Small bomb hits NY Times Square

An explosive device has caused minor damage to a military recruitment centre on New York City's Times Square.

The centre was empty and no-one was injured in the pre-dawn blast, which smashed a glass window.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the bombing did not appear to be an act of terrorism but the investigation was in its early stages.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the attack on the recruiting office was an insult to US forces personnel.

"The fact that this appears deliberately targeted at the recruiting station insults every one of our brave men and women in uniform stationed around the world," Mr Bloomberg said at a news conference.

He said New Yorkers would not be intimidated. "New York City is back and is open for business... People are going about their business, shopping, working and sightseeing."

Could this be the first shot of a civil war? Or perhaps a lone anti-war protester that's crazy enough to think peaceful demonstrations don't go far enough?

THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!

Hehe sorry I was recently reading about John Titor and the comic DMZ earlier. :D But yeah I wonder what the bomb was about.

Why would this not be considered an act of "terrorism," according to white house officials? Because there is no proof an Arab did it?

Yup thats exactly it. Has nothing to do with a military target. Its about race.

Sounds like terrorism to me too. Maybe since nobody got hurt....

It's a military recruitment center in the middle of Times Square. I'd call it terrorism, plain and simple.

Thats nice. But its a military target plain and simple and by definition does not constitute terrorism. It doesn't mater where it is located. Just like the Pentagon was a legit military target. The only factor that made it a terrorist attack was the plane full of people.

Actually, I think they want to find out what caused the explosion first before jumping to conclusions. Why don't you telephone them and let them know exactly what happend sense you seem so certain.

U.S. Code of Federal Regulations:

Terrorism is "...the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives" (28 C.F.R. Section 0.85).

If it quacks like a duck...

Since when do you trust the "quacking" coming from the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations?

What he said.

I beg to disagree. Military targets can also be the targets of terorism. And the definition of terrorism is indeed vague and wide enough to include military targets.

Depends on how easily terrified the military in question is.

 You dont think the citizenry can be 'terrirfied' by what happens to the military on our own soil?

Or perhaps you just couldnt resist making an irrational comment simply to take a swipe at the military?

Smooth; if its the French, well....

Anyways, I think this is some Code Pink nutjob who got heartened by Toledo and California. Whatever. As long as nobody got hurt.

Why would I be terrified about what happens to our military? We give them a big enough budget that they should be able to handle what's thrown at them. Certainly no need to go Code Red over Code Pink.
