SKNES: Architecture of Aggression

Update 5 Status:

Regions Done:
Britannia, Eastern Europe, Arabia, Persia, Africa
Regions Unfinished: HRE, Germany, Italy, Greece, Iberia

I'll just give a teaser - there is tons of blood in this update. Nearing TerraNES standards for bloodshed, actually.

Aiming for tomorrow, although I had a glut of schoolwork again. If not, definitely saturday.

Fitting that we began the 40K references, then. Blood for the blood god, and all that jazz.

Nearing TerraNES standards for bloodshed, actually.

:cooool:

EDIT TO ABOVE.

Fitting that this message started the peace argument.

Pshhhh, since when are the Andalusians interested in peace?

I would like to note that Francis II was on the front line of Aquitainian forces in the invasion of Epir. He should have plenty of experience killing heathens.

Enough blood to slake the thirst of Fenris and Jormungandre, Loki's Brood, thus pushing Ragnarok a Little bit further? I'm down.

Vilvaldi.

Parchment, Pristina, Rage Italic, French and Edwardian Script, and Blackladder are all decorative scripts which are still rather easy to read. The other ones are warped, curved messes.

What font did you use?

From SK on my Profile earlier.

unfortunately, I started work, then had to leave my house for 3-4 hours last evening.
I have just started work again; I'll get it up later today.

Update 5: An Imperium Rising (875 AD/257 AH)
Imperium Romanum Sacrum

It was an unsually cold day in Rome. The snow had fallen for days in amounts not seen in Italy for ages. Outside the residence of the Supreme Pontiff, the Emperor of the Franks, Clovis the third, knelt, begging for absolution of his cries for

But the Pope would do more than just forgive Clovis.

From that day, it was known; the Holy See would no longer accept the Hellenists in Constantinople as Emperors of Rome. The title now belonged to Clovis III of the Franks, a Christian, just as Constantine had been, in the city of Paris.

The new Empire was less of an Empire and more of an agglomeration of Catholic nations. But it was nevertheless powerful. Trade was streamlined with the adoption of a single Imperial currency.
(HRE Nations: +Economy)

Meanwhile, under the Holy Roman umbrella, the individual states prospered. Aquitaine, in an effort to get minorities to convert, performed a Smite of God, purging the Forn Siðr from its country. Trade prospered in Venice. Under charter from the Pope, much land was given to the Empire, and a new state – Pisa – created out of nearly nothing.
(Pope, Frankland: +Economy; +Pisa)

The union of Catholic states both intimidated the world – and united it. All across Europe and the Mediterranean, armies were readying up for conflict on a scale the world had not seen for centuries, if ever. The war for the Holy Roman Empire had begun.

The first moves were made by an alliance of Muslim nations known as the Black Scythes. Castilian armies, in a two-pronged attack, invaded France – not through the Pyrenees, but from sea. One Castilian fleet arrived at Nantes, along the border of Frankland and Aquitaine. The Aquitanian navy’s Atlantic fleet was obliterated in a naval battle by Castilian galleys equipped with a form of brimstone as a weapon, akin to the Greek fire of Byzantium.
(Castile: -1 Galley Group; Aquitaine: -2 Galley Groups)

The shore was raided, and villages and farmland up and down the coast and river burned. The Castilians came to Nantes itself, and found that it was poorly defended – most of the Aquitanian troops were defending Italy. However, the few that were at home defended gallantly, inflicting large casualties. Aquitanian cavalry attempted to break the attack, but it was unsuccessful. Although the bulk of the Aquitanian army was prepared to fight another day, the Castilians torched Nantes. Thousands died as the ruins of the city were swallowed up by flooding.
(Castile: -2 Irregular Companies, -1 Royal Swordsmen, -1 Crossbow Company; Aquitaine: -2 Irregular Companies)
(Aquitaine: -Economy, Castile: +1 Plunder)

The Castilians moved on to Bordeaux. However, they found that Visigothic legionaries serving Aquitaine, plus a number of Frankish soldiers, were defending the city, and they had too few troops to attempt an attack Bordeaux – and those who did perished. However, much of the west coast of France now lies in Castilian hands.
(Castile: -2 Swordsmen, -1 Royal Swordsmen)

Then came the attack from the north. It was a stroke aimed at taking Paris itself. The Castilians formed the bulk of the invasion force, landing near Cherbourg, but they were aided by Sons of Odin from Jutland – who had come to raid, and instill fear. The Franks found that although they had the defensive advantage, they were outnumbered – and fighting for their lives. The levying of peasants from the countryside was some help in fighting the Castilians, but for the most part the battles were bloodbaths – for both sides.

