So You Get To Pick a City to Live For 1 Year (under 100k) In Mainland Africa. Where?

Why would anyone want to live in 100K town which isn't even touristy nor very affluent? ^^
A smaller town isn't available? I think we've had this sort of discussion before and agreed that it's highly unlikely we'll become neighbours in this life.

I don't know enough about small cities in Africa to make a choice, yet, but the premise is interesting.

Yes, it is a hypothetical thread with an interesting premise.

It's just imo too confined. If I was to live in a small town, at least it should have some other thing going for it ^^ Eg if it was in a very peaceful and prosperous part of a rich country.

Sibi (Mali) gets my vote.

Spoiler there is water :

Location. Eg beaches, near mountains, lakes, forests etc.

I saw thus question elsewhere so......

I don't care about big cities myself so around 100-400k is perfect.

I would go smaller of I had to eg 13k.

Making the future off 100k non resort peace just cuts out mist if the obvious places. Capitals snd similar places.

What is a holiday resort? I really liked Essaouira, loads of people go there for holiday but it is a proper city as well, just under the threshold at 78k people. Beaches all around, lots of history, fishing port, relatively low cost of living. I could live there.

It should qualify. ^^^^

Great pick looks interesting. Keep em coming;).

Most cities have some amount of tourism so this is fine.
Morocco would be great to visit as well.

Hmm... when I wind up in cities of under 100,000 people on my own continent, it's not usually because of the city, but because I wanted to go there for something in the city or area.

Somewhere near the Atlas Mountains in Morocco could qualify. And I have a Moroccan friend who could make some recommendations.

One of my mates is engaged to a girl who lived in South Africa for two years, and while IIRC it was one of the larger cities (Pretoria?), she loved it there and may be able to recommend a smaller town, and almost certainly things to do.

I have a good friend from Tanzania, who could likely recommend a good location.

And I suppose that would be my approach: Talk with people I know who are from or have lived in Africa, collect their ideas, and choose one. Not a whole lot different than if you asked the same question about France, except that I know more people who have lived in Africa for an extended period of time than in France.

I'm curious about the exclusion of non-mainland Africa. Too good of weather in Madagascar? Or the islands in the Indian Ocean?

To easy. I'm going to live on a tropical island.

I would feel more adventurous if you gave us a transporter device that would allow us hypochondriacs and other broken spirits the ability to opt out of some of the experience.

Sure, giraffes are neat, but I’m not going to have a breakdown just to see one.

Here’s another cheat code city: one of those Spanish ones that’s on the African mainland. They’re all under 100,000.

Take that, hypothetical travel situation!

I wouldn't really consider Ceuta and Melilla to be cheat code cities. They have their downsides, notably the border security you'll have to go through to travel. I'd rather stay somewhere in Morocco where I wouldn't have to deal with that. Though if I were spending a year in Morocco, I might spend a weekend in one of those cities so I could say I've been to Spain.

Yeah, no.
I already find it's too warm here up in the low mountains in Western Europe, no way I'm going to live in a place that is mostly under the tropics.

If it wasn't limited to mainland Africa, I'd consider Cape Verde. It's a former Portuguese colony off the West African coast, so it would probably have a much more agreeable climate than anywhere else in Africa.

I'm aware. I suspect a lot of people would have picked islands.

I stole the thread title off some one else;).
