SirJethro's DyP II - "The Emperor's New Mod"

I doubt the AI had a settler in the canoe since it would have to be unescorted. Good turn, though. If no one else calls a got it in the next few hours I'm going to take it. I want to keep this moving.

Question re: Garrisons.....do they heal the same way barracks do?

In the previous build, no. Don't know about now.

BTW, I never was able to get the new spreadsheet, and the Civilopedia is missing most of the new entries. RobO, or Isak, can you point me to it? Thanks.

Oops, so in my SP game I'm going around building garrisons and selling my barracks. That would be a bad thing, no?

Change of plans....I can't pick it up until Monday. Quokka...you out there?

Not necessarily; it also gives you the 25% bonus to defense from land attacks.

Best is to build the Arc de Triomphe, free garrisons. By then you may have a good enough railnet that you can heal badly wounded units in one or two cities with barracks, while the rest do fine in garrisons.

My style of play doesn't make the defense bonus worth overcoming the healing bonus. I'm usually very aggressive and try to stay on the offensive. I'm pretty good at minimizing the number of times my cities are attacked. Also, because I'm constantly expanding my borders, by the time I build a garrison, it isn't a border city any more, and isn't that useful. I want something that can quickly heal my offensive units and get them back in the field.

You're right re: the Arc. However, I'm playing a huge map Emperor game, and I lost it to the Zulu who managed to create an 80 shield city in the Medieval era. I also lost Encyclopedia. Grrr. I'm still winning though. :king:

doesn't the garrison heal your units? it should since it makes veteran units. It is basically an upgraded Barracks, i.e. a barracks with a defensive bonus.

I can pick up the game first thing tomorrow morning.

Got it. I'll have it back by the US AM for you Kal-el.

Cromag: the build 5 spreadsheet is available at http://www.cdgroup.org/forums/tbs/civ3/download.php?id=4452
That's an attachment to a post in the tester forum; no idea if that will cause any issues. If so, one of us could probably email it to you.

SJ: I always thought garrisons healed just like barracks since, as Kal-el points out, they are a veteran-unit-maker and AFAIK that flag is what enables fast healing. I must admit, though, that I've always just assumed it and never actually tested since all the major wars in my test games have been waged before I built the Arc for my free garrisons.

Notes
Investigate Chamdo for 92g
Garrison: 4 Spearmen, 1 Pioneer
Improvements: Aqueduct, Barracks, Colosseum, Harbor, Library, Monument, Port, Theatre
Size 12. Building a Temple due in 5.

When we invade Tibet I think we should raze this city. The only improvements that don’t have culture are Aqueduct, Barracks and Harbor. We get a free Barracks from the Sphinx. If we raze it at capture we’ll get at least 5 workers + Pioneer and we won’t have to deal with Resistors which we would just starve anyway. We should also move it onto the Elephants. We would reduce overlap with Tuskany and Dyed Pretty. It would give Tuskany sole use of the northern Rice and would also pick up the southern Rice that is currently not used.

Investigate Iyekundo for 24g (on Big Island)
Garrison: 1 Swordsman, 1 Spear, 1 Trade Ship
Improvements: Colosseum
Size 3. Building a Pioneer in 2 when pop grows.

We are going to need a few more troops over here to take this city. IOB and NBI both have barracks so rush in those cities. I think the Pioneer is to build a city on the southern tip, which would be perfect.

Investigate Leh for 78g
Garrison: 1 Crossbow, 3 Spears, 1 Tribal Guardian, 2 Pioneers, 1 Canoe
Improvements: Academy, Aqueduct, Bazaar, Colosseum, Forge, Library, Monument, Windmill.
Size 10. Building Leonardo’s Workshop due in 24. 19 of 24spt

This is where we should build the FP. It will be a production powerhouse and being more northerly than Oglala improve corruption in the centre of the island better. All there is to the south is Bear Butte. Wounded Knee is a non issue as it’s a fishing village. It may even have enough range to affect the Incan island a little when we take that. We also have a 50% chance at a free Bazaar, Forge and Wind Mill.

Tech
After Clockworks there are only 4 more techs before we have to research Education to advance. They are Army Tactics, Architecture, Perspective and Bridge Building. There is only 1 river on the map and that is in China so we don’t ever need that and it’s an optional tech. None of them are pressing, only Army Tactics offers and immediate advantage, Cuirassiers, but the Heavy Horsemen we have are more than enough for this island and 50 shields cheaper so steer away from that one until Tibet is gone. That leaves us Architecture to plod along with.

We should build many Sioux Workers out of the south. They are totally corrupt cities and once Malinese citizens get in there the Workers will no longer be free of maintenance.

