So, What have You named Your Starships?

Destroyers:
-Guardian destroyer (armed with mk. III lasers)
-Warrior destroyers (armed with mk. III plasma weapons)
-Jabberwacky destroyers (armed with Doom rays)

Crusiers:
-Thunder Crusier (armed with photon topedeos mk. III)
-Thunder II Crusier (armed with quantum torperdeos mk. III)
-Cahadhri Crusier (armed with black hole erupters)

Battleships
-Mammoth Battleship (armed with Singularity driver mk. IV)
-Python Battleship (armed with Quantum Driver mk. III and Phasers)
-Kraken Battleship (armed with Black Hole Guns and Doom rays)

and my superduper Thorin class battleship whichh had loads of Black hole guns and droom rays one type when I had designed when I had an absoleutly huge minitarisation bonus and a ship I have'nt used since.

"Jabberwocky"

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

'Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!'

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

'And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Hello everyone. Seen this topic up at Paradox Interactive and thought it'd be nice to know "what wild names have you given the things and what are they like? Did you call something the dreadnought class and it got mauled? did you make something you thought would be duff , named it firefly and it annhilated everything?"

I myself am still on the lookout for good name themes :)

. . . however it would not convey any info about the starship it describes.

my GC2 starship names were extremey functional in order to identify them from the 100 other (!!!) similar starship designs.

my system is similar to damunzy, only a bit wordier so all offensive ships, eg, would group together in the ship list.

I use very logical names.

Weaponed Ships:
Tiny = T, Small = S, Medium = M, L = Large .... most games end by this point.
Beam = B, Gun = G, Missile = M
Shield = S, Armor = A, Point Defense = P
Speed = S

Non-Weaponed Ships:
Troop Transport = TT, Constructor = Con, Colony = Col, Freighter = F
Speed = S, Range = R, Troops = T

So, a Medium Weaponed ship with 4 points in Beam, 2 points in Armor, and a 4 Spd would be labeled thusly:
M-B4A2-S4 <- Main Name (can't fit as much as the description because the font is bolded)
Med-Bea4Arm2-Spd4 <- Description (can fit more in here since the font isn't bolded)

A Constructor with 7 Spd and 1.0 Range:
Con-S7R1_0 (have to use underscores instead of periods)
Con-Spd7Ran1_0

A Troop Transport with 7 Spd, carrying 2 thousand Troops, and has a 1.0 Range:
TT-S7T2_0kR1_0
TT-Spd7Tro2_0kRan1_0

I don't normally put range in for Weaponed Ships and Non-Weaponed Ships don't normally have weapons or defenses.

such as "stingray 10L12 A3D4", a codename incomprehensible except to its designer (me).

btw, it means offense class "stingray" (as opposed to offense class "stingtank", etc)
with a speed of 10, sensors 12, attack level 3, and defense level 4.

however even this does not describe the ship completely since the offense and defense TYPE are not described (ie, laser or missile, shield or mass deflector).

hence I had to add that tedious detail in the ship description that appears under the ship name.

==========================

my suggestion to improve GC2 is to have an option to TURN OFF custom ship design at the start of the game.

it would also be less aggravating if at the start of the game one type of offense/defense could be selected, such as "laser/shield".

these two simple start of the game options would reduce the steep GC2 learning curve and personally would tempt me to start playing the game again.

as it stands I refuse to add yet another ship design to the 100+ I have already created and so I have stopped playing GC2.

I use number/letter codes only when playing with the :borg: Yor Collective, so light fighter version one is LF-1. With humans I use names of constellations and stars, like Orion and Sirius.

My moost treasured(used to be) was my Super Star Destroyer(it worked out pretty well, until I came accross a Yor fleet)

my weakest ships are my TIE Fighter class, along with X-Wing.

the Heaviest ship in my arsenal(slong with being able to carry 1k troops) is the Battlebarge, one ship along is enough to conquer an entire system(provided I have enough troops)

So far I've only played one game, and in that game I've only made two ships which I upgraded with new stuff when I needed :p But I'll share anyway.

The "blade" was a small ship with two laser guns on it (don't remember the spesific things) and smart flack because my rivals seemed to be into explosive things. It went through various developments, generally every time I could fit on more firepower or defense until it was the "blade V" which had two lasers, 2 armour rating in each type and also a missile thing because I seemed to be the only one who had EMP tech.

The "Armada" was made when I finished the medium hull research half way through the games single long war (there were effectively three wars but there were barely two turns between them. I had built up such an economy surplus through selling defense against weapons I didn't use I could simply buy more ships in a couple of turns than the rest of the races had combined) and was armed with 2 defense in all areas, three laser weapons and two railguns. After I realized the enemy was using absolutely no point defense I upgraded to the "Armada II" which had missile weapons instead of railguns as well as a longer range thanks to a better miniaturisation tech.

I won too quickly to really need anything else, although I probably made some glaring mistakes in design because it was my first game XD
