Hello all!

New to the forums, but you all seem to know your stuff. I know the basics of Civ and I grasp a lot of the concepts, but I still lack pizazz. Now, Ghandi in particular speaks to me as a character because I'm more comfortable in small Civs. So here are some questions I've been having:

  • Should Ghandi start with Tradition or Liberty and why?
  • Culture victory, right? RIGHT?! Or maybe Science...
  • Any general tips?

Thank you all very much. I hope to contribute some of my own "wisdom" in the future.

Hi! I'm also new, but let me share what I know.

One thing about Gandhi is while you indeed want to start tall, you could eventually (middle-to-late game) go both tall and wide because his UA means after a certain population (I think it's 6 population on standard size map), cities cost much less in happiness than they would with other Civs (Gandhi could eventually support 10 cities with 10 population each and come out with more happiness than other Civs with the same size with no other bonus). It's up to you to use all that happiness for more Golden Ages or more Puppets (yes, Gandhi is very viable for a domination victory).

You want to go tall because of the inherent happiness bonus, so most likely, go Tradition. Since you can field more growth without unhappiness, you can go Science because of the inevitable high pop.

gandhi is a good choice for culture victory but it's boring and you won't want to culture win again once you've done it. I prefer tradition but thats for 4 cities or less mostly. you will want the hanging gardens wonder, it's kind of a must have for gandhi so make sure you're working toward it.

  • Tradition is most likley your best bet as it aids in growing large populations
  • You could go for either culture or science because science is directly linked to population which with India you want to have alot of but thanks to the UA you should have more excess happiness which means more culture from the mandate of heavan policy
  • Go nukes if you wish to play as the 'true' Ghandi.

Hi MarcianTobay, welcome.

Just finished my first game with Gandhi yesterday. Some things I learned:

1) Tradition or Liberty? If you intend to keep tall (3-4 cities), Tradition. If going for both tall and wide (3-4 really big cities and a lot of small cities), Liberty seems more appropriate. You can always mix if that suits your strategy.

2) I think Gandhi is powerful enough to be good for any Victory you may choose. But going for Domination may force you to build more than 3-4 cities. That is fine if you don't overgrow them.

3) Build farms in tall cities, lots of farms. Get your gold elsewhere. Hanging Gardens is very nice. Small military is advised for staying tall, otherwise you will run into money problems.

Welcome

If you go to the Civilization Fanatics Civ V Strategy forums, then go to the Civ V WAR ACADEMY sub-forum you will find a whole bunch of well written artiles by community members about Civ V.

IIRC One of them is a strategy guide for INDIA.

Hope this helps. Post back if you cannot find the War Academy and need assistance.

Happy Civing

BTW I have a good Ghandi tip for you if you are playing against him.

Hide the uranium :)

If you do not follow, you will in time :)

Once you get a couple of Elephants and a handful of other units, you are pretty much invasion proof in the early game. So just grow, baby. Try to settle river cities and tech up to Civil Service and Education.

From there, it's a matter of geography and your chosen victory condition.