Re: garrisons, I think they are working. They just seem to take 1 turn more than I'm expecting. May be me tho.

1100 AD - Dateline Quokkaton: So begins the reign of First Representative Kal-el el-Kan. The first official action of the new House of Representatives Majority Leader first official action was to train all Spearmen on Home Island with the more advanced Pike. This he said was essential for our continued success. "It is essential for our continued success that we do not leave our guard down just because we have removed the long hated Sioux from our land."
The Tibetan reaction to the Malise military build-up was mixed. High Priest Baadd Lama showed great concern in a recent press release saying, "We are greatly concerned about the recent training exercises that have been going on across our borders.” Meanwhile the common citizen on the street had a different opinion. “I have a different opinion than the Lama’s,” said a Tibetan citizen who wished to remain unnamed. “I hope the Malise come in here and kick out those theocrats running this country. They have to go!”
When asked to comment on such statements the Lama simply had “No Comment.”
The new House Majority Leader called all such concerns by the Tibetan leadership silly. “That’s just silly, we have always had an amiable relationship with our neighbors from Tibet. I only hope that they do not get any crazy ideas and start sending Elephant Riders across our borders. Any such action could be seen as an act of hostility, which we would be forced to respond to,” said el-Kan.

Meanwhile in Other News:
The Chinese War Galleys near Sir Jethro have turned north. All eyes on the West Coast follow them in anticipation.

Ethiopia’s Democratic Leader came to pay respects to the new Senate Leader yesterday. The two leaders discussed possible trade options. Overall the meeting was unsuccessful. “I thought they were here to discuss real trade issues, but all they wanted was our territory map. I gave it to them for their World Map,” said Kal-el el-Kan.

Horrible news rocked the diamond markets as word that we lost our supply of precious gems reached the Home Island. With the loss of their supply of Gems the people in Bear Butte and Wounded Knee begin to riot.

Even Worse, an emissary from the Theocracy of Siam brought word that the Siamese have inexplicably declared war on us! A Siamese Warrior assaults the island city of Wheat Thins. Thankfully the local militia is able to hold them off.

On a happier front, our Wisemen have discovered the secrets of Clockworks. They suggest that we use that knowledge to build great timekeepers in all our cities to help us stay on time and keep better track of worker production.

The great builder Kalindromedus attempted to build a mighty Cathedral but the walls were too high and they collapsed. “I will have to rethink the basic architectural design, this could take a while,” said Kalindromedus.

1110 AD – Dateline Quokkaton: In response to the riots in the south the House of Representatives passed emergency legislation ordering the luxury rate be increased to 20%. “It just seemed like a good thing to do,” said Representative Harrier. “We didn’t want to see similar riots in the northern cities.”

The workers outside of IOB have finished their road construction and are now working on building a mine in that same location.

Kalindromedus discovers the secret of Architecture and we can now build towering Mosques to Allah.

Meanwhile in a small studio somewhere a lonely artist is working on creating depth and Perspective in his paintings. Who knows maybe someday soon he will be successful.

Ethiopia comes looking for a Right of Passage Agreement. We agree in exchange for a trade embargo against Siam.

The Inca come calling saying they want to end our RoP agreement. We convince them to continue it if they give us 2GPT (down from the 3GPT they were giving us) along with a Trade Embargo and Military Alliance against Siam and we give them our World Map.

The Polynesians request a RoP. We agree to it as long as they honor the world trade embargo against the Siamese and give us all 14 gold from their treasury. They accept and we exchange world maps.

Siam does another amphibious assault with a Warrior against our Veteran Spearman in Wheat Thins. Our troops are victorious and attain Elite Status.

In other news:
Ethiopia and China have signed a military alliance against Siam. So now Ethiopia is fighting us and Siam and we are fighting Siam.

Our Pikemen in Tuskany put up a desperate fight against the Raging Tibetan Elephants. Down to their last few men these brave men held back the rampaging hordes saving the city for our glorious empire.

Inca and Tibet have signed a military alliance against us.

2000 AD Dateline the Front: Troop Movement. Wounded Soldiers are pulled back and fresh units take their place.

Notes: We are in a pretty pickle with China as our only Ally. We can get China to go to war against all the other nations if we give them Iron, our WM and 1350 GP. We have 5074 GP in our treasury.

We should be able to take Lhassa and Gartokh soon and then on to Chamdo. I concentrated mainly on building our industrial base. Kal-el is about to finish its Guild Hall at which point it should be switched over to build Leonardo’s Workshop.

Gettin' pretty hairy. I like your style Kal. I can take it manana morn. Anybody got it today?

I think I can squeeze in some turns tonight.

