Orders Locked! Update will most likely come Sunday Night, but if I can find the inspiration it might be up tonight.
First availability for playing out the battles in AC mode will come Sunday Night (time depending on when update goes up and when I get home from work), rather late monday night if anybody is on, and then more or less any time I am on on Tuesday. Would prefer to lock up second phase by Wednesday but we shall see.
The Month of Shaldine is showing signs of Internal Upheaval in Andor. Those who govern from Caemlyn have heard rumors of rebels and Whitecloaks in the western lands, and has sent nearly half the standing army west to deal with these potential threats. On the 14th day of the month, the forward force of the army, composed of Aiel and Cavalry, came across Baerlon, a large town in western Andor north of the Two Rivers. What they found was that the rebels held the town of Baerlon, although whether they took it by force or attacked it is unknown. Upon arriving, the forces arrayed looked like this:
From observation of the walls it is clear that the rebels are holding it with a small melee force within the city, and nearly 100 Longbowmen atop the small wooden walls surrounding the town. It is unknown whether the rebels have additional forces that may be called up from the south. After seeing the situation, a pigeon and a rider was sent east to Whitebridge, where the main force should have arrived by this point.
Once the message was received in Whitebridge, the commander of the main force of the army began moving west. However they had only been moving for two days when on the 16th, they met a force of Whitecloaks terrorizing a village along the main road.
Most of the full legion of Whitecloaks were setting up a camp on the western side of the village, but there were some numbers on the east side and within the village itself. It is unknown if the inhabitants of the village have been harmed, however the Whitecloaks are doing 'something'.
The White Tower
The White Tower sent out two forces to two different battlefronts at the beginning of the month. The main priority was to of course recapture Taim so he could be brought to the Tower and gentled. 50 Aes Sedai and 100 Warders departed the tower and headed west under the command of Lan. They found Taim quickly, trying to get around the southernmost river north of the Caralain Plain. He is presumed to be trying to lead his followers to the Black Tower.
However, the warders on scouting expeditions have found that the force appearing in front of them is meager compared to the one that is hiding in the hills to the north of the Tower Force.
Spoiler:
Tower: 50 Aes Sedai, 100 Warders, Lan
vs.
Taim: 200 Archers, 100 Pikemen, 100 Swordsmen, 250 Saldaean Heavy Cavalry, Taim, 2 Male Channelers
Black Force: 400 Saldaean Heavy Cavalry
Taim has a significant force, but even more interesting is the force to the northwest. Composed of 400 Saldaean Heavy Cavalry, the warder scouts cannot determine if they are Saldaeans chasing after Taim, or if it is another group of Taim's forces.
Now, does the White Tower retreat and wait for conventional reinforcements and let Taim slip south, press the attack and hope the One Power can overwhelm Taim quickly, or settle into a defensive stance and hope those forces to the Northwest are Saldaeans coming to the rescue?
The White Tower also sent a force of 10 Aes Sedai, 10 Warders, and 10 Blademasters north to Shienar, where they arrive just in the nick of time as news of an impending Trolloc invasion has reached Fal Dara, the northern fortress. Shienar's forces are quickly roused and brought to bear in Tarwin's Gap against what seems to be an overwhelming trollop invasion, to which Arafel has sent a small force in aid, composed of 400 archers and 50 Horse Archers. Jagelmar Agad, the Great Captain presiding in Shienar, holds command of the force, but has offered to submit to the tactical authority of the Aes Sedai in return for their help, and remain on in an advisory capacity.
Can the White Tower and Shienar hold out against what is estimated to be nearly a quarter of all of the trollocs in the blight?
Cairhien
Cairhien has not embarked upon any significant military ventures. Rather, it has set out to cleanse the Shaido Aiel from its borders and put a halt to their pillaging and raiding. After a few weeks of Skirmishes, it has come to a head in one significant battle. It is too late to send for reinforcements, and if you turn and run the Aiel just might run you down like dogs. However, the Shaido clearly have the advantage even if they are outnumbered.
Spoiler:
Cairhien: 5,000 Mass Levies, 1,000 Crossbowmen, 500 Pikemen, 500 Swordsmen, 800 Heavy Cavalry, 20 Light Cavalry, 14 Blademasters, L2 Leader
vs.
Shaido Aiel: 800 Aiel Warriors, 10 Wise Ones
It is the first real test of the new Cairhien General, and so all Cairhienin eyes are upon this battlefield. It may just make or break this nation.
The Shadow
The Shadow, in addition to the battle to be fought in Shienar, has launched raids in Kandor and Saldaea of quite some size. Most were completely successful, carrying back many bodies back to the blight. However a moderate force of 2,000 Trollocs, 80 Myyrdraal, 100 Draghkar, and 2 Dreadlords has been surrounded by the main defense force of Saldaea, comprising 1,500 Pikemen, 900 Saldaean Heavy Cavalry, 800 Archers, 500 Malkieri Heavy Cavalry, 200 Swordsmen, 5 Blademasters.
Image not available. Assume a Shadow army on a plain, surrounded on all sides by the Saldaeans, and at night so the exact location of all the forces is unknown.