At Cherbourg, the Castilians landed in numbers greater than at Nantes, overwhelming the locals, and burning the city to the ground. They advanced to Orleans, laid siege to it. Due to the lack of archers on the Frankish side, the siege was brutal for the defenders, and at least half the city’s population starved to death. Nearly the entire city burned. By the end of the siege, Orleans had become a living hell. The stories told by the survivors rippled throughout Europe.

With Orleans secured, the Castilians moved on to frying a much bigger fish: Paris. But there were too few men left to press on, and despite all that would come from taking Paris, it simply could not be done, especially after attacks by Frankish cavalry destroyed much of the Castilian siege equipment. So the Castilians settled for the lands they already had, and installed vassal lords in control – and Castile became a feudal monarchy.
(Frankland: -Economy, -4 Levy Companies, -1 Swordsman Company, -1 Horseman Company)
(Castile: -> Feudal Monarchy, +1 Plunder, +Stability, -2 Swordsmen, -2 Royal Swordsman, -1 Crossbowman, -1 Siege Company)

Using their easily maneuverable longships and expert seamanship, the Jutes were able to sail up the rivers, and through fear, force the Frankish forts to capitulate. One notorious raid was the utter destruction of Le Havre on the northern coast; in its place, a camp was built, that began to grow into a small Jute town. Frankish counterattacks using their navy as well as horsemen were able to limit Jute advances, but with much of their army engaged against the Castilians in Brittany, it was not enough to hold them off altogether. And even that could not prevent one bold stroke by the Jute raiders.
(Frankland: -Economy, -Stability; Jutland: +2 Plunder)

That was the Jute campaign for Paris, the seat of the Empire itself. Sailing up the Seine, a Jute force comprising of Sons of Odin attempted to force the city to surrender – but the city refused. The Franks used their elite Visigothic legionaries to defend Paris, along with horsemen and an armada of galleys that was used to block the river. A few levies were used to defend Paris, but they were slaughtered if they dared exit the city’s walls. The Jutes tried to attack the city from the river, but the Frankish galleys, at high cost, held them off. The city itself was turned into a flaming bloodbath as large numbers of levies threw themselves at the Sons of Odin, holding them back. Although large parts of it were destroyed, Paris was saved a second time. Despite their turning back at Paris, large parts of Frankland remain under Jute control, especially in the Rhine valley.
(Frankland: -4 Levy Companies, -1 Visigothic Legionary, -2 Galley Groups)
(Jutland: -1 Crossbow Company, -2 Sons of Odin, -2 Longship Groups)

The Maghrebs of Cordoba invaded Aquitaine from the south. However, unlike the west, the Mediterranean coast and Savoy were well defended by the Aquitanians – and the fighting proved to be bloody. The fact that the Emir of Barcelona, a peaceful man, refused to take part in the invasion did not help matters.

The first Maghreb invasion was in the Languedoc area. However, when the Maghrebs came ashore, they found themselves under fire from Basque archers who had taken positions in forts in the Pyrenees, and unable to make any real advance. The Maghrebs never gained anything more than a foothold, and they eventually retreated.
(Maghrebs: -3 Swordsman Companies, -1 Horseman Company; Aquitaine: -1 Basque Archer Company)

The second invasion, near Marseille, was more successful. Aided by men from Badajoz, the Maghrebs came ashore to meet an irregular force of Aquitanians. The grass of the battlefield was quickly stained red, but in the end, the Maghrebs won out and established a foothold in southern France.
(Maghrebs: -3 Swordsmen Companies; Badajoz: -3 Irregular Companies; Aquitaine: -4 Irregular Companies)

The Armenians came to Rome, under the guise of helping the Pope. But a wary pope turned them away, refusing to let them into the Eternal City. Instead, they made camp at the old Roman port of Ostia, at the mouth of the Tiber, waiting. Frankish, Aquitanian, Pisan, and Papal troops all gathered, while the Armenians saw a fleet of Vandal raiders arrive to help them. The battle of the ages was to happen within view of the Eternal City itself.

