SirJethro's DyP II - "The Emperor's New Mod"

4000
From the start it looks like the hills to the east are the best spot so I move the Tribe there and found Gao. Scout ordered first. I love the Tribes movement.
Because we are Commercial we already know The Wheel and our Worker can road, so he’ll road the BG’s and then to the next city sites.
Researching Farming in 14 at 0gpt

3800
Gao Scout=>Scout
Joy of joys we seem to have a jungle to the south of us. That’s 2 for 2 on Jungle starts.

3600
Gao Scout=>Wiseman

3500
Gao Wiseman=>Tax Collector

3450
A Sioux Ranger and a Tibetan Tribal Guardian both appear close to Gao
Trade Tibet: The Wheel + 6g for Ceremonial Burial
Trade Sioux: The Wheel + Ceremonial Burial for Warrior Code + Farming + 12g
Trade Tibet: Alphabet + Farming for Mining + 7g
Not bad we got 4 techs and only sold 2. Set research to Caste System in 19 at +1gpt
We are equal to the Tibetans and up Alphabet and Mining on the Sioux
We have 2 sources of Iron very close and some Horses not too far away.
Did I mention a lovely jungle.

3300
Gao Tax Collector=>Warrior

3100
Gao Warrior=>Hardy Clan
Hardy clans cost more shields but only 1 pop and that’s all we have to spare. They can also cross and settle jungle which regular Clans can’t.

2950
The end of my reign. I found the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.

Notes
Its not looking good for us. We are on the northern tip of a peninsula with not much viable land to the north and a massive jungle to the south.
What we have: 2 sources of Iron, a visible Horse, 2 visible Elephants(not close) and some visible Sugar(not close). Two close neighbours, Tibet and Sioux, they found us after 10 turns.
What we don’t have is fresh water anywhere, I can’t see any. That’s going to screw us bigtime.

We can trade the Sioux Alphabet + 34g for Boat Building but we don’t need that yet. I chose Caste System because my test games have shown that to be one the AI is slow to get. Hopefully we can trade it for Domestication or some other techs on the way to Dynasticism.

Well we wanted a challenge and I think we got it.

Wow...yeah, tough start.

Make that 3/3 including my SP game. :p
The lack of fresh water is going to kill us here, though.

We should beeline it out of Chiefdom into Despotism (Dynasticism).

The spot where our unit is in the jungle will net us 2 rice and eventually elephants. A settlement north of the SW horses would get crabs as well :eek: We'll wait until further mappage before making a dotmap, though.

Unless Sultan jumps in before Thursday, I got it.

We need to be one track minded here guys: The Great Library. It is our only hope.

I have updated the annotated build queue file for improvements and wonders to match this build. Get it here if you're interested.

The spreadsheet is still in the pipeline.

Or 4/4 if you include my SP game.:p

About Despotism....
Thats when the Settler changes from Clan to Pioneer, and they now cost 3 pop. Only Gao will be able to build Pioneers until we chop a lot of jungle. Another city up north might be able to kick out one every once in a while.

Any cities on the plains won't be able to grow past size 2 until we drag irrigation up through the jungle if there is some fresh water down there somewhere. Its already a long way to bring it.
Harbors could let us grow but we'd have no production.

Great Library for sure, but where?

RobO, the link leads to CDG, but it says "the topic or post does not exist."

This is the formal I got it.

If there is fresh water to the south, we should think seriously about an early war, because lets face it, our lands suck.

Remember that when you switch to a Dynasty (no longer called Despotism) you no longer have to deal with the tile penalty so you will be getting more food. Some of those other cities might then be able to build a Pioneer.

Remember, we can't prebuild the Great Library because it requires a library in the same city.

Stupid me!
That's a link to a forum reserved for DyP testers. Try again - my revision might help. I don't seen to be able to load a file from my HD to a post here. Or I can send you a copy (email addy in profile).

The spreadsheet for build 05 is out now. If you can't get to the tester's forums at CDG you can send me an email and I'll send you a copy.

The road to Literature goes through Dynasticism, so I just set the goal to Lit.

Tibet asks us to move; we will - not much to see in Lahsa anyway.

[3] 2800BC: Tibet has Bronze Working; Sioux have Boat Building, lack Alphabet, and wants an extra 39. I don't think Tibet will value Boats much, so I'll wait until we get Caste System in 3.

[4] 2750BC: I find the Sioux to the south of Tibet.

[5] 2710BC: Both our rivals now have Boats and Brone. I can't help but feel I missed a trading opportunity back there, but I didn't think we could pull it off.

[6] 2670BC: Caste System researched; Masonry due in 7. I trade the Sioux CS for Bronze and their 1 gold; to Tibet for Boats & 12 gold.

[9] 2510BC: Hardy Clan -> African Warrior (1/1/1). Clan heads for Rice Paddies (not on auto).

[10] 2470BC: Find the southern edge of Sioux territory, although they have a clan headed further south.

Not a lick of fresh water on this continent so far. Plenty of Rice Paddies in the jungles, though.

77 + 1 gpt, Masonry in 3. Gao will build warrior in 3, grow in 19. :(

Da Save

Here's a preliminary Dot Map. I'm not psyched about it, but I'm pretty sure we should go for the Rice (red dot) as we have absolutely no fresh water.

Quokka, Since SJ can't play until past the weekend, I suggest you take it for another round. I'm going to round up some more help.

Cro...in other circumstances, I would say I totally agree with your dot map...but given this is an Emperor and we are hurting for land, should we go more ICS style and try to squish more cities in? We could surely use the production and it won't hurt our pop for another 2 eras.

Ouch, tough start without water. I'm surprised; that seems like it's a pretty big continent to be completely dry. I'll be interested to see how this one goes.

Kal-el...please, we need another member...feel free.
