So wut's in yer custom music folder, then?

Taste in a particular type of pop music doesn't fade with time IMO. What does fade with time is its presence in the mainstream. There are millions of people who favour 70s or 80s music who weren't even part of those generations. But for them to enjoy their music they don't rely on the mainstream channels (radio and tv etc.) but rather the more niche channels (dedicated night-clubs, classic radio stations, music cds etc.)

This, is the crux of the off topic discussion in this thread. I am like this too. I am only 28 years old, and most of my favorite music is by bands that broke up or were dead before I was born, or very shortly there after. Is this the norm for any generation? No. I am definately in the minority in my enjoyment of classical, folk, jazz, blues, and 60s & 70s rock, but it isn't such a minority that the music and performers will die and fade away within a generation. Much of my musical taste was cultivated by my dad's extensive collection of vinyl albums, just as my 2 year old son already loves to rock out to Jimi Hendrix and Metallica.

Wow. There are some interesting choices in this thread.
Nothing at all, I play with sound off ;). Believe me, once I upgrade my machine that is going to change in a hurry, although I'll probably leave the BTS music on for a while just because it's been a while since i've heard it.
Not that you'll get to hear much. You play so fast, you'll only get one or two songs in. :p

Hmm. I had no idea you could do this. I generally play pretty quietly but I do have a nice setup for sound in my gaming room. Perhaps I'll set this up. How do you do this?
I use Winamp in the background now, rather than the custom music folder. I found that the custom folder music kept stopping around the mid-game, and I couldn't get it back without restarting the game and resetting the audio options. It was a big nuisance. If your machine has enough ooomph, it should run Winamp or something else in the background just fine. The trick is getting the volume balanced. Oh, and don't forget to disable the in-game music. It sounds pretty weird otherwise.

No apology necessary. The whole point of these things is discussion, isn't it? If someone brings up something interesting that relates to what we're talking about, that just makes it a much better thread for all of us, IMHO. :)

@PoM: I never figured you for a James Brown fan. :)

my custom music folder doesnt work

I normally play with the sound off.

Were I to do custom music, I'd be tempted to give Ragnar "The Immigrant song "or "No Quarter " by Led Zeppelin, and I think I'd give Shaka "Baby elephant Walk " by Henri Mancinni, just for laughs and giggles as he shakes his fists.

currently:
The Essential Mixes of 2008. Right now : Adam Freeland's 2008/03/01

Little Rave Child in me has always played my electronica during civ games since civ 2 way back when.

Hendrix - The wind cries Mary, who knows, 51th anniversary
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing, Telegraph road
U2 - One
Bob marley - Kaya, Babylon by bus
Lee Skratch Perry - Tell me something good
Georges Brassens - Supplique pour être enterré à la plage de Sète

Cheers (I selected 10... they are more )

Powderfinger - Neil Young
Rockin' in the Free World - Neil Young
Cortez the Killer - Neil Young
Istanbul Not Constantinople - TMBG
The Mesopotamians - TMBG
James K. Polk - TMBG
Whos Going to Win the War - Hawkwind
Dead Dreams of the Cold War Kid - Hawklords
Uncle Sams on Mars - Hawkwind
Farmer John - Neil Young

With the exception of Farmer John they all at least vaguely fit with Civ but I love that song too much to leave it out

Winamp is your friend! (And it's free, too!) :goodjob:

I saw this and thought of the Tragically Hip's "Locked in the Trunk of a Car" for when Cathy pops up. I have no idea why.

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing, Telegraph road
I'm a little too young, I think I was only 11 or 12 when the CD came out, but Love Over Gold was the best discovery that I ever found in the shops. Telegraph Road is a masterpiece.
Cheers (I selected 10... they are more )
There are always more. :)

Birdman,

Not to change the subject, but I used to spend a lot of time on the original "Napster". It was the greatest website ever for a music lover. It had every piece of music ever recorded, anywhere in the world, at any time, in any medium. But the evil Record Companies did away with Napster, and you can only download what they currently sell. So besides matters of taste, I think there may be capitalistic reasons for music disappearing over time. What say ye?

Same here... I discovered Dire Straits in 1990 when the band activity was already decreasing (I think they did only "on every streets" after), but it was such a blast... :goodjob: I am addicted for life

Cheers

The soundtrack from the movie "Conan the Barbarian", composed by the late Basil Poledouris. Regardless of what you think of the movie itself, many consider the music to be one of the best examples of the art of scoring for a movie.

It's really great if "Riders of Doom" or "Battle of the Mounds" come up when I'm waging war. I have to laugh if "Wheel of Pain" starts playing when I'm micromanaging workers.

Appropriately enough, one of the tracks is titled "Theology - Civilization".

Great stuff all around.

I don't know enough about the mechanics of the music industry to really address your point. Maybe you're right to a certain extent but in the end I think great music will surpass obstacles like that survive into the future, regardless of genre. Bad music won't.

Iron maiden. sonata atica and new model army. I need to cut down on music in that folderThere is way too much in mine.
