Yeah they invaded Belgium and Luxunburg to HELP Austria.
Oh yeah and some small unimportanct country called france :D

You should read up on history. France and Russia were allies so when Russia went to war with Austria then France had a treaty obligation.
Belguim was invaded because it refused to let German troops through.
The war was inevitable but the spark was started by Gavrio Princip a Serbian so it would be ignorant to blame Germany for the war.

lmao more

You see the Russian timetable for full mobilisation was 50 days. While the Germans timetable for mobilsation was 6 days. As such there principle position was the invasion of france in order to avoid a war on two fronts. The Russians in an attempt to "prevent" serbia from being attacked by Austria-hungry decided on a "partial mobilisation" designed to "tie down" Austria hungry forces and a form of intimiadation. As well as a show of support for serbia which was part of russia's sphere of interest.

Now germany was place in a difficult position with Russia's mobilsation. Germany could NOT allow Russians to be mobilisaed fully else there carefully timetable schilffline plan would be rendered useless. Germany thus had committed itself to invasion and attack on France, Belguim and Luxenburg on the sole purpose of "pre-emptive strike" which after all is an act of self defence.

Interesting that Other MAJOR powers including britian and Italy did not join into the war despite there "treaty obligations"

It would be equaly ignorant to blame the start of the war on the assasination of the arch duke Ferdinane.

Also belgium and Luxunberg were both considered neutral countries. In fact after the Franco-Prussian war and napolanic wars. Alsacan Lorrience was planed to be an independent nation acting as a "neutral buffer" between France and Germany. Of course this idea was rejected and the French built large numbers of forts and fixed defences on the border facing Germany. For this reason Belgium and Luxenburg was selected specificly for invasion. Given the history of warfare in Europe once german troops entered neutral belgium it could be see as no less then an invasion.

[fanfare] And now it's time for Episode 2 of "sysyphus the historical nitpicker"!!! [/fanfare]

Actually, Hitler was an Austrian.

But of course Aussies ( ;) ) speak German, so the joke still fits.

Anyway, this is spam, threadjacking and lousy humour all rolled into one, so I'll stop now

Ach! Ich bin ein Berliner! Schtecke einen gable ein miche, Ich bin fertig!

Damn you home stenographer!

In my “brief” survey of the six basic steps that transformed a small local conflict into a major global brou-ha-ha, I stressed that while each state had different motives they were each compelled by their own particular brand of desperation:

:goodjob:

I love it how he uses the words brou-ha-ha

The real story of World War I is the power struggle between London, Berlin and Paris, with everything else sinking to peripheral status already by September 1914.

Vrylakas summed it up quite nicely here.

Baldrick: No, the thing is: The way I see it, these days there's a war on, right? and, ages ago, there wasn't a war on, right? So, there must
have been a moment when there not being a war on went away, right?
and there being a war on came along. So, what I want to know is:
How did we get from the one case of affairs to the other case of
affairs?

Edmund: Do you mean "How did the war start?"

Baldrick: Yeah.

George: The war started because of the vile Hun and his villainous empire-
building.

Edmund: George, the British Empire at present covers a quarter of the globe,
while the German Empire consists of a small sausage factory in
Tangayika. I hardly think that we can be entirely absolved of blame
on the imperialistic front.

George: Oh, no, sir, absolutely not. (aside, to Baldick) Mad as a bicycle!

:D

Way off topic, and the original question has been answered.

Feel free to open a new 'How did WWI start?' thread in the History forum. There's probably already one there.