The battle began with a charge of Vandal raiders towards the Holy Roman encampments. Crossbowmen fired their arrows, bringing down many of the raiders, but they were closely followed by Armenian swordsmen, and a volley of arrows from Vandal archers. A counterattack of Holy Roman melee troops followed, and in the ruins of an old Roman port, thousands upon thousands of men clashed – and died. The Holy Roman defensive advantage proved decisive however, and despite the great cost the Holy Romans won a pyrrhic victory. At the end of a brutal day of fighting, the Vandals and Armenians were forced back into the sea – and Rome was saved.
Casualties:
Frankland: 4 Irregular Companies
Aquitaine: 2 Swordsman Companies
Pisa: 4 Swordsmen Companies, 2 Crossbow Companies
Pope: 2 Papal Guard Companies
Vandals: 2 Vandal Raiders, 1 Crossbow Company, 6 Swordsman Companies
Armenia: 10 Swordsmen Companies

A group of trading ships flying Neapolitan banners entered Venice’s harbor, and instead of docking, rammed its way into the Venetian Arsenal, then exploded from naphtha. Their crews were attributed to be Savoyard and Genoan merchants, but their stories did not line up, and they spoke in odd eastern accents. Nevertheless, nobody knows where the ships actually came from. A small part of the Venetian navy was destroyed, but most was at sea, and most of the damage came in the form of lost coin and production.
(Venice: -Economy, -1 Dromon Group)

However, a new, far grander port was completed – the Golden Port, turning Venice into a center of trade and making up for the damage caused by the explosion in the Arsenal. Losing the Port would be a major disaster for Venice.
(Venice: +Economy, +Center of Trade)

The Venetians, using their Marinas, campaigned for the conquest of the Vandalic port on Corsica. The Marinas trapped the Vandal defenders against a wall of crossbowmen at the border, and the southern tip of Corsica was taken, with few casualties.
(Vandals: -Economy)

The Sicilian navy anchored outside Naples, offering the Elector-King the chance to capitulate. He refused. The invasion of Naples began, with the Sicilians attacking from the southwest, Taman from the southeast, and the Byzantines and Angorans from the east.

The Neapolitan army, split in half, was outnumbered on both fronts, but it nevertheless fought gallantly, as the crossbowmen inflicted heavy causalties on the invaders. In the end, Sicily gained a foothold in Naples, and in a battle in the Straits of Messina, the Neapolitan navy was destroyed.
(Sicily: -2 Swordsman Companies, -2 Irregular Companies, -1 Galley Group, +Economy)
(Naples: -2 Swordsman Companies, -2 Crossbow Companies, -3 Galley Groups, -Economy)

The Duchy of Taman, from the far east, surprisingly showed up in Apulia with a siege force, followed by a number of battle-hardened irregulars from the Caucasus. Due to the lack of Neapolitans defending, Apulia fell to Taman easily. Although the region has brought boons for trade, it has proven rather difficult to administer now that Naples is destroyed.
(Taman: -3 Irregular Companies, +Economy, -Stability; Naples: -2 Swordsman Companies, -2 Crossbow Companies

The Byzantine invasion from the east was larger in number, as soldiers arrived from both Byzantium and Angora. They brought along siege equipment, helping to speed up the process of taking cities, and only fought battles in open areas. The King of Naples refused to surrender, and in the end, threw himself into the sea rather than surrender. Rumors spread of him reappearing in Corsica, but he was never officially seen again. With the conversion of the Avars to Hellenism, the Avars were given control of Naples, as a Byzantine vassal. Trade once again flowed from Italy to Constantinople as a secure route to the east was opened up.

Northern Europe: The Fringe No More

The ever-increasingly tense religious situation in Brythonia finally erupted into violence when one of its kings, Uchel Brenin Arnallt, converted to Forn Siðr at the behest of a party of Skalds from Jutland. Naturally, the other kings did not take this lightly, and civil war broke out. The Catholics, desperately holding on to a small slip of land in north Wales, were kicked completely out of Brythonia. Many fled into neighboring Catavalu, watching Brythonia with a wary eye.

