Wow, is this game ever slow. I am roughly 25% above the recommended requirements in RAM and CPU speed, and I am running on low detail at the lowest res (1024x768). I have a frickin GeForce 6800. When you put the mouse over a box or unit, it takes a full second to display the information. There is about a second delay when moving a unit anywhere. Scrolling around the screen is ridiculous, when I move the cursor away from the border, it still keeps scrolling for a second or so.

What gives?

hmm Im beginning to think that i should cancel my preorder.

I only have 256ram, GF4 Ti4200.

Runs fine for me. GeForce 6600GT.

Make sure other programs are closed when running it. It looks to be fairly ram hungry, which could cause swapping if you aren't careful.

Mine runs slower as the game progresses. I have a 2.4ghz and 512RAM with a 128 radeon 9200 card.

I wonder what the bottleneck is moreso going to be in this game... the RAM or the Processor speed or the video card.

Funny how Doom III and World of Warcraft run great on this system.

Yet Civ 4, a turn based strategy game, can't even respond to the mouse hovering over a unit.

Weird.

threr has to be some other issue with your computer you should be running it with no problem, i have a geforce fx5200 and that is just one tick below rec but i ran pirates pretty good and age of empires good and they all have simm graphics engine

So you are telling me that when you move the mouse over a button, it highlights immediately, or when you move it over terrain, it displays what terrain it is immediately etc? It doesn't delay for a full second? Damn...

Yeah mine is kinda slow, too.
I was going to recover my computer so that I only have things I need, games that I will play, so that there's lots of RAM room for Civ4, but haven't been able to this week.
That being said, the graphics are the bomb.

Turn off some of those processes mucking up your system(s) guys.
(just assuming--no offense intended)

Go figure I thought after playing a few hours; (only to stop and change a sound setting to dolby digital :P), I figured I would see pages of kudos to firaxis for everything I've seen so far from the opening intro...amazing imho. I felt lucky to see the game run with my older cpu (AMD T-Bird 1.4) but to my delight am running the game trouble free with everything cranked...not slow at all--everything is very responsive etc etc...feels like one of the more polished pieces of software I've had the pleasure of trying lately tbph.

I have a 6600GT too, and it's instantaneous. (1280x1024, 4xAA, High on everything)

not exactly your card is more than sufficent enough to run game with out a problem there are some threads on here where people say there running it with a geforce 2 64 mb without a problem the requirements for this game are not really that beefy copared to other game on the market card go figure

I don't have any 'processes' screwing up my comp. Can anyone tell me why Doom III and WoW would work great (with detail turned down to medium settings) but Civ4 absolutely crawls (with detail on absolute rock bottom)?

Ta. Do you think having 1 GB RAM instead of 512MB has a significant impact on overall performance?

Yes. At least if you want to play on anything bigger than the small maps and/or want to run other programs in the background.

On larger maps when loading up a game, scrolling around, or switching to world view, there is a huge difference between 512MB and 1GB that I've noticed. Not really much difference when stationary. I still end up using quite a bit of pagefile on a Huge map later in the game with 1GB even though (~700MB used by CIV), so all the way up to 2GB is probably going to be paying off with better performance.

Is it the same regardless of map size?