Well, everyone is at war with us except the Chinese, and we have 11 turns on our alliance left vs Siam. Our envoys to the others are sent back headless.

I hire a tax man in IOB, as it would riot otherwise. Rush shrine for 80.
Sikkim switched to pikeman. One pike from Little Bighorn dispatched there for riot control.
I now notice that Big Ben is no longer there (too unbalancing?). Iron Mountain Town Clock rushed for 120.
Wounded Knee is defenseless, switched to pike.
Marco Polo in Trading ship woken up, and sent south to a bit of unexplored land.
Leh set to starve.
I consider dropping lux rate, but we'd lose a couple of WLTKD's, so I leave it at 20%.

IBT: Siam is willing to pay us 75 for gold, but I say no for now. Two of their war galleys show up near Quokkaton.

[1] 1210AD: Quokkaton Mujahid -> Mujahid (this 3 move rules!). Kal-el Guild Hall -> Leo's in 20. Tuskany Mujahid -> Mujahid. Iron Mountain Clock -> Mujahid. Golden Blubber Temple -> Naval Base. IOB shrine -> pike. North Big Island Pike -> Forbidden Palace.

At Gartokh, we lose an elite HH, and kill two defenders. At least 2 more left. I reroute troops toward Gartokh, leaving Lhasa for now. Lots of troops need to be healed.

IBT: Golden Age ends. Time to Leo's is now 31, and income is 95gpt. :( An Incan canoe shows up near former Sioux territory, and one near Jungle Isle.

[2] 1220AD: Bear Butte switched from worker to pike. Dyed Pretty Town Clock rushed for 190. Jungle Isle Monument rushed for 30.
IBT: Incans drop off a cavalier next to New Jethrovia.

[3] 1230AD: Little Bighorn Tax collector -> Pike. Dyed Pretty Town Clock -> Mujahid. Golden Blubber Naval Base -> Carrack. Jungle Isle Monument -> Pike. I sell off all the improvements in New Jethrovia, as it will fall next turn. Pikes in Wounded Knee and Bear Butte rushed for 185. Saltpeter near Iyekuno pillaged.

IBT: China cancels our RoP. Mao says "we know what you did to Tibet," so I guess we committed some kind of crime when we attacked. New Jethrovia falls. :( An Incan Medeval Infantry is dropped off next to Wounded Knee.

[4] 1240AD: Quokkaton cranks out more mujahid. Bear Butte Pike -> Tax collector. Wounded Knee Pike -> Pike. Disband the worker outside New Jethrovia.
We take Gartokh with no losses, and capture 2 workers and 7 resistors. An elite HH is dispatched south to protect our Sioux cities from interlopers. Iron near Iyekuno pillaged.

IBT: At Wounded Knee, our pikeman gets redlined but defeats the MedInf. China builds Copernicus in Nanjing.

[5] 1250AD: Troops heal, and I place 5 attackers next to Lhasa. There are three attackers in Gartokh, healing. Two MedInf surround Iyekuno, but it has a a Gurka (3/3/1) defender fortified on a hill, so I don't think we'll win; it may need to be bombarded.

No one will see our envoy. Despite the damage we've inflicted on Tibet, they won't even give us Army Tactics for peace. 6 turns remain on our alliance, although our reputation seems to be hurting anyway. Anyone remember how that happened? Perspective in 15, +105 gpt. Leo's in 24, less if you starve it for a bit by working a hill about to be mined.

Sorry for losing New Jethrovia - those canoes are so slow and hard to see, that I didn't notice it until it was too late. Plus, I seriously doubt even having two spearmen could hold off their 6-attack Cavalier.

I'd say there was definitely a rep hit on the war declaration with Tibet:

...1160 AD...Tibet demands we remove our troops. We ignore them causing a war.
AFAIK, declaring war that way is treated just like a broken RoP. No idea if there was anything else that happened to hurt the rep, but that may be enough.

 Missed that.

So, was Big Ben removed because it was too powerful/too early?

Yes declaring war that way is the same as RoP Rape. Nobody said anything about what we did to the Sioux because nobody knew of the Sioux.

@Cromagnon.
Yes they removed Big Ben because it was too unbalancing. The AI didn't prioritize it properly, giving the human a huge advantage.

After we are done with Tibet one of our big cities should go for East India Company (free EI Trade office in every city, +50% Luxuries), +50% Lux in city where built.
Error EIC still has +1 ship movement flag

Kal-el, a question about the Slave Trade Wonders.
What is the effect of having more than one? They all grant the same building so I don't think you could get more than +25% production but what about the unhappiness? They are Great Wonders so won't be destroyed when captured. With all the Wonders that double the 'happiness' of Slave Markets later in the game, having more than one will be hugely problematic.
