Sixty Five Civilizations

Why not make a list of every civilization that exist or existed. That way, we don't offend anyone. So somebody should take an atlas and write down every country and then pick up a good history book (or a couple of them) and then write down every civilization or culture we forgot. After all that work, every other suggestion which comes next should be immediatly accepted. That's what I call epic (and the game would be too ;) )

The Tracians had very prosperous countries on the Balkan Peninsula! The problem was in their glory! They united and the new empire (ok, big country) simply was
too hard to govern (too much Corruption, Civil disorder, Mayor fled in panic and so on). They have never lived as one country so far. So they became easy target for their neighbours :)

We, Bulgarians, made the same mistake during the Ottoman Turks ivasion of Europe! We had 2 kings (or Tzars) and a despot. The feudals didn't like their kings and eventually only the peasants were concerned with the invaders! So we got invaded.
The turks did a great job as agressors! And shame on us, but this is history! Sometimes
you win, sometimes you lose!

I think you dont know real history.Because if you are logical person you can understand all events in reality. If ottomans did bad actions on you, Bulgaria cant declear their soverginity.Ottomans gave permissions about your religion and free living on bulgaria in addition turks and bulgars live with pleasure until bad days came. After 1800 AD you means Bulgars,Greeks,Armenians shoot on our(Turks) back.Yes, you are true.Sometimes you win, Sometimes you lose!!!

Peace in nation, peace in World!!!

The problem is then taking the time to give them
1. Leaders with traits that make sense (as well as a Leaderhead)
2. A list of cities
3. The Really Hard one, a UU that is balanced (along with graphics for that UU)

1+2 can be done easily enough by fans in mods
3 takes some game design work..ie the balancing of the unit [as can be seen in the Bulgaria thread where people are almost wanting cavalry as knight UU that requires no iron]

ALOT OF THOSE EVOLVED INTO OTHER LISTED CULTURES. overtime through the ages names change or cultures join. Quebec is a sub culuture of france. orignally controlled by france in the american revelutionary era. The indian tribes you named, one would do. They may speak different languages and have different beliefs but in all they're still the same culture. And with 85 civs like that in a game you'd end up with civilizations that are almost exactly the same.

FIN

I dont think civs like America, and Canada (and Quebec for that matter, dont know why u wanna separate yourself from canada) are Civs. They are Nationstates. Not civilizations. Decendants of the English and French civilizations by colonization.

Also, that talk about there being Swedes, Danes and Norse in the table, I believe he meant Norwegians with the Norse. And I also believe that all of these should be combined as the wikings or norse. Although we were different nations and still are, they were part of the same civilization I believe.

From having seen this debate repeat itself on this site, I think the best way to represent groups are by their strongest cultural influence. As I am from Crete and Chios, where I could demand Minoa or Chioti representation, but I believe that grouping all Greek civs under Hellenes or Greeks is just fine. The Major Group could represent the smaller groups. So Scandinavia for the main games and Norway-Sweden-Danes for a Conquest scenario.

On that note I say the funnest and most unique civs are:

America
Inuit
Canada
America
Confederates
Iroquis
Apache
Aztec
Hawaiian
Mayan
Inca

Europe
Celts
British
French
Netherlands
Germany
Scandinavia
Spanish

Im all for Catalonia too!

I was just mentioning the Catalan Grand Company's role in protecting the Byzantine Greeks from the Norman Franks. When the Normans and Venetians conspired to snatch Byzantine land, they took Peloponessos for Venice and renamed it Morea. Venice all captured the islands in the Aegean and Cyprus. And went on to capture Euboea, renaming it Negroponte.

The Catalan Grand Company were insturmental to protecting the Greek influence in the region. The Company consisted of Aragonese, Navarrese, Catalonians and other Iberic groups. For 100 years they had a country on the Hellas Strait (from Phokis to Thebes to Attica). They safeguarded the Greek Despotate of Epiros which lasted somewhat longer. But the Catalonian mercenaries protected and fought the Normans in Morea and the Ionic islands and Sicily. This allowed the Despotate of Epiros to concentrate its defense against the Normans at Dyrrachium, and they also led a campaign to recapture Macedonia from the Slavic invasions.

When Catalonia declared peace with the Normans over Sicily, they settled in Phokis and Thessaly, and worked for the Byzantine Emperor. As if to immitate their former leader Aragonese Admiral Roger de Lluria, the Catalan Grand Company ravaged Kerkyra (Corfu) as if to demostrate their military ability on a mission to fight the Seljuks in Anatolia. Admiral de Lluria was known for piractical impartiality to Mediterranean coastal towns and plundered any whether to be Byzantine, Latin, Venetian, Kerkyra, Patra, Cephallonia, Monemvasia, Naxos, Andros, Tinos, Kythnos and even Chios.

On a visit to the headquarters of Mihalis IX co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire with Andronikos II, Catalan leader de Flor was assassinated. Byzantines distrusted the Catalan mercenaries that fought and won battles against the Seljuks; but then would turn and attack the Byzantines on their own lines. The assassination led to the Catalan Grand Company setting camp at Gallipoli. From here they wrecked havoc on the Greeks and captured the castle of Kassandrea (on the left finger of Halkidiki, south of Thessalonica). From here they sacked the monasteries of Mount Athos and on to Thessalonica herself.

The Company had contacted its settlements in Thessaly-Phokis to declare war on the Norman Frank Duchacy of Athens (surrounded by Venetian Morea and Venetian Duchacy of the Archipelagos). Walter of Brienne, rather than fight them, hired them to capture all of Thessaly and Macedonia from the Greek Byzantines. The Company succeeded and instead of giving the land to the Duke, kept it for themselves and attacked the Duchacy of Athens. They remained in the region for 76 years, slowly losing their fighting spirit. Eventually their presence diminished and disappeared during the Ottoman conquests of the land.

I hope the Welsh will be included, if not i hope I am able too edit the neccassary files too include them myself. It's a shame it's overlooked so constantly, i read earlier in this thread describing the welsh as a "Sub-Culture", Sub-culture of what exactly, Wales existed Before England, ergo Well before the forced Union of England into Wales. I don't want too get political but arguments like that have absolutely no relevance to the Welsh people, culture or History. Wales (before being forced into the union) had it's own Parliament (that operated outside of the jurastiction of the English Parliament), has it's own language (which out of all the Celtic languages that do survive)has survived the best (compared too Scottish Alba and Irish Gaelic) with over 22% of the Welsh speaking it on a daily basis (this figure would be higher, but Welsh Language was not looked favourably after the Act of Union, and was only saved from further decline in the 1960's). I could go on and on about what the Welsh have been responsible for.(namely even setting up their own colony in Patagonia, where Welsh is still spoken there)

I'm sure i made my point though.
Cheers. :D
