Just thought I'd make a thread for everyone just to sum up their thoughts on sim games they've played. I've been craving new ones to get into, and I figure other people might be too since the genre hasn't been getting much attention/love for a long while.

The Sims 3 - Meh. Less freedom than Sims 2, less content than base-game Sims 2, harder to mod, and overall -very- buggy. Bookworm Sims dying because they never go home from the bookstore/library, sims idling to death in their backyard, etc. I would recommend sticking to Sims 2 up until maybe the second expansion pack Sims 3 gets (the next one seems to just be Bon Voyage/Vacations, and those two were kinda lame as expansions.)

Spore - Limited replay value, only two fun phases (maybe three.) No matter what you do to your creature, it doesn't really change anything. You only change cosmetics, it still acts the same. A -gigantic- letdown, given all the claims they'd made about the game.

CivCity Rome - Caesar 4, but not as polished. The Civ themed research is a neat idea, but not handled well (be prepared to constantly research the same techs), detection is really bad (woodcamps that ignore the trees nearby, homes not developing because they don't see the clothier, which has what it needs, right next to them, the really odd happiness ratings, etc.)

Caesar 4 - Beautiful. It's exactly what you'd want: Caesar 3, but with improved graphics and more content. Here's hoping the company decides to do the same with maybe Emperor and Pharaoh.

Cities XL - Average SimCity clone. It kinda feels like playing a SimCity game with cheats, as you have to -try- to be in any danger. Just do as you please, build whatever. This seems nice at first, but it gets kinda boring.

Children of the Nile - Excellent city-builder, especially the enhanced version. I became almost instantly addicted. If you're a fan of Pharaoh, or of Egyptian history in general, pick this up.

SimCity Societies - EA really phoned it in on this one. There's a really poorly thought out system where buildings have pros and cons to them, but the pros and cons make absolutely no sense. Police departments lower authority levels whereas clock towers -raise- authority levels. What? -What-? It's not really a bad game, just a really poor sequel to something as awesome as SimCity 4.

So to sum all -that- up
Recommended:
Children of the Nile
Caesar 4

Not Recommended:
Spore
SimCity Societies
CitiesXL
Sims 3 (for now)
CivCity: Rome

Now, post your own reviews. Doesn't matter how old the game is, just as long as it falls within the simulation genre.

Pharaoh is the only city builder that I've ever really played, but it's a good one if a bit old. :)

Tropico. Best city building game ever

Agreed.

Best Tycoon game: Nothing beat the classic Rollercoaster Tycoon.

For all The Sims 2's quirks and LOADING TIMES, I liked the versatility of it over The Sims 3. Both are still way too easy to play. You have to try to fail at The Sims and even then you just die. There is no such thing as failure or bad luck in the world of The Sims.

This makes me want to install Simcity 4 since I have plenty of space to waste on things like that.

Anno 1602
City building in the Caribbean. You have to colonize multiple islands and construct elaborate trade/resupply routes. No annoying walker patrols like in Caesar.

Die Fugger 2
Awesome trading game set in the HRE spanning multiple generations. You have to open kontors in multiple cities, can take over castles and or robber dens, and make a career in either the church or in the government.

Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom is pretty awesome.

Dwarf Fortress - awesome if you can get past the ASCII art and cryptic UI.

I like everything by Firaxis. I thought CivCity: Rome was good.

One cannot forget about Transportation Tycoon :mischief:.

From what you wrote in the OP you havent played any above average citybuilders/tycoons/whatevers.

Transport Tycoon, Rollercoaster tycoon
And in chronological order: Pharaoh -> Zeus -> Emperor. With Zeus being the best of the 3.
Honorable mention to Anno1404

I was only rating the games I've played relatively recently, hence why most of them came out in the past few years.

Ah, i thought you were some 12 year old who's never heard of the older-ish city builders. :)

Anno1404 is from 2009 from the games i posted.

Yeah, I wanna try that soon.
But don't worry. I'm 19 (so still young, I guess) but I've been a big sim fan all my life.
Pharoah might be my favorite sim game of all time, though I'll confess Sims 2 is tied with it (Empire's right after both.)

Agreed.

Nobody mentioned Simcity 4: Deluxe Edition yet?

SC4 is actually a little too complicated for my taste at the moment.

Perhaps I will like it more later.

BTW I got Emperor ROTMK for like $5 5 years ago @ Wal-Mart :D

CitiesXL is actually a good game, it is vastly different from SC4 in game controls, making it a bit harder to run a city. But traffic is a big improvement and you have more control over your city as in choosing exactly how to design your cities. No more grids. :D Buildings and roads can now curve with the terrain, making the city blend in with the land around it. Makes for a beautiful mountain city.

Only downside I have is the trade section. Absolutely worthless. (though I love the Multiplayer aspect.)

Tropico 3 - Beautiful graphics, superior interface to the previous games, and a great sense of humor. However, it -is- fairly difficult, even at say 92% difficulty. There's also a wide selection of avatars (Castro, Che, Peron, Duvalier, etc.) as well as the ability to make your own dictator (I made Lincoln. and a pirate.)
