some tech-tree speculations

I've compared the two screenshots with the tech-symbols at the top. (the "perfumed-warrior"-sc and the "techandhinduism"-sc)

"techandhinduism"-sc is earlier in the game than the other one.
the techs are: meditation, polytheism, fishing, agriculture, hunting, mining and masonry

"perfumed-warrior"-sc is 2760 BC (I don't know how many turns this could be??)
the techs here are: polytheism, fishing, agriculture, masonry, monotheism, wheel, writing, archery, "weapons"(maybe iron working) and horse-back riding

3 techs are researched: meditation, hunting and mining
new techs are available: monotheism, writing, wheel, "weapons", archery and horseback riding

So, if fireaxis did no changings in the tech tree, my proposal is that:

mining -> wheel, "weapons"
hunting -> archery, horseback riding
meditation -> writing, monotheism(!)

But if meditation also leads to monotheism like polytheism that means the tech tree works different from civ3:

civ3: tech1 and tech2 -> tech3
civ4: tech1 or(!) tech2 -> tech3

So if this is correct, e.g. we only have to research drama on the way to music not literature too.

By the way I took a close look on the "landbridge"-sc. In the tech-icons for code of laws and theology are symbols for religions.
(I think it is code of laws for islam and theology for christianity)

What do you think about it? Are You seeing same things like me :crazyeye:

aaah...that's what I mean. thx slax, I didn't see it before.

But I didn't agree completely with apolyton:
"So for example Engineering might require either Construction or something yet unknown advance."

I think engeneering requires booth, construction (the tech leads to engeneering) and the additional tech. Otherwise it would be possible to research literature as soon as you discover polytheism. Too big jump in my eyes.

I'm guessing the graphics weren't finished at that time.

This "tech 1 OR tech 2 leads to tech 3" method was speculated in Apolyton's Civ 4 summary.
This means, theorically, you can be engaged in nuclear war while you can't use archers. ???. Probably I'm wrong.

I have to say that and/or prerequisites for techs would prove to be a great addition, most particularly for religious and social technology. This is because, historically, civs often came to the same knowledge, but via very different pathways-and this has been pretty well impossible to represent in previous versions of civ!

Could be a work-in-progress. Remember that they made changes to the tech tree in C3C v1.22f! I'd expect the tech tree to be something that will still be tweaked and balanced along with the rest of the game throughout the development cycle.

ainwood, you are right, the next month are balancing time and things could change. I would use this engeneering-example only to illustrate what I mean and the difference to the apollyton-version.
If these additional-tech were or-possibilities this could lead to the nuclear-weapons-without-archers-case, that masterguy means. So therefore I think the add-techs are required to prevent those situations.

Nevertheless I think the main structure of the tech-tree is quite fix, so I agree with aussie_lurker. If this "and/or-thing" is true, it seems a very interesting addition/chance for civ4 for me, more fun, more possibilities, more difference.
On the other hand it could mean that it is easier to build some wonders, because less civs have researched the technology and so are in competition with you...

Somehow I think I've seen the concept with these required tech ("and") from another game, but I can't remember which one or if I true. How was it in CTP or in Galactic Civ?
