Some questions I have about game mechanics.

I'm new to the whole turn-based Civ genre and so there are a few questions that have been bugging me for awhile now.

1) To tap into a resource, does it only have to be within your borders with a 'mine' on it and a connection to a city?

2) Do you have to have the spot 'circled' in a city manager to benefit from it?

3) Does the bonus of +1 happy for say gems apply to all cities or just one? Does it require 'circling' to get the +1 happy bonus?

4) Are there any advantages to having multiples of same resource being harvested? If so, do the bonuses stack to +2 happy for two gem spots being harvested?

5) When you trade a resource to another Civ, does that affect your own access to said resource in any way?

6) The Grocer building grants +1 health for certain things. Does this only apply if the bananas resource is near that specific city or do all cities with Grocer benefit from your Civ having bananas somewhere?

7) The Granary is said to store 50% of food after growth. Exactly what does this mean?

8) The Coliseum grants +1 happy per 20% Culture rate. Could someone please give an example of what this means?

9) If you create a city somewhere and later decide you want to destroy it, are there any penalties for doing so? Example being I made one on an island but the distance penalty is too much to justify the gain there.

That is all for now. :) I want to offer my advanced thanks for any info here.

1) Resources are available to cities they're connected to (via road, river, or coast). They must be "mined", yes.

2) You get the resource no matter if you work the square (circle it) or not.

3) All cities connected get the bonus.

4) You can trade away the extras, but they provide you no extra bonus.

5) Yes, you can trade away your only iron, for example, and not have it anymore. Be careful.

6) Bananas must be connected (you can check in the city view to see what resources are connected).

7) It improves city growth (less food needed to grow)

8) You can adjust your culture spending (it appears below your science spending after you research a certain tech, Music or Drama I think)

9) You can't destroy cities anymore. You can, however, give them away.

Other points:

although you do not need to work a square to get the benefits of the resource, the resource does provide alot of extra food, hammers, and/or commerce to that square IF it is worked. There's a small initial bonus, then when you mine (or farm, etc) the square the bonus jumps up. This is in addition to the happy/healthy/strategic effects.

Bonus applies to ALL cities in which the resource "appears." The resource appears in the city to which it is connected (by a trade network), and any other city connected to that city. 1 resource can appear in an infinite number of cities, as long as they're connected by a trade network.

You can only get the bonus once, no matter how many of the resource you have. Extra resources are good for trade or as backup if a rival civ kicks you off the tile.

NOTE: this confused me because sometimes I saw +2 next to a resource of which I had 2, so I thought they stacked. Then I noticed a +2 next to a resource I only had 1 of! Turns out the granary gives you an extra +1 for a total of +2 from corn, rice, or wheat. Other improvements have similar effects.

To answer your question, the benefits of a say a grocery apply to the city in which it is built if the resource in question appears in that city as per above.

The majority of the time, every resource you have access to will apear in all your cities. With rivers, coasts, and roads it's pretty easy to keep them all linked up.

Granary: without it, your 'food bar" will go back to zero after filling up and giving you another pop poinht. With granary, it does not go to zero but rather keeps half the food that was in it, giving you a head start on the next pop point.
