Layoffs have struck the popular editorial outlet IGN, and it sounds as though subsidiary gaming sites 1UP, UGO and GameSpy are all being shut down.

(For some weird reason, thhis Ziff Davis seems awfually concerend about some "AskMen" thing)

I've already contacted the ArchiveTeam about this. If Geocities was preserved, why not these sites, which have much content? I believe it's even been linked to from here.

Come on. I know it's fun to take jabs at me, but this isn't the kind of thing I was obsessing over. At least make fun of me for what I was actually freaking over instead of the shuttering of a few gaming sites I never read anyhow.

You can go "Oh God here comes AlpsStranger!" if they cancel GTA5 or something, okay?

EDIT: 1up and GameSpy? Seriously? I think this forum is more relevant by itself than both of them put together.

The others could have gone "GeoCities? Seriously? I think [whatever other site] is more relevant by itself than the entirety of it put together."

And yet it was saved.

Some of you seem apathetic.

Seriously, suppose it was CFC. There'd be some people who aren't big fans of CFC just saying "let it die, it's not relevant" etc...

Eh, I'm off to go do stuff after I post the results in the video compression thread in computer talk. I'll be back later.

I'm apathetic because, like most gaming journalism and "gamer culture" sites, they were garbage.

That in mind, hopefully Kotaku follows suit.

Actually, on GameSpy, theres quite a few game mods that haven't been relocated over to IGN or anything

Ok, now I'm going.

I'd be sad if Penny Arcade or the Escapist went south, but these sites I can live without.

I clicked on this out of mild interest in the topic, but right quick watching you get dog-whistled became more interesting than reading the thread itself. It got meta tout suite.

Just sayin', did you ever respond... like you were apparently expected to respond. Fascinating. Much more fascinating than the thread subject, IMO.

They're stealthily being gobbled up by Steam.

I dont even know why the hell I bothered posting this. Its not like anyone cares.

I used to use gamespy. It was great when it had people on it but they all left a long long time ago

Isn't Civ IV Multiplayer hosted by Gamespy?

That's what I was thinking. And I think Civ3 multiplayer uses GameSpy as well, though it's not very populous these days.

So I do care a little bit about that one. I've never visited the site itself, but it'd be kinda bad if a whole bunch of games' multiplayer suddenly disappeared. And people here might notice if Civ4's went away.