The Crusade of the Light
The Crusade of the Light, bolstered by the purchase of the Band of the Red Hand which is en route from Cairhien and will arrive next turn, was over before it began. Instead of launching a powerful assault on Taraboner lands to take them back from the Seanchan, Amadicia found itself on the defensive against a large infantry force that pressed them back from the border, towards Amador itself. The army was rallied, levies were conscripted, and Whitecloaks gathered, in order to make a stand at Amador and hopefully regain momentum.
The thrust into Amadicia was not the only invasion executed by the Seanchan this month, but was only the first of four.
The Second comprised of a strike on Altara, centered on the struggle for Ebou Dar itself. The Seanchan daringly strike out from the sea into the city docks themselves and find rather little resistance.
Altara: 1,000 Mass Levies
100 Archers
40 Swordsmen
The third strike was one north from Tarabon onto Almoth Plain, where their main resistance was unorganized Dragonsworn and bandits.
The fourth strike was to invade Toman Head again, starting with Falme, the site of their decisive defeat a year earlier.
The War of the Doirlan Hills
Tear vs. Illian
Open hostilities have once again broken out between Tear and Illian, although nobody is quite sure who the aggressor is this time. Illian has set up a series of Hill Forts in the Doirlan hills on the western edge of the Plains of Maredo and Tear has set up a siege from the east. Illian may be outnumbered, but if the rumors are true and a forsaken leads the Illian armies, nothing short of the Dragon Reborn himself might save Tear from destruction.
Domani Civil War
The Domani civil war erupted in full force this month, and the lines are so scattered that no map can be drawn since they also move daily. No forces have gathered in one spot long enough to hold a major battle, although skirmishes consistently whittle down the forces on both sides. A Saldaean Force has begun to move to aid the throne of Arad Doman and will arrive next turn, forcing the rebels to press ever harder to gain ground before they arrive.
All players have the option of either playing out their battle in a chatroom for an enhanced tactical control, or sending moderately detailed war orders via PM to me. You have until 6 PM EST on Wednesday June 4th to do one of these options.
The power of the One Power was on full display on the northern edges of the Caralain Grass as the White Tower faced off against the former False Dragon Mazrim Taim. The White Tower brought only 50 Aes Sedai and 100 Warders to the field. They were outnumbered conventionally.
Divided into 4 groups of 25, 75 warders charged the enemy formation in front of them, composed of 200 enemy swordsmen and pikemen, as well as 200 Heavy Saldaean Horse. 25 Warders remained behind on the northern flank of the main body of Aes Sedai in order to defend against any possible flanking action by the enemy forces in the hills to the north. General Lan led the charge of the 75 Warders, who were immediately set upon by attacks by enemy male channelers, dismounting dozens and killing several. Eventually they closed with the Saldaean Horse, outnumbered at this point by nearly 7:1. They fought on, clearing a bloody path wherever they stepped, even though the majority were no longer mounted at this point. The saldaean Heavy Horse fought with tenacity and their reputation as some of the finest Heavy Cavalry in the world was well earned this day as they fought toe to toe with the elite warders.
Archers appeared on the northern hills, attacking the base Aes Sedai force as the Aes Sedai squared off with the Infantry force, accompanied by Taim and another channeler. The 25 Warders kept in reserve were sent to deal with them, and routed the nearly 200 archers even though they were filled with arrows by the time they reached the top of the hill. Afterwards, the surviving warders were sent charging west to attack Taim via conventional means, although the charging warders were me by nearly 100 Pikemen. The result was bloody for both sides, and a small knot of dismounted warders began fighting for their lives with enemies on all sides.
Meanwhile, 24 warders survived the initial charge against the enemy cavalry along with General Lan, and they regrouped as the 65 surviving Heavy Horse withdrew, bloodied and dispirited. The knot of warders had dwindled to 7.
The Aes Sedai themselves were fighting fro their lives as Taim appeared to have found an Angreal, an object that magnified the amount of the One Power that could be held and wielded by a single person. This angreal enabled him to work with his fellow male channeler to begin obliterating the Aes Sedai ranks. Eventually, after two full linked circles of 13 each fought with cohesion, Taim was shielded from the source and his fellow male channeler was also shielded, and then beheaded.
At this point the surviving warders from the earlier charge into the pikes were fighting Taim sword to sword while defending against his soldiers. Taim ordered the infantry to find the dead's horses and mount up, galloping past the Aes Sedai to freedom. However, the Aes Sedai tripped his horse and he was trampled to death. Lan then lead a fatal charge that left a lot of dead warders afterwards, but he and another fought their way heroically to the lone surviving warder among the remaining infantry.
Thankfully, a contingent of Saldaean Horse saved the day, riding in and cleaning up the field, rescuing Lan and his two Warders fitting alongside him. They returned.
Taim was killed, his forces routed, and the White Tower lost 31 Aes Sedai and 97 Warders. Such a battle may count as a victory for the White Tower, however it was not a pretty victory, and the loss of the warders may prove to be a grevious one from which to recover in the future. In this battle many lessons can be learned, among them is to utilize your channelers, whether male or female, as much as possible to turn the tide of a battle and eliminate the enemy easily and quickly. Another is to avoid charging cavalry into an organized force of Pikemen at all costs, even if they are elite such as warders.
