Well of course there is always Oblivion and Morrowind, though those are very, very different genre. The Fallout series is also superlative.

I don't know why, but I just didn't get into Distant Worlds. It is clearly very well done, exceptionally well supported, and there is a wonderful community in the Matrix forums. There are also good mods. If the idea of a 4X space game is at all appealing, I'd recommmend it!

Europa Universalis 3

EU3 probably is the most logical alternative to Civ. I've played EU (and the other Paradox games) to death.

But honestly, playing EU3 sometimes feels a bit like helping my wife move the refrigerator: while there eventually may be a reward in it for me, odds are I'll be too tired to enjoy it.
