So much for offshore drilling: Oil rig explodes off Loiusiana

nice one :goodjob:

Yes! Anybody they could prosecute is just gonna be a scapegoat to deflect attention from the Obama's failure in this situation!
Finding a scapegoat is not gonna clean up the oil. So whoever is responsible should just get a "free ride".

And since there was zero, zip, zilch, that Obama could have done under any circumstances, you think that that is an excuse for you're stereotypically conservative hatred of personal responsibility?

There are things that Obama could have done to prevent this that even I'd be cool with. I never let Bush off the hook after Clinton gutted our ability to combat terrorism, why are all you lefties on the board letting Obama off the hook when he had a year and a half to generate meaningful change instead of perpetuating the status quo?

Obama could have simply gotten out of the way. The state and local governments affected by the spill want to build sand berms off the coast to protect the sensitive wetlands. Those artificial barrier islands would trap the oil, which can then be shoveled into garbage bags and hauled off. Obama sat on the request for over two weeks and is still sitting on it after meeting with state and local leaders. (Louisiana is going ahead anyway based on a ruling from the state attorney general).

Obama could also take the UAE up on its offer to send a supertanker for cleanup. The tanker is on standby and Obama just has to give the word. (Another way this is Obama's Katrina--Greece offered us a cruise ship to use as housing and Bush said no, then paid Carnival millions of dollars for the same service).

The Army Corps of Engineers doesn't know that the sand dune idea will help or make things worse. And lack of tankers has nothing to do with sucking up the oil. The ability to suck up the oil has to do with not sucking up the oil. As in, how the hell do you do it? If it could be done, it already would be.

BP are pumping oil at last

Only 1,000 barrels a day at the mo, but they are going to keep stepping it up bit by bit.

Here's to hoping it works. I think there are better diamond tipped saws that what they were using. There are companies that specialize in that type of tool. They probably should have crowd sourced a bit more to find the perfect cutting tool to make a clean-cut. This hack-job might work as a temporary stop-gap until the relief wells reach their targets.

It's important to note that it's not a long term fix.

You know George Washington warned us about foreign entanglements. And look what we've done. We've allowed foreigners to entangle. and what have we gotton? Fun time on the sand? Nooooooooo!
:gripe: :yuck: Tar balls on our beaches!!!!!!!! :yuck: :gripe:

Send them back to Britian I say.

You know George Washington warned us about foreign entanglements.
First, foreign entanglements did not equal foreign commerce; Washington in that address stated that we seek commerce with them without political entanglements.

Second, the U.S. has $3 trillion in direct investments overseas, including hundreds of billions of dollars invested in Britain. Are you going to pull out all of our investments in Britain over an oil spill that could have just as been as easily caused by an American company operating in the North Sea?

Third, remember that it was the Confederacy that sought the alliance of European powers during the Civil War.

BP have stopped the oil flow - but it may start again if there is a hurricane or pressure build up.

Also, oil well capped. Home in time for Christmas and all that. Right?

Yeah alright fine you win the points.

... wait, did someone just admit defeat on the internet!

The oil industry finally manages to be reasonably competent 85 days after the oil started gushing out. Yay!

Meanwhile, EU officials are urging a ban on deep-water drilling until they can reassess the risks. I can't wait until some conservatives in this forum start suggesting they must hate freedom and liberty to take such steps against the persecuted oil companies, as they did with Obama.

BP will now have an advantage in deep water drilling because they a team who have stopped such a deep water spill.
