of Oblivion and the Battlefield series.

RPG Watch gives it a 8 out of 10 because they are owned by the marketing company that hatches bullfeathers ideas like this.

Somewhere, someone in hell rubs his hands together maniacly, pleased that his plan is working.

Railroads! isn't intended to be a new version of Railroad Tycoon. You're not going to be satisfied if you look at it that way. Firaxis was trying to make an easily accessible simulation game for casual fans to pick up. I've spent a good amount of time playing Railroads!, and I think it's a lot of fun. It's nowhere near as complex as a game like Civ4, but that's not always a bad thing. :)

Pirates got average reviews and i agree with them.

The game gets boring fast and its just rehash of the same ol same ol stuff.

It doesnt have the replay value of the civ series.

Hmm? Pirates got excellent reviews (it's an excellent game too :p)

As Thunderfall said, CivCity isn't a Firaxis game and it doesn't have the Sid prefix (though I expect Firaxis had some level of involvement in it)

Anyway it's a bit early to be saying that the 'Sid Meier's' brand is on the way down, especially so soon after Civ IV and Pirates, which are both brilliant.

Exactly. Railroads is the perfect game for me when im tired of shooting clone soldiers and trying to find and kill that spooky little girl. Sometimes i just wanna play around with my railroad and watch the trains go back and forth. Its a relaxing game. really.

Agreed. I'm really enjoying Railroads in its simplicity.

But Sid should really be careful what he puts his name on.

Since Firaxis was bought, can Sid even say what titles his name gets put on? (I honestly don't know).

FWIW, I like Railroads.

His name it put on all games that are sequels to games he made before.

For example, Sid did only original Civilization, yet since Civ2-4 are all sequels of first Civ, they all have "Sid Meyer's" in their name.

And Civ IV is a bad game anyway!

Seriously worse game play than Civ III.