Despite early setbacks, the Forn Siðr armies under Arnallt rapidly expanded to place first all of Wales, then slowly Scotland, under their control. The Celto-Coptic kings were rapidly subjugated. A number of Celtic traditionalist kings managed to hold out, using hit-and-run tactics and clinging to some fortresses, but in less than a year, it was all over. Arnallt had himself crowned sole King of Brythonia.
(Brythonia -> Despotic Monarchy; -Stability)

That was the signal for Catavalu to declare war to restore Celtic rule to Brythonia, and Catevellauni armies marched for the border. A deal was made with Norse raiding bands based in Dublin, the Brythonians providing safe port and coin in return for raids on the Catavellauni coast. The raiders struck hard, ravaging the south coast of Britannia, and even raiding Camulodunum itself.
(Catavalu: -Economy, -2 Galley Groups)

The Brythonians made strikes against the advancing Catevellauni, compelling them to enter Brythonian territory. Then the pincer came. The Catevellauni fought hard, but the Brythonians surrounded them, and crushed the invaders, although a number were able to make it back to safety in a very disorganized retreat. Brythonia has begun pushing into Catavalu’s territory with raids. They were joined by Jorvik, who began zealously resettling and reoccupying Catavellauni towns and villages as the people flee southwards, and it seems that unless Catavalu is able to get aid, it is doomed.
(Catavellauni Casualties: 8 Tribal Warrior Companies; Brythonian Casualties: 3 Swordsman Companies, 1 Horseman Company)
(Jorvik: +Economy)

An aggressive, albeit costly, series of internal military campaigns within Dublin’s territory established firm control over all Ireland, eliminating issues caused by non-subjugated chieftains and warlords in the south and north. With Ireland firmly under control, trade began to flow – and an economic boom is just over the horizon.
(Dublin: +Stability, +Economy, -2 Axeman Companies)

Jute sailors came across an island in the far north, an island made of ice, and thus it was named “Iceland.” With that, a colony has been established on Iceland, albeit small and stagnant. The land is too cold and rocky for suitable farming, and does not make a viable trading post, so time only will tell the fate of this small colony.

In Jutland, Christians within the country, and its French possessions, were declared “Kammerat,” awarding them protection in return for paying tribute to the Forn Siðr rulers. This has increased the Catholics’ tolerance of Jute rule, and provided the government some extra coin for spending.
(Jutland: +Economy)

Thanks to Holy Roman diplomats and coin, some of the Thuringians were convinced to abandon their old ways and convert to Catholicism, including the King himself. This has not gone well with some of the traditionalists in Thuringia – but it is done. Recently, there has even been talk of asking to join the Empire.
(Thuringia: -Stability)

The East: Lands of Wars and Peaces

With Kyiv under Polish control, it was a time to rebuild. A New Kyiv was built next to the old one, using salvaged materials from the destroyed city. A grand altar to the Romuva pagan gods was the centerpiece of the new city, as well as a river port and new houses. In Gdansk in the north, docks are being built to attract trade along the valuable Novgorod-Jutland trade route, and to tap into Jutland’s trade.
(Poland: +Economy, +Stability)

Novgorod itself flourished with trade. Funded by Novgorod’s lords, settlements have been popping up on the other side of the Baltic Sea, in a land called Sveringe by the locals. The settlements have proven their worth. All in the meantime, plans are underway for a grand harbor in Novgorod, outclassing even Venice and Constantinople in its size and grandeur.

After several decades of settlement, Armenia and its new vassal Taman finally tamed the Caucasus, bringing it completely under their control. Taman sought to become a trading nation, and has even gone so far to set up a trading post on the island of Skye, in the British Isles, to tap into the North Sea trade. Time will tell what this becomes.
(Armenia, Taman: +Economy)

The Uyghurs, after several years of little but harassment of the Hormuzi and Abbasid borders, came under a control of a new – and far more ambitious – Khan. The new Khan, young and aggressive, led a truly massive campaign into Abbasid lands to sack Baghdad. They ravaged the countryside, and easily wiped out the few Abbasid regiments they faced.
(Abbasids: -Economy, -2 Swordsman Companies)

Then, the horsemen came to a plain northwest of Baghdad, and here it was that the fate of Islam itself was to be decided. Against a massive combined army of Baghdad, Hormuz, and Aleppo, the rapidly moving Uyghur horsemen charged.

