An you decided that how?

A word is any combination of letters which people use to describe an idea. Language has always evolved and always will, people who think that the english of 10, 20 or 50 years ago is the 'true', 'perfect' english are quite simply mistaken. It is no purer than the english which came just before it or just after it.
Let woot be a word.

This scares me...

2007 is wOOt..does this mean 2008 will be pwnd?

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year 2007
Thousands of you took part in the search for Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year for 2007, and the vast majority of you chose a small word that packs a pretty big punch. The word you've selected hasn't found its way into a regular Merriam-Webster dictionary yet—but its inclusion in our online Open Dictionary, along with the top honors it's now been awarded—might just improve its chances. This year's winning word first became popular in competitive online gaming forums as part of what is known as l33t ("leet," or "elite") speak—an esoteric computer hacker language in which numbers and symbols are put together to look like letters. Although the double "o" in the word is usually represented by double zeroes, the exclamation is also known to be an acronym for "we owned the other team"—again stemming from the gaming community.

Merriam-Webster's #1 Word of the Year for 2007 based on votes from visitors to our Web site:

1. w00t (interjection)
expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"

exactly, :w00t: for a late christmas present..

which reminds me.. whats with the name change present idea gone?

And what about that :pwned: smilie that was lost in the depths of the last thread?
pwned.gif

And yes, it can be :pwned: rather than [pwned]. Know why? :please: is proof!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it's a bit of a skewed sample, isn't it? Obviously, internet people are going to favour words like "w00t"... Ask people in the street and you won't get the same response at all.

This reminds me of the wonders of the world discusion from earlier in the year, people with internet access and so motivated can cause skewed (pressumably) results. I never new about the acronym, I just though it was a cheerful type of sound like Woohoo! or such. They are strange when typed or written. :woohoo: is better as a smiley, but w00t is about the same expression, maybe modify :woohoo: to say w00t, or just not bother, but we don't need two of the same.
