I started a new campaign (first time player) as the Aztecs. It's about 560AD, and I've got about 4 settlements, and one on another continent next to the fountain of youth...it's in my borders, but should it have been right up against it?

I am getting some things from my city states that are allied with me that they want to get rid of another one....problem is...I get all my guys up there (like maybe 3-4), and they get wiped out!

Is there a thing I need to do to upgrade them or are they automatically upgraded when I get to another age. I'm in the Middle Ages right now.

I've got good income, a ton of workers always farming, I've bought tiles to expand etc. Even have 2 world marvels (The Great Lighthouse, and The Great Library)

Any thoughts on the military?

Are they still warriors? Every era you can upgrade your units (most of the time anyway) to a more current military depending on whether you've researched the "weapon" techs or not.

For example once you research Iron Working, you can select a warrior and a little button will appear in the commands that wasn't there before; it'll have a star with 3 chevrons in the back. You have to send your units back to friendly territory (you own it, or an allied city state does) and spend a little bit of gold to upgrade. C:

The good thing for you is that if you upgrade a lot of Jaguars they keep their awesome Jag bonuses.

Yeah. Warriors archers calvary etc. I did not see that and I've researched steel Lol. So I guess I need to get in that.

Fountain of Youth (FoY) needs to be in your borders for the +10 happiness, just like you describe your situation. Your military units need to travel 1 tile next to the FoY to receive a (permanent) promotion of an extra +2 HP healing.

I'm not sure why your units are 'wiped out', so it is difficult to give advice. Are you still fighting with your warriors? You should hook up resources like Iron and Horses (buld improvement with your workers on them) to build better units like Longswordsman, Horseman, Catapult, etc. As a first time player, you probably lag in technology and other civs have a stronger military.

When you are able to build stronger units, you can also upgrade your existing units if they are in friendly border.

If your units are wiped out on the ocean, it is because units are defenseless on water, so protect them with ships

Okay. Well U haven't upgraded my units. I have a decent navy and they have leveled up with attacking bandits. But I haven't run into any enemy ships other than those. Now granted I am playing on a small map on an easier level to start. So I knew I wasn't doing something right with them

If your trying to capture cities, they recently buffed them and now its pretty hard to take them without siege weapons.

Someone is WRONG on the Internet! :p. Well, you're partly correct. The promotion is "Double Heal Rate" - exactly like the Persian Immortal - so if your unit is in a position to gain +1 health/turn (ie. outside of friendly territory), they will gain +2 health; if they can gain +2 health/turn (inside friendly territory), they will gain +4 health; if they can gain +3 health/turn (inside one of your cities) they will gain +6 health; and I expect if they could gain +4 health (inside one of your cities with a medic nearby), they would gain +8 health.

you also need recources for some upgrades. Take the tutotial if you didnt know that. But the thing that worriers evolve to without recources the soonest,(i think) is a pikeman