The horsemen overwhelmed the first line of defenders, mostly Abbasid swordsmen. The defenders had taken cover behind shields, but they were ineffective against the might of the rampaging horse archers. The center of the line was breached, and a bloodbath quickly ensued. But as the Abbasid swordsman, covered by crossbows, retreated, a small force of Hormuzi and Zengid cavalry attacked from the rear. Although they were quickly dispersed, the move distracted the Uyghurs just enough to allow an Abbasid counterattack. A massive line of arrows was fired at once, covering a risky charge of swordsman, chopping the legs off the Uyghur horses. The Uyghurs fell in droves, and the Khan was killed. Islam was saved.
Casualties:
Uyghurs: 6 Horse Archer Companies
Abbasids: 4 Irregular Companies, 6 Swordsman Companies
Zengids: 1 Swordsman Company, 1 Horseman Company
Hormuz: 1 Horseman Company, 1 Irregular Company

With the Uyghur Khan dead, large numbers of border drives cast off the yoke of the Khanate and left. Infighting meant that there was little anyone could do to stop that. Many of the tribes along the shores of the Caspian have pledged allegiance to either the Turks under Abbasid jurisdiction or the Emirate of Hormuz.
(Uyghurs: -Stability)
(Hormuz: +Economy)

The Zengids continued expanding east, out of Palestine and deeper and deeper into Arabia. While expansion has been for the most part peaceful, there have in recent years been a number of minor border clashes with not just the Arab tribesmen of the interior, but also the men of Hijaz. Having recovered from its earlier troubles, Hijaz has claimed the Arabian interior as its territory – disregarding the Zengids who have already settled there. The Zengid Emir continued to fund development of artisan crafts within the Emirate’s cities – something which continues to boost economic growth.
(Zengids: -1 Swordsman Company, +Economy, -Stability)

The weak situation in the Fatimid Caliphate reached a breaking point and collapsed, leaving the Caliph virtually powerless. Rebellions sparked across the country. However, thanks to help from a Zengid army, the rebellions were put down, although at great cost. Axum started eating away at even more land. The Fatimid trade economy is all but destroyed thanks to the extended period of chaos. But the Caliph is safe, the Fatimid dynasty’s roots firmly planted again, and the Caliphate can start recovering.

The Gupta Empire decided the time was ripe to establish imperial possessions across the sea, and it launched an invasion of Oman, a weak target ripe for picking. With ease, the Indians took Muscat and most of the north of Oman. The Omani imam fled to Yemen with most of his army, and a combined army stands prepared to counterattack; in fact, Yemeni ships have already engaged the Indians in the Arabian Gulf. In the meantime, the Gupta Emperor has been able to establish firm control of Oman – and, rumor has it, Oman is the first step in building a grand Hindu Empire to span the seas.

OOC:

@Everyone: If you have questions, orders are not the place to send them for the simple reason that I don’t read 90% of the orders I get until I actually do the update. If you have questions, either a separate PM, or better yet AIM or #NES when I am on, would be the place to ask.

Also, for your vassals (if you have vassals), you can set some priorities as to what you would like them to do, and direct spending – however, they may not follow your orders to the letter.

I would also like to add/clarify that archers are near-worthless in sieges.

As a final note, a fun fact: ð in Forn Siðr is a thorn, and is pronounced with a –th sound, so if anyone actually cares about this it should be written Forn Sithr, not Forn Sidr.

@Thomas.berubeg: Your color in France is killing my eyes:p
But other than that, I couldn’t build any siege units for Jutland, they cost 2 EP each, not 1.

@People who were defending Venice: Because nobody actually invaded Venice, I just moved all those troops you had put there to defend Rome.

@People who attacked Naples: The regions you were attacking all overlapped, so I just divided Naples like so. If you want to redivide it, I’ll do that.

Inform me of the stat errors.
